Suggested December 2023 A Solution For Macbook Pro Booting To A Black Screen

Rarely, a Mac may encounter some peculiar issue during system boot that can cause quite a bit of panic, like booting to a completely black screen. It would be easy to interpret that as a potential hardware problem, and in some particularly rare situations that may be the case, but it’s more often a software issue that can be resolved with some simple troubleshooting steps.

Case in point; one of our readers experience with his MacBook Pro, which out of the blue rebooted to a completely dark screen. Though it’s rare, we figured this would be a good opportunity to share three potential solutions to this problem, and similar issues, should you encounter a dark screen on system start.

First, Reset the System Management Controller to Fix the Black Display on Boot

The first thing you’ll want to do resolve nearly every power related issue on a Mac is to reset the SMC, or System Management Controller. This will dump and reset settings for anything power management related, and is long known to resolve problems with things like fans, heat, sleeping problems, and of course, display issues.

On any modern MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with a built-in battery, which is just a bout all of them nowadays, this is how you do that:

Shut down the Mac and connect it to your MagSafe adapter and a wall outlet as usual

Hold down the Shift+Control+Option+Power button at the same time for a few seconds

Release all keys at the same time, then boot the Mac as usual

Older Macs can find directions here for the same process on their machines, it’s slightly different if you can take out the battery.

When the Mac boots, hopefully the black screen has gone away and you’re back to normal, but if it doesn’t… reader Nathan D. wrote in with the next tip.

Second, Try a Keypress Sequence to Ditch the Black Screen

Press the Power / OFF button once – this will bring up the dialog box which you can’t see

Press the “S” button – this is the shortcut to sleep the Mac

Hold down the Power button until a hard shut down is forced

Wait about 15 seconds, then hit the Power button again to turn it back on

Try a PRAM Reset to Resolve the Black Boot Display

Reboot the Mac and as soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys together

When you hear the boot sound again, the PRAM has been reset so let the Mac boot again as usual

At this point your Mac should boot again as usual and no longer have the black display, loading Mac OS or Mac OS X as usual.

Finally; Enter Password, Hit Return

When the Mac boots into the black screen, enter the password you’d use to login to the Mac as usual

Hit the Return key

If this works, you’ll know rather quickly because the black screen will give way to the regular Mac OS desktop.

Turn Off Automatic Graphics Switching (for black screens on dual-GPU MacBook Pro only)

Some MacBook Pro models have dual graphics cards that switch automatically. For whatever reason those models can sometimes boot directly to a black screen. Often this can be remedied by simply disabling automatic graphics card (GPU) switching on MacBook Pro as instructed here:

From the  Apple menu choose “System Preferences” then go to “Energy Saver”

Toggle the switch next to ‘Automatic Graphics Switching’ to turn that off

Restart the Mac as usual

How To Customize Ios Home Screen Like A Pro For Free

Ever since iOS 14 was rolled out, I have seen and tried all sorts of hacks to customize the iPhone home screen. I have loved giving my home screen a custom look using a variety of tools. And I guess most of you would be pretty much in the same ballpark given how big a trend “iOS 14 home screen customization” has been in recent time. Though there is no dearth of paid tools, how do you customize the iOS home screen like a pro for free? Well, so long as you are willing to get a bit creative, there are quite a few cool hacks that can let you deck up your iPhone home screen to your heart’s liking.

Customize iPhone Home Screen Like a Pro for Free

To me, there are three most crucial tools for designing a home screen – custom app icons, custom widgets, and a solid library of wallpapers. Once you have got these components under your radar, all you need to do is take your imagination for a long spin. Depending on a specific theme like dark, vibrant, and nature, you can set a suitable wallpaper, place app icons, and widgets in perfect tune with the layout. Now that you have got the idea, let’s bring it into practice!

Create Custom App Icons

Nothing looks as elegant on the home screen as custom app icons. So, if you wish to amplify the customization game, do not fail to craft custom app icons so that your iPhone home screen will look more personalized.

