Suggested March 2024 Glip: The Free Team Collaboration App That’s Changing How Teams Work Together

If your overflowing inbox is a constant source of shame and anxiety, instead of deleting all, consider a tool proven to help reduce email clutter and increase productivity: a team collaboration app.

Many companies have discovered that collaboration apps – think Slack and Microsoft Teams, to name a few – can be effective at reducing the back-and-forth of email chains by streamlining internal communication. But isn’t that just swapping a mountain of email for a relentless barrage of instant messages from people who expect you to reply immediately?

If it is, then you’re doing something wrong.

The best team collaboration apps do so much more than allow employees to chat with an individual coworker or an entire team in real time. They also provide features to foster collaboration, enhance workflow, and increase team performance. Glip is one such feature-packed app: it offers video chat, unlimited messages, storage, and integrations, as well as an impressive array of special capabilities aimed at boosting productivity and engagement, including team messaging, file sharing, and task management. Best of all, it’s completely free to use.

Glip’s Features

Superior team messaging: Communication may be at the center of teamwork, but only if that communication can be easily tracked and accessed whenever and wherever team members need it. (This is where email can become burdensome and overwhelming.)

Glip’s team messaging hub organizes and prioritizes communication by project or business functions, so employees can reduce email clutter and information overload and instead focus on the work that needs to be accomplished. The best part? Messaging, along with posts, storage, and integration, is unlimited.

Convenient file sharing: Having instant access to all assets needed for a project is essential for a team to maintain momentum. That’s why Glip’s file-sharing feature is so valuable for businesses, allowing users to share files from their computer (or pulled through integrations with cloud storage tools like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Evernote) directly into the conversation stream. This way you don’t waste time toggling back and forth between apps or searching your beast of an inbox for project-related documents. Everything you need is right there on one screen in Glip.

Another convenient feature that streamlines productivity: collaborative document editing, including solid image and PDF markup tools.

Task management: Glip’s team calendar and built-in task management tool are a couple of its standout features. Users can easily create, assign, share, and track tasks in any team or conversation – without having to switch over to another project management app.

Glip’s task management is also fun to use, especially if you’re someone who loves to organize. Color code tasks based on urgency or category. Filter tasks by status, project, assignees, deadline, teams, and more. The sophisticated interface makes it easier than ever to track team progress and hold your employees accountable.

The struggle of emptying your inbox is real, but you can save yourself the hassle by trying Glip for free today.

What’s The Best Way For Seo, Topic Experts & Writers To Work Together?

In this edition of Ask An SEO, Zach from Wichita writes us:

“How would an SEO specialist write a content brief for an industry expert with very little writing experience?

Or how should my company structure our content writing process when we have an SEO person, industry expert, and content writer/editor?”

Great question, Zach. Before we dig into content briefs, I have a question: Why is someone with very little writing experience doing the writing?

Writing is a skilled trade.

Sure, some have a natural talent and affinity for it. But many people would rather get dental work without sedation than have to write an article, blog post, or some other form of content for their work.

Time and again, I’ve seen that forcing topic experts to write – even on topics they’re passionate about – fails on every front.

Your topic expert tends to spend way longer than a skilled writer would on the piece.

Maybe marketing asked them to do it. Maybe they’re semi-bought-in as they like the thought leadership potential but they’re still experiencing the frustration of the writing process.

They’re stressed out and can even become resentful as this is just another task on their to-do list.

So let’s tackle this piece first.

Setting Your Topic Experts & SEO Writers Up For Success

I’ve been ghostwriting for over 15 years. Here’s the first thing I always ask a new author I’m ghosting for:

“How can I make this easier for you? What do you want this process to look like?”

Then I’ll ask questions to figure out the best way to get their knowledge and topic expertise out of their head and into mine.

Have you already worked on an outline or even a rough draft you want me to run with?

Would you like to make me a bullet list of all the important information you want to see included?

Do you have 15 minutes to jump on a call and I’ll pick your brain?

Want to send me voice notes? A doodle? Smoke signals? Let’s do this.

The first thing you can do to set your topic experts and writers up for a productive, collaborative relationship is to give them the freedom to define their own processes.

I used to create content for a polar expeditions brand. For content generation purposes, I regularly interviewed their polar experts. Most of these people worked on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions a good chunk of the year.

Ever tried to interview a polar bear researcher in Russia who only gets to a payphone once a week?

