Suggested March 2024 Apple Releases Major Ios 11 Software Update For Iphone And Ipad

Apple on Tuesday released the free iOS 11 software update for the supported iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models following an extensive period of testing that began with the initial developer-only release on June 5.

Moving from GM to public release

The iOS 11 public release has the same build number (15A372) as the iOS 11 GM.

People who installed the iOS 11 GM on their iPhone and iPad needn’t do anything because they’ve been running literally the same code as folks who have just upgraded to the commercial iOS 11 release.

To continue receiving iOS 11 betas, keep Apple’s beta configuration profile on your device.

If you’d like to get the subsequent commercial builds when they’re released, delete the profile from your device and then update to the upcoming superseding version (iOS 11.x) when it becomes available.

How to update to iOS 11

The iOS 11 public release is available as an over-the-air update in Settings → General → Software Update on your device or through desktop iTunes. Apple also released a fourth major version of the Apple Watch operating system today, watchOS 4.

iOS 11 marks the most important update to Apple’s mobile operating system in years.

Not only does it bring augmented reality experiences, increase your security and turn your iPad into a productivity powerhouse with drag and drop, an interactive Dock and ARKit, but also makes your iPhone smarter and more powerful with Siri enhancements, a customizable Control Center a redesigned App Store and much more.

I’m jailbroken, should I update?

Be sure to follow our checklist to ensure a hassle-free experience.

If you’re jailbroken and intend to stay jailbroken, it’s probably a good idea to stay away from iOS 11 for the time being because upgrading to it will cost you your jailbreak.

Folks who are not jailbroken and don’t intend to jailbreak in the near future are welcome to upgrade. Keep in mind that iOS 11 does not support 32-bit devices like iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c.

Siri Receives Major Upgrades For Ios 6 And Is Officially Coming To Ipad

Siri has received a major update with iOS 6. She can now provide sport scores for the NBA, NFL, etc. She can also tell you batting averages for specified baseball players, and provide arbitrary information like the height differences between basketball players. And this is just the very tip of the iceberg. There’s also integration with Rotten Tomatoes to highlight movie reviews, and even watch trailers from within Siri.

Even better is the fact that the iPad is now officially receiving Siri support!

Siri on iPad

No more hacks, no more tweaks. Siri is now officially iPad bound! There’s still no word as to which iPad’s Siri will support, but hopefully the iPad 2 will receive support along with the new iPad.

Launching Apps

Apps can now be launched directly from Siri, very similar to what we saw from jailbreak tweaks like AssistantExtensions, and Siri Toggles.

With iOS 6, you can ask Siri to open apps for you. If you arrive early at the cafe Siri helped you find, just ask to play Angry Birds so you can kill time while you wait. Or ask Siri to launch Facebook and see what your friends are up to, or take a look at the latest posts on your Wall.

Movies

Siri now integrates directly with Rotten Tomatoes, allowing you to view movie ratings, trailers, and even search for specific stars via voice commands.

OpenTable

Ready to book a fancy dinner date? Now with Siri, you can.

With Siri you now have a personal restaurant concierge. Ask to find restaurants by cuisine, price, location, outdoor seating, or a combination of choices. Siri will show you a restaurant’s photos, Yelp stars, price range, and reviews. When you find a place you like, ask Siri to make a reservation through the OpenTable app.

Sports

You can now check sports scores for virtually any sports league directly from Siri. It features even deeper integrations for specific leagues like the NBA, NFL, and MLB. You can easily check batting averages, scores from last night’s game, and much, much more. If you can remember, there was a tweak called SiriSports that performed something similar, but this is a whole lot deeper.

Sports fan? Siri knows baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and hockey. Ask Siri for game schedules, scores from the current season’s games, or up-to-the minute scores from live games. Tell Siri to show you player stats and compare them against other players’ stats. Siri tracks team records, too, so you’ll always know how well your team is doing (or not doing). Siri is even smart enough to know whether you’re asking about the New York Giants or the San Francisco Giants, based on where you are.