Just in case you are wondering how you would be able to craft app icons, let me tell you that the process is quite straightforward. All you have to do to get started is simply choose the desired icon, color, badge, or glyph as per the design theme, and then place the custom icons on the home screen using the Shortcuts app.

App Icon Changer (free, $9.99/month) and Launch Center Pro (free, offers in-app purchases) are the apps that I use to create custom iPhone app icons. They are both available for free and make the task of creating app icons quite simple.

I’m going to walk you through the quick steps using App Icon Change. So, download the app on your device and then open it. After that, tap on the Edit Icons tab.  Then, choose the Icon tab and select the desired icon. After that, tap on the Color and Background tabs to select the preferred color and background. Then, tap on the download button to save the app to your camera roll.

Once you have saved the app icon to the Photos app, launch the Shortcuts app, and then tap on the “+” button at the top right corner of the screen. Next, tap on Add Action. After that, search for Open App action and select the app you wish to launch. Up next, select the icon you have just created from the Photos app.

In the end, add the app icon to the home screen. Going forward, you can tap on this custom icon to launch the corresponding app. If you want to follow the step-by-step instruction, follow our detailed guide about creating and using custom app icons.

Apart from these apps, icons8 and Flaticon are two of my favorite platforms that offer plenty of app icons. So, take these apps and websites for a long test to make a ton of custom app icons.

Make Eye-Catching Custom Home Screen Widgets

When it comes to iPhone home screen customization, custom widgets have a major role to play. And guess what, App Store has got a boatload of apps that can let you create amazing home screen widgets. Whether it’s an ever-running clock widget or cool weather widget or the useful utility widget showing memory and total storage, you can make all sorts of widgets that can let you deck up the iPhone home screen to your heart’s content.

Next, choose Widgetsmith. Then, select the preferred size and add it to the home screen.

Create Transparent Widgets

Whenever I am out to personalize the iPhone home screen, I wish to have the desired freedom to place icons. Though iOS doesn’t offer the flexibility to leave blank space like Android, there are a few third-party apps that fill up the void. Thus, you can create transparent widgets on your iPhone and place them at the spot which you want to be blank. After that, you can place app icons at the desired spot. Take a glance at the screenshot below!

Notably, the process of creating invisible widgets for iPhone is almost the same as the normal widgets. The only thing that you have to keep in mind is to make sure the transparent widgets match the wallpaper so that they can easily deceive the eyes.

The apps that I would recommend you to create transparent home screen widgets are – Yidget (free) and TWid (free). They are simple to use and work as expected.

I’m going to show you the quick steps using Yidget. First off, capture the screenshot of the empty screen of your iPhone home screen. Next, open Yidget app and then tap on the Create option. After that, select the screenshot and fine-tune it using the given tools.

Make the Most of Stunning Wallpapers

Wallpapers form the crux of attractive home screen designs. So, be sure you have the luxury to choose from a wide assortment of backgrounds as they can play a vital role in letting you design your iPhone home screen with different themes.

Whether you want your home screen to look funky or go retro or showcase a glitz appearance, there are quite a few top-notch wallpaper apps that are available for free. The ones that always give me nice-looking wallpapers without having to break the bank are – Black Lite (free) and WallPick (free).

Boasting a huge library of professionally-designed backgrounds and themes, these wallpaper apps ensure you always have something new to try out. On the other hand, if you are into dynamic wallpapers, check out our article on the best live wallpaper apps for iPhone.

What if you don’t want to install wallpaper apps on your device or just wish to have more beautiful wallpapers, I would recommend you to check out a couple of well-known websites that offer a ton of iPhone wallpapers: Unsplash and Wallpaper Safari.

While Unsplash features a wide range of natural and abstract wallpapers, Wallpaper Safari has come up with some iconic wallpapers that should resonate with your fan-boy image.