How about a penguinologist (it’s a real thing!) who spends months at a time circulating Antarctica gathering penguin poop and feathers for DNA studies?

Here’s the thing: whether writing as polar experts, software engineers, C-level executives, SEO thought leaders, or real estate agents (to name just a few), I’ve found that every topic expert has their own preferences on how to share that knowledge.

Some experts get too nervous about being interviewed to do well in a face-to-face conversation about the topic.

Others love nothing more than to chat about their area of expertise.

What’s important is that your topic experts understand a few key things about this relationship.

Here’s what you as the leader of this initiative need to convey to the expert, and also build into your shared process:

1. Trust that the writer is here to help you.

Dear Sir or Madam Expert: This isn’t going to be an exposé. We’re bringing on a writer(s) who specializes in crafting optimized content to tell your story in the best possible way.

Their goal is to write a post befitting your level of expertise.

They’re literally here to make you look good.

They’re going to save you time and help us get all of that super important topic knowledge out of your head and onto paper in a way that search engines and readers alike can discover and appreciate it.

2. You choose how we work together.

Do you want to send an outline, forward some articles or research that’s inspired you, schedule an interview, share previously published works? Let’s do it.

Or do you need project management help, a video conferencing platform, or assistance with scheduling?

We’ll put the resources in place (budget permitting) to facilitate you telling your story.

3. You get the final say on everything.

Yes, it can be scary to give permission to have someone else write as you.

What if they make you look bad?

Don’t worry: you as our topic expert get final sign-off on anything that goes out in your name.

And for you as the leader of this process: make sure that review and approval are actually built into your editorial workflow so this essential step is never missed.

A Few Quick Notes On Process

If we were to boil this down to a step-by-step process, yours could look something like this:

Research the topic and consult your topic expert and SEO team in creating the brief – more on that in a minute.

Assign the brief to the writer.

Arrange for transfer of knowledge from topic expert to writer.

Writer creates first draft.

Topic expert reviews to ensure the content quality, depth, and all important information is there.

If it’s not, there may be a revision at this point.

Once writer and topic expert are satisfied, it goes to the Editor for review.*

Any other revisions requested by the Editor are completed.

Go time.

*Zach, I did notice that you said, “content writer/editor” in your question, and I hope that was a typo. These are not the same person.

Your content always needs a second set of eyes before publication.

The editor will fact-check the writer’s work, run copyright checks, optimize for search, ensure the content is in keeping with your brand’s style guide, and edit for use of language, tone, structure, and more.

In large organizations, the editing process might involve separate editors for mechanical editing, substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

Or, a few types of edits might be handled by one person.

What matters is that your company understands what’s involved in the publishing process and that each of these checks is built into it at some point.

That’s what it takes now to win in competitive SERPs where expertise, authority, trustworthiness, accuracy, and other qualities of top-performing content are table stakes.

Now, to your question about how the SEO specialist will create the brief.

Tips & Tricks For SEO Content Creative Briefs

I’m going to tell you a secret that an awful lot of people get wrong.

No one cares about what you need to say; it’s all about what your audience needs to hear.

Too often, the writer is handed a brief that’s little more than a laundry list of things the expert (or more often, their colleagues in marketing and PR) want to say.

Tell them all of our features.

Make sure you mention these selling points!

Don’t forget we won those two awards last year.

Can you drop this quote from our CEO in there?

Here are two case studies you should mention.

This is how content created by well-intentioned companies becomes that guy at the party who corners you and talks about himself and how awesome he is until you fake a washroom break and go home early.

Don’t be that guy.

A good content brief includes a bit of that “here’s what we want to say.”

But it also incorporates:

The purpose of the piece; what goal you want the reader to achieve or problem you want to solve.

Notes on the author’s style and tone of voice, with examples if possible.

The intended format and length of the piece and whether that’s flexible.

Who your audience is and why they care about this topic.

What their learning outcomes or next steps are going to be.

SEO insights into how people are talking about this topic, what questions they have, who else is ranking on it, and more.

Identified opportunities for achieving featured snippets or multimedia placement in the SERPs with content formatted or structured in specific ways.

Reliable sources of information for background.

Your writer can take this understanding of what you’re looking for, who it’s for, and what it needs to look like and add in all of that rich insight the topic expert has to share.

That’s where the magic happens.