Languages

Siri is becoming a lot more diverse with a boatload of new language support on tap in iOS 6. New languages include Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, Swiss French, and Swiss German, English and Canadian French support, and more.

Twitter & Facebook

Unsurprisingly, there’s now Twitter integration directly in iOS 6 via Siri. You can now send tweets and update your Facebook status directly via Siri.

Eyes Free

Along with the updates comes new a new Eyes Free features that allows Siri to integrate directly with vehicles from various manufactures such as GM, and BMW. This will allow you to invoke Siri using a button on the steering wheel, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road.

Apple is working with car manufacturers to integrate Siri into select voice control systems. Through the voice command button on your steering wheel, you’ll be able to ask Siri questions without taking your eyes off the road. To minimize distractions even more, your iOS device’s screen won’t light up. With the Eyes Free feature, ask Siri to call people, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, use Maps and get directions, read your notifications, find calendar information, add reminders, and more. It’s just another way Siri helps you get things done, even when you’re behind the wheel.

What do you think about the new Siri on iOS? Seems like a pretty major update to us! Of course we will have full video coverage of the new Siri as soon as iOS 6 is available for download.

7 Best Travel Accessories For Iphone, Ipad, Apple Watch, And Mac

Getting ready for vacation, business travel, or just want some ideas to improve charging, organizing, and using your Apple devices on the go? After hands-on testing, we’ve rounded up seven of the best travel accessories for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and Mac.

Whether you do lots of extended travel, short trips, or just take your Apple gear with you to and from work every day, these accessories offer lots of value and I’m confident they’re made to last after using all of them myself.

Best travel accessories for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac

After using this for several months, I’ve found the mophie 3-in-1 travel charger with official MagSafe support to be the quintessential Apple accessory for powering devices on the go.

Highlights include a premium fabric and highly portable design, full 15W MagSafe wireless charging for iPhone plus dedicated spots for Apple Watch and AirPods all powered by one USB-C cable (brick included too).

It comes with a neat travel case to keep everything perfectly organized and ready to go.

Check out all the details in my full review here. The mophie 3-in-1 travel charger retails for $149.95 but the company usually offers 20% off.

The wallet holds two to three cards, has a bi-fold flip design with an interior window for quickly showing your ID or tapping RFID cards, and comes in six colors.

The 180-degree adjustability means you can get your iPhone propped up at the perfect angle for reading or watching video and with MagSafe it works in both portrait and landscape.

It’s also not much thicker than Apple’s Leather MagSafe Wallet.

The Moft Flash Wallet & Stand is made from soft vegan leather and goes for just $34.99. Check out more details in my full review.

I’ve had this tech organizer for over three years and it’s held up super well. Along with the top-notch materials and build quality, Native Union’s Stow Organizer includes a mix of pockets, elastic straps, a waterproof zipper, and more.

Fine details include an Apple Pencil holder, an interior slim zippered pocket for small items, and an easy-to-access open exterior pocket.

In addition to everything I regularly pack, I can also fit a 27,000 mAh portable battery in this organizer when needed.

You can usually pick up the Native Union Stow Organizer for $59.99.

This is a clever iPhone accessory from mophie. Along with a 10,000 mAh battery and the MagSafe compatibility for iPhone 12 and 13 (or any smartphone with the included snap ring adapter) the snap+ powerstation stand has a built-in kickstand.

But mophie included one more handy feature, an integrated 1/4-20 standard tripod socket to easily use your iPhone and charge up in a variety of scenarios.

You can find the snap+ powerstation stand direct from mophie for $69.95.

Satechi’s GaN USB-C chargers are perfect for powering up iPhone, iPad, and MacBook – even all three simultaneously.

My go-to has become the 108W 3-port model that has plenty of power in a compact design for $75.

Satechi also has 165W and 200W multi-port versions priced at $119 and $149, as well as a single-port 100W model. Meanwhile, the 66W 3-port USB-C GaN Charger appears to have been discontinued.