Automatically Change iPhone Wallpaper with Just a Tap

No matter how nice-looking a theme is, it tends to look dull or pale after a while. That’s why a well-timed change is inevitable to keep the charming look and feel intact. Turns out, there is a shortcut that can let you automatically change your iPhone wallpaper with just a tap.

The workaround works with a shortcut called “Wallpaper” Thus, you will need to first set it up using your selected wallpapers. To get going, create an album of all of your favorite wallpapers and then add the wallpaper shortcut to your shortcut library.

And then, allow the wallpaper app to use your custom photo album using the Shortcut app.

Keep a Track of Cool Home Screen Design Ideas

Once you have got custom app icons, widgets, and matching wallpapers, creating beautiful themes is not a big deal. Depending on different themes like dark, winter, love, and funky, you can design the home screen by placing the icons in line with a specific layout.

Bear in mind that there is no thumb rule for creating a top-notch theme. So, never fail to experiment and improvise. From what I can tell after creating plenty of iOS 14 home screen themes, it pays to tweak every subtle thing that you think can play a vital role in adorning the home screen.

A Couple of Neat Ways to Keep the Clutter Away from the Home Screen

A cluttered home screen never looks pleasing to the eyes. Thus, be sure to keep it clean so that it will never look burdened with too many unnecessary apps. iOS 14 offers a couple of better ways to keep the home screen clutter-free.

Hide Unwanted Home Screen Pages: If you want to have better control over the home screen, keep as few home screen pages as possible. Unlike before, you can hide unnecessary home screen pages so that they can remain out of sight.

Pro Tips to Customize iPhone Home Screen

So, that’s how you can give a custom look and feel to your iPhone home screen. With so many cool ideas, I guess customizing the home screen will now become a pleasant experience for you. And that too without having to break your bank.

By the way, which one of these tips have you found more exciting? Be sure to shoot your feedback. Also, spill some beans about any such cool tips that you think are worth mentioning in this guide.

How Do I Connect Macbook Pro/Air To A Tv?

If you have a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with only USB-C ports, you may be wondering how to connect the MacBook to a TV.

Maybe you want to use the TV as a larger display, or perhaps you want to watch a movie from the computer on the bigger TV screen, or use it for gaming.

Whatever the reason, it’s easy to do, but you will need to have the appropriate cables.

To be clear, we’re talking about MacBook Pro models that are 2023 and newer (including the 2023 and 2023 M1 MacBook Pro), and MacBook Air models from 2023 and newer (also including the M1 MacBook Air). The USB-C ports look like this:

Assuming your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air has USB-C ports, you’re good to go.

What do I need to connect my MacBook Pro or MacBook Air to a TV?

Most modern flat screen TV’s will need an HDMI cable, and for the Mac, you’ll need a USB-C to HDMI adapter along with the HDMI cable, or a USB-C to HDMI cable.

Let’s check out some of the options.

Anker USB-C to HDMI adapter for $17 only has a single HDMI port, but if that’s all you need it’s good enough. Remember, you will still need an HDMI cable.

Apple USB-C Digital Multiport Adapter for $70 has HDMI, USB 3, and a USB-C port, which gives you a lot more options for other peripherals. Again, you will still need an HDMI cable.

HDMI braided cable for $20 carries both video and audio signal, and supports higher resolution video output which matters if you want to watch something like 4K video. You will need a USB-C adapter to be able to connect this from the Mac to the TV.

Connecting the MacBook to a TV

Once you have the proper cables, all you need to do is connect the the appropriate cable to the Mac, and then to the HDMI port on the TV.

For what it’s worth, there are plenty of other cable options available on Amazon but these are a few with good ratings and from reputable companies, like Anker and Apple.

Of course the aforementioned solutions are a wired solution, meaning there will be a cable stretching from the Mac to the TV. If you’re looking for a wireless solution, a good option for Macs is to use AirPlay.

How do you connect a Mac to a TV wirelessly?

If you want to go wireless, you can use AirPlay.

AirPlay is available if the TV either supports AirPlay natively like some modern LG TV’s, or if you have an Apple TV box connected to the TV, which you can AirPlay to that.