Bringing It All Together For SEO-Friendly, Expert-Led Content

If I had to wrap this up in a single sentence, my answer to your original question would be this: Get each person involved in your content creation process doing what they’re best at.

Don’t force your topic experts to fret over a blank screen if they have no desire to write.

Don’t expect your writers to inherently know SEO; invest in those who do or in training yours up.

Don’t ask writers to read your expert’s mind or write PR fluff.

If you want to produce top-quality, expert content at scale, treat your content workflow as a publishing operation.

Make sure all parties have the necessary input; that your SEO insights, company goals, audience needs, and expertise are reflected in a clear brief for the writer.

Then let them do their work.

Support your content creators with an editorial process that will prevent any headache-inducing issues around copyright or other mistakes that could harm your brand.

The results are worth it when you have a steady stream of well-written, expert-led content optimized for discovery and conversion right out of the gate.

How Does The Sessions Work?

Introduction to Laravel Session

Sessions are an essential part of the Laravel PHP framework. It helps to make it possible to store information of the user across multiple requests on the server. Unified API helps to access various session backends that Laravel ships. All the files of the session configuration are stored at config/session.php. Laravel automatically uses the file session driver which is compatible with many applications. Driver configuration is a session that defines where the session data is to be stored for each of the requests. Different drivers available in Laravel are file, APC, array, cookie, Redis, Memcached, and database. They assist in handling session data.

Web development, programming languages, Software testing & others

What are the Laravel Sessions?

The different drivers which are made available in laravel session are as follows:

File: Here, the sessions are stored in the directory – storage/framework/sessions.

Cookie: Secure and encrypted cookies are where the sessions are stored.

Database: Sessions here are stored in a relational database.

Array: A PHP array is where the sessions are stored and they will not be persisted any further.

Memcached/Redis: These are fast and cache-based stores and sessions are also stored inside them.

Given below are the two ways of operating session:

Request instance

Global session helper

Whenever the session data needs to be accessed, it is accessed via an instance of a session with the help of an HTTP request. The get() method is used after getting the instance wherein one argument “key” is used to get the session data.

For, global helper the code is as follows:

The retrieving of Session Data is possible in Laravel. When you store data and want to retrieve it anytime later.

You can do so in two different ways, i.e. with the help of Session Helper and Request Instance.

To retrieve with the help of Global Helper.

$result= session ('key');

To retrieve with Request Instance.

This is how the sessions are retrieved with the help of the key.

To retrieve all the data that is stored in the application, we can use all method on the request instance.

Another option to retrieve session data is with the available default argument.

// Closure Return 'default value'; });

How does Laravel Sessions work?

Laravel session helps you to access session data, store session data, delete session data, and also retrieve session data. There are various designated steps to perform these varied actions in the Laravel application. With the help of sessions, you can handle the data of the users and also store it securely in your application. The data is well organized and saved in the application. The user can refer to the data at any point in time with the help of the retrieving option that is available in the application. Also if there is a need to delete the data from the stored space, it is possible with sessions. Also, the sole authority is in the hands of the administrator. Nobody else can handle data; be it storing, deleting, or retrieving.

Sessions are very crucial for any web application. It is important to know of all its use cases. Even authentication status and similar kind of log data can be stored in the sessions. There can be errors that may arise in the sessions if they are not coded or followed properly by the user. There can be HTTP request errors too. Do not panic during such situations and rework on the following of the instructions carefully.

Has method needs to be used to confirm if a value you want to find about is present in the session. The purpose of the has method is that it helps in returning the true value if it is present in the session and if it is not present the return will be null in confirmation.

// }

How to remove all items from the session?

The flush method needs to be used if you want to flush out all the data from the session. This will wipe every single data present and therefore it is termed as flush symbolically.

When you want to flash all the data that is present in the session you will have to use a different approach. It can be possible that there may be times when you may have to store items in your session only for the next request that follows. Use the flash method when such a demand may arise. Only during a subsequent HTTP request, this data will be available following which it will be deleted.

Example of Laravel Session

Given below is the example mentioned:

1. Create a migration table

first generate a migration file

Php artisan session: table

now, migrate generated sessions table

2. Php artisan migrate

The sample migration file will be generated with the following contents in it.

Schema::create('sessions', function ($table) { });

Once the migration table has been created, open the .env file to change the following line in it.