Even though cloud storage has become the norm, it’s still useful to have a physical flash drive.

Going above and beyond normal flash drives, the SanDisk Luxe features both USB-C and Lightning in one device so it’s seamless to use between iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even PC.

You can pick up the 64GB SanDisk Luxe for around $35 with storage options going up to 256GB.

This JetDrive MacBook Pro flush SD card is a handy accessory, particularly if you want to travel as light as possible.

From the super convenient form factor to dust, water, and shock resistance, plus a generous 5-year warranty, it’s easy to recommend the JetDrive Lite 330 as long as you’re fine with the 75-95 MB/s speeds.

Half-size SD card fits perfectly flush in MacBook Pro

Capacities from 128GB to 1TB

Dust, water, and shock-resistant

95 MB/s write and 75 MB/s read speeds

5-year warranty

Price: Usually $25-$190 depending on capacity

Ios 11 Concept Imagines New Productivity Features For Ipad

In the meantime, Federico Viticci and Sam Beckett of MacStories have put together an incredibly detailed concept of iPad-specific features that could be part of iOS 11, including the Finder, a new Shelf feature, drag-and-drop available system-wide and other perks.

With the Shelf feature, you would be able to clip pretty much anything with a simple drag-and-drop gesture. Sitting above apps both in full-screen or Split View mode, it would reveal itself automatically when you’re dragging an item towards the top of the screen.

The Shelf would display your previously saved items as thumbnail previews and you’d be able to drop an item on top of another item to create a folder in the Shelf.

“The idea behind the Shelf is to make it as effortless as possible to hold something for later without the cognitive load of deciding which app or extension should receive it right away.”

The Shelf would be paginated and local to each iPad.

You’d be permitted to drop almost anything in it: from text selections and images to phone numbers and even songs. Tapping an item in the Shelf would pull up a custom Quick Look preview with additional information and actions relevant to the selected item.

And here’s the concept video.

Next up: file management.

As you know, Apple currently offers the iCloud Drive app for browsing your iCloud files.

MacStories has envisioned a Finder for iOS because the argument that iPad doesn’t need to expose its filesystem to the user “lost its validity when Apple introduced document providers in iOS 8 and the iCloud Drive app in iOS 9.”

“All the pieces of the current system—iCloud Drive, the document picker and document providers—should be unified into a single Finder app and system-wide layer available everywhere,” said MacStories.

Instead of having files stored within app-specific folders on iCloud Drive, users would be able to create files in a top-level iCloud Drive view.

As a bonus, rather than list a bunch of installed document provider extensions in a popup, you’d get a full-blown Finder dialog to open files from any folder or app.

MacStories notes:

With a new set of APIs and user permissions, iOS 11 could allow apps to more easily open each other’s documents in complex (but intuitive) workflows that aren’t possible today.

And, obviously, automation could play a role in this down the road, opening the door to ideas such as folder-monitoring utilities and file automation either via Workflow or Hazel-like apps.

Finder for iOS would integrate with other features that MacStories has envisioned, such as the Shelf and system-wide drag-and-drop, but without the complexity of macOS.

But wouldn’t drag-and-drop clash with iOS’s standard gestures?

In a word, no. As MacStories explains:

Because drag-and-drop would be fully multitouch-enabled, it wouldn’t block the iOS interface: another finger could be used to navigate in a different “drop area” of an app, or a user could keep dragging until the Split View app picker is shown and drop an item onto an app’s icon, opening a contextual action menu.

App Store could be redesigned around Apple Music-inspired redesign, as show below.

A better Split View implementation is one of my favorite concepts proposed by MacStories for iOS 11. In addition to supporting drag-and-drop between the apps in Split View mode, you’d gain the ability to quickly select an app for Split View by choosing it from a Home screen like view complete with Spotlight integration for surfacing Split View-enabled apps.

Be sure to visit the MacStories concept for additional high-resolution mockups and detailed descriptions of other proposed enhancements, such as improvements to Notes and Control Center, better extension support in Safari and more.