There are other options too, for example the Chromecast allows you to wirelessly transmit the Chrome browser to a TV, but it does not have the full features available as something like AirPlay. Whether or not that’s preferable to using something like USB-C and HDMI cables it up to you.

This is obviously aimed at modern Macs with USB-C ports. If you have an older MacBook Pro or MacBook Air that you want to connect to a TV, and the Mac has an HDMI port, you can simply connect an HDMI cable from the Mac to the TV. But for modern Macs, you’ll need an adapter for USB-C, as well as the HDMI cable.

14 Ways To Solve A Black Screen On Your Dell Laptop

You may experience a black screen on your Dell Laptop before or after the Windows boots. Whether there’s a Dell logo at startup or the display goes entirely black, this article should help you fix any of such problems.

While you could encounter different cases, the major causes include problematic device drivers, faulty components, and corrupted Windows installation/update. Also, this can happen due to overheated GPU/CPU, improperly seated RAM sticks, and incorrect BIOS configuration.

No matter the cause, simply removing the external peripherals and rebooting the system can sometimes fix it. You may also try restarting the graphics driver using Ctrl + Shift + Windows + B keys. If there’s a sudden black screen after the laptop overheats, we recommend trying out different methods to cool it down.

In some Dell laptops, the black screen is accompanied by LED blinking in some patterns. If the general fixes didn’t help, it’s a good idea to identify the blink code and move forward with the recommended solution. In most cases, this indicates a hardware failure, and you may need to reseat or replace the components.

The table below consists of the blink codes, along with the problematic component, and possible solutions. While noting the Dell LED light pattern, identify the long blinks as X and shorter ones as x. For example, if the LED blinks twice, followed by just one short flash, the code will be X.x, i.e. 2.1.

If there’s a solid or continuously blinking orange light, it could indicate a battery failure. In such cases, plug in the AC adapter and try running the Dell laptop without a battery. If there’s no black screen, know that your device requires a new battery.

In some cases, Windows boots normally but there’s a sudden black screen with a mouse pointer. This happens when Windows Explorer, responsible for providing GUI, goes missing. Here’s a quick workaround to bring back this process and fix the black screen on your Dell laptop:

Power or force resetting the laptop can fix any issues within the display or operating system. Basically, it clears the memory and wakes up the laptop from an unresponsive state:

Next, remove the external battery from your Dell laptop (if available).

Then, press and hold the power button again for about 10 seconds to discharge any residual charge on the capacitor.

Now, reinsert the external battery while keeping the external peripherals unplugged.

Replug the AC adapter.

Press the power button to start your Dell laptop. If this solves your problem, you may proceed to connect the external peripherals.

Use the power button to force shut down the Dell laptop and press it again to start.

Wait for the laptop to restart and check if the black screen problem is now resolved.

If you can’t access BIOS due to image corruption, you may proceed with the automatic BIOS recovery. However, you need to ensure that the feature was enabled in the first place. If yes, follow the below steps to perform auto-recovery on your Dell laptop:

First, hold the power button until the system shuts off.

Also, disconnect the AC adapter.

After several seconds, the BIOS recovery screen should appear. You may then stop pressing the keys.

Find Reset NVRAM and disable the feature.

Then, choose Recover BIOS and hit Enter.

Use an external monitor to identify issues with your Dell laptop

If the aforementioned fixes didn’t help, we recommend identifying issues using an external display. Connect any compatible monitor to your Dell laptop and see if this projects or extends your laptop screen.

If it does, know that there are issues with the laptop’s internal components. But if the external monitor also shows no signal, it’s probably due to a corrupted OS or driver.

Once you’ve identified issues using the external display, we suggest booting your Dell laptop in safe mode. If you’re able to enter this mode, know that the black screen issues definitely lie with Windows, and some troubleshooting tricks can help you fix it. Below is a simple guide on how to enter safe mode in Windows 11:

Press and hold power button for approximately 5 seconds to shut down the laptop.