SESSION_DRIVER=database Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that Laravel Sessions plays an important role in securing and storing data of the users and the log details which can be stored, deleted, or retrieved when needed. They can be customized as per the need of handling the data in a particular way. The users need to follow the method appropriately to get the correct results.

How Css Work Under The Hood?

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a style sheet language which used to add visual effects to the web page. It is used to describe the page layout and display of HTML elements. A good deal of time is saved via CSS. Multiple web pages’ layouts can be managed simultaneously using it. It enables the developers to implement various custom properties to the different elements which enhances the appearance of your web page. In this article, we will learn about CSS and how does it work.

CSS is basically classified into 3 types −

Internal CSS – To give a single element a unique appearance, use an inline style. Use inline styles by adding the style attribute to the appropriate element. The style attribute is a container for any CSS property.

Syntax selector{ property: value; } Example

Given below is an example of how to use CSS within a HTML page. Here, we have inline CSS. The h1 element is underlined, while the div element is green colored.

h1{ text-decoration: underline; } div{ width: 30%; height: 30px; background-color: green; }

Why should we use CSS?

Time Saving– It provides substantial time savings. Since CSS style definitions are kept in separate CSS files, altering one of those files might have an impact on the entire website.

Multiple Attributes – Compared to plain HTML, CSS offers more precise options for determining the appearance and feel of a website.

Fast page loading – When using CSS, HTML tag attributes do not always need to be written. It is possible to write a rule for a tag only once and have it apply to all instances of that tag. Because CSS uses less code, downloading is quicker.

Website maintenance – A website needs it for maintenance. By just changing the style, all of the components on the web page will instantaneously update if we need to make a global modification to the file. The website’s design may be readily modified thanks to the CSS file’s flexibility.

ulti-device compatibility – We can use CSS with previous language versions since it has traditionally been compatible with them. Because of this, if the CSS application is created using an earlier version of a programming language and the developer merges it with more recent developments, CSS may be easily integrated with the required adjustments, allowing the developer to successfully update the existing code. Multiple device types can be accommodated by content using CSS.

Working of CSS under the hood

The actual procedure of calculating the final CSS property for a given HTML element is a series of extremely sophisticated steps −

Data Accumulation

At this stage, all style declarations for a specific element are gathered from various sources such as user agents, writers, and users. These declarations must be filtered and validated in order to determine whether they are from stylesheets that are now applicable to this document and are syntactically valid.

Cascading

The word CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, which is the essential concept of CSS. This phase must be thoroughly understood because it is the only one that is heavily influenced by developers as author origin. This phase takes an unordered list of declarations collected in the previous step and arranges them in descending order of priority using the following criteria −

Based on a mix of declaration sources (user agent, user, author, transition, animation) and !important annotation.

Based on the specificity of the selector

Based on the order in which they are written

Setting Default Values

When there are no declarations, this step is invoked when attempting to set a value for a CSS property of an element.

Fixing

To get maximum flexibility in responsive design, we use several relative units (auto, em, rem, vh), relative URLs, percentages, or certain human readable keywords (small, normal, bold). This stage will attempt to resolve as many property values as feasible without laying the document, performing network queries, or getting values from somewhere other than its parent.

Formatting

This phase will format the whole document and complete any leftover work from the previous step by attempting to compute the absolute theoretical value utilized in the document’s layout. This stage focuses on scenarios such as relative coordination of elements, auto layout, and flex layout. It necessitates several calculations but yields nearly completely useable absolute numbers for browsers to utilize.

Final Changes

Before drawing, this final stage will perform several modifications dependent on the surfing environment, such as browser engine, media kinds, device pixel density, or OS systems. Rounding float numbers to integer values or changing font size based on available fonts are two frequent changes.

Nedra Barr: Changing The Landscape Of Insurance With Technology

A couple of years ago, we’d be having a completely different conversation about women in technology. The situation was bleaker than now and women were struggling to get their capabilities and desire to work in this field visible. At present, the number of women in technical roles across organizations has increased and we can only be hopeful that the journey for women in technology is uphill. This is a result of a combination of things like awareness within the companies to release the potential in women, the shift in the global outlook online, factual research in favor of women. The world becomes a better place when every woman is able to realize her dreams, and while there are several notable women in technology to talk about, we’re commencing this magazine issue with the spotlight on The 10 Most Impactful Women in Technology 2023 by talking to Nedra Barr, Co-founder, and CEO of

Her Tech Project, Spyder

Spyder is a new SaaS software company serving the insurance industry.  The company loops together licensed insurance and financial services representatives with home offices to connect and provide products and services throughout the entire supply chain. Spyder’s e-commerce platform provides the tools and services every producer needs to manage their business digitally. Its full suite of digital solutions helps home offices streamline the management of their field force.