Start the system again and repeat the process until the Automatic Repair pops up.

Once you’re in safe mode or you’re using an external monitor, we suggest updating the graphics card and monitor drivers. Since these device drivers facilitate the communication between your OS and the monitor/graphics driver, any issues here may lead to a black screen.

You may even notice a yellow exclamation sign if they are corrupted. Kindly go through the below steps to update or reinstall these drivers:

If the best drivers are already installed, navigate back to Device Manager.

Restart your laptop in normal mode and see if this fixes the issue.

Did a recent driver update cause a black screen on your Dell laptop? In that case, you might want to roll them back, and here’s how:

Connect to the external monitor or boot into safe mode again.

Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters or Monitors.

In the new window, select a reason you’re trying to roll back the driver.

Hit the Yes button and restart your Dell laptop in normal mode.

A failing RAM could also be responsible for the black screen on your Dell laptop. But before making any physical changes, we recommend running the Windows Memory Diagnostics while you’re in safe mode:

Once the memory test is complete, the Dell laptop should restart automatically. The results in the Status field will be displayed again once you log into Windows.

If Windows doesn’t boot and there’s a continuous beep sound, it’s possible that your Dell laptop isn’t detecting the memory module. While reseating the RAM stick and cleaning the slot can sometimes fix this issue, you may have to replace the component in the worst case.

First, force shut down laptop, and place it on a flat table.

Get to its bottom part and remove the external battery (if available).

Repeat the process if your Dell laptop has additional memory modules.

While you’re at it, we also suggest getting microfiber cloth and clean RAM sticks.

After this, ensure that all the other connections are also secured. You may even reinsert the HDD or SSD.

Finally, reassemble and reconnect everything before starting your Dell laptop. This time, Windows should boot without a black screen.

Your laptop’s display stops working if the LCD cable connection is loose or damaged. So, if the system is running but the screen is black, you may try reconnecting the cable to see if this helps:

Get to the laptop’s bottom section and remove the external battery.

Ground yourself before touching anything. Kindly unplug the connection if the Dell laptop has an internal battery.

Then, locate the display cable. This varies based on the Dell model. So, we recommend checking the user manual to identify its exact location.

Plug in the internal battery cable and close the casing. For laptops with an external battery, kindly reinsert it.

Start your device and see if the black screen persists.

Some Windows users claim that their laptop screen went black after a recent Windows update. If that’s the case, kindly uninstall the latest version from safe mode to see if this solves the problem:

Wait until the update is uninstalled and once it’s completed, reboot your Dell laptop.

If deleting the update didn’t help, you can try reverting the system to the state that never experienced a black screen. Here’s a quick guide on how to perform System Restore from the Windows Recovery Environment:

Any issues with the Windows recovery image can also cause a black screen. In such cases, we suggest resetting your PC:

In the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot.

If this didn’t help, you’ll need to clean install Windows. To do so, create an installation media first. Then, boot using this and set up the OS from scratch:

If none of the fixes work out, it’s probably due to damaged hardware components. You may require replacing the display panel, LCD cable, power inverter, RAM, graphics card, laptop battery, CMOS battery, or the system board itself.

While you can repair or replace the components yourself, this could still be risky. Therefore, we suggest checking the warranty before contacting the nearest Dell service center.

Huawei’s Matebook X Pro Laptop Is Much More Than A Macbook Pro Clone

Huawei Matebook Pro X

A fantastic screen and excellent performance make this one stand out.

Any review of the Huawei Matebook X Pro has to start off with a comparison to Apple’s MacBook Pro. The two machines share features every step of the way, from the sparse packaging to the computer’s aluminum body and short-travel keyboard. You could almost call the Matebook X a knockoff—if it wasn’t so excellent.

What is it?

Huawei’s flagship laptop is designed to compete with other ultra-thin computers on the market. It’s just over a half-inch thick when closed, which makes it about the same size as other slim machines like the HP Spectre 13 and the Dell XPS 13.

Huawei packed the Matebook’s aluminum chassis with high-end guts, like a 1.8 GHz Core i7 processor and 16 GB RAM, as well as an Nvidia GeForce MX150 card to handle graphics processing. It’s fast, but it’s not meant to compete with super-powerful gaming laptops like the Razer Blade. The Matebook is meant to handle everyday tasks, as well as more power hungry jobs like photo editing, and even light video work.

The 13-inch touchscreen screen is one of this machine’s biggest draws. It follows the trend of trying to completely kill bezels, filling more than 90-percent of the display area with actual screen image. It also uses an unusual—at least in 2023—aspect ratio of 3:2 instead of the wider 16:9 displays to which many laptop users have grown accustomed. I actually prefer the slightly taller screen because it matches the aspect ratio of the 3:2 photos that come out of my DSLR cameras. It also makes editing documents and articles in a content management system simpler because you get more vertical screen space.

The screen itself is rather glossy, which means you’ll fight some reflections in some locations, but none more than the usual. Its 3,000 x 2,000 pixel resolution is just shy of 4K, but by an insignificant amount, and it produces surprisingly accurate colors right out of the box.

From a design standpoint, the Matebook X Pro is also impressive. It weighs just under 3 pounds, which makes is slightly heavier than some of the other ultra-slim laptops, which typically check in around 2.5 pounds. It is, however, a few fractions of an ounce lighter than a comparable MacBook Pro.

The keyboard feels very much like typing on a current model MacBook Pro, and it depends on your outlook about whether that’s a positive or a negative. The keys have a short travel distance and produce a pronounced “clack” sound when you push one. The Huawei keys seem a little quieter than the MacBook Pro’s, though. I personally enjoy the sensation of typing on this machine.

The circular power button below the screen on the right acts as a fingerprint reader which worked perfectly every time I tried it when logging in. It is good placement, but the lack of a traditionally placed webcam (more on that in a moment) takes logging in with the facial recognition component of Window’s Hello feature impractical.

There are plenty of hard numbers out there if you want to see exactly how fast this machine handles arbitrary tasks, but I always default to my typical torture test of a long photo editing session in Adobe Lightroom, a program that’s notorious for soaking up lots of resources and running sluggishly, even on super-fast machines.

While the Matebook X Pro didn’t handle rending full-size raw photo files quite as quickly as the current 15-inch MacBook Pro, the difference was remarkably small. We’re talking fractions of a second. It handled opening 100-megabyte raw files in Photoshop without choking, and chewed through some light HD video editing as a speed that’s very respectable for a machine of this size.

The battery life promises 11-hours of runtime, and while I didn’t time it with a stopwatch, I did get a full workday of typing, editing, light photo editing, and general internet foolishness in without the need for a charge.

Huawei MateBook X Pro webcam

This was not my experience with the webcam placement.

The right side of the computer has a single USB 3.0 port, while there is a pair of USB-C inputs on the other side, one of which I typically used to charge the battery. It’s a typical collection of ports, but in 2023, it’s worth celebrating when ultra-slim laptop makers don’t take away as many inputs as possible and send us into dongle hell.

That stupid webcam

By almost all accounts, the design on the Matebook X Pro is excellent—with the exception of its webcam. To save space on the display and avoid the need for making a notch in the screen, Huawei put this laptop’s webcam inside of a spring-loaded key in the keyboard. Pressing it is actually rather novel and feels surprisingly sturdy. The problem, however is that the webcam then sees you from a very unflattering upward angle that makes you look like something out of a horror movie.

Ultimately, the hidden webcam is like a cat in a top hat—cute, but ultimately pretty useless.

Should you buy it?

At $1,500 (as reviewed here, starting price is $1,100), this laptop sits in a fat part of the ultra-slim laptop market that’s chock full of competition. After a week of steady usage, however, it’s hard to find a reason not to recommend it. The battery life is long, the screen is beautiful, and the performance was even better than I expected.