Her Role at Spyder

Nedra Barr is the Co-Founder and CEO of the newly launched SaaS Software company, Spyder, Inc. A dynamic leader, she helps companies visualize, strategize, and engage in new technology solutions that improve their businesses. Nedra is an accomplished speaker and author who has contributed to many industry white papers throughout her career. She was awarded a “Top 50 Tech Visionary” as well as a “Top 50 Tech Leaders” award from Intercon. After starting her insurance career at the age of 16 in Fort Scott, Kansas, throughout her career, she sought ways to help others succeed and found the opportunity in 2000 when she moved into Insuretech/Fintech. Nedra has led teams and guided tech firms, including SunGard Insurance Systems, Insurance Technologies, Experian, and Docupace Technologies. Most recently, Nedra was the Chief Revenue Officer for Skience. She has been instrumental in solution designing and providing the vision for how technology can meet companies’ operational and regulatory needs. In addition to her role at Spyder, she sits on various Advisory Boards.

Her Success Credits – Kindness and Comedy

“I realized many years ago that people respond positively to kindness and comedy, so I insert a little bit in every conversation. You never know what kind of day someone is having and sometimes a little kindness and comedy can help”, said Nedra in high spirits. She further added how she learned long ago that a strong work ethic coupled with high achievement would serve her well. “I also think women are problem solvers by nature and I’ve combined my work ethic and love of solving problems to achieve strong results for companies”, she continued. “Because I started my work life so young; I’ve had opportunities to seek out top-performing individuals to understand how they’ve had such success in their lives. Very early in my career, I incorporated what I learned from their experiences and modeled my behaviors to track to success while ensuring I learned from my own bumps and bruises.”

A Journey with Stop Signs and Bumps

The biggest challenges she faced early in her career were being female (and a very short one at that) and that she doesn’t have a four-year college degree. She always had to physically look up at the men that she was working with and they were looking down at her. Nedra says that psychologically, that’s not a good place to start with someone looking down at you. She knew she had to find a way to get through that would allow others to see her as an equal not less than. She further talked about how her education panned out her career as we know it today. “I don’t have a 4-year college degree; however, I graduated from High school and Jr. College within a few months of each other. I started going to the Jr. College the summer of my 9th-grade year because it was something interesting to do, but at the end that was a smart decision as it turned out that by senior year, the 4-year college just wasn’t in the cards. I was already working in the insurance industry selling all types of insurance. This was a great experience for me as I learned about all things insurance and business in the early stage of my career. “ To overcome these perceived challenges, her philosophy at that time was just to outwork everyone else. Outwork them physically, be mentally tougher than anyone else and execute on every little thing that she was taught to do. “I had great mentors when starting out in insurance, Mr. William Hammer and his son Jim Hammer. Both taught me to have a strong work ethic and that you build your business brick by brick.  Lay the proper foundation so your business will grow the right way. I translated that into the notion that every customer and their experience is important and reflects on you as a person. Make those interactions count”, she exclaimed.

Continuous Learning

“This is an exercise we have just gone through with the evolution of Spyder and it’s a continual process of learning”, explained Nedra regarding the innovation it takes to satisfy the target audience. “We find individuals working in the area where we want to learn more to pick their brains and learn from those who actually do the jobs on a day-to-day basis.”

Embracing Disruptive Technologies

According to Nedra, the role of a leader has changed pretty drastically over the last few years.  CEOs and other leaders used to set the strategic direction, pace, tone, and culture for the company and it was left up to the workers to execute those plans. Today, more C-level executives are rolling up their sleeves and being more involved with the day-to-day business. “Spyder is automating many processes and products into one platform for producers and home offices to leverage to help manage and grow their respective businesses. We are using Cloud Computing and Big Data in our solutions in cutting-edge ways. The focus of software today needs to be automation, integration, digitization, and simplification”, she explained.

The Future of Spyder

“I see a great future for Spyder. It is purpose-built for insurance/financial services representation and their home office relationships. It’s not an understatement to say there is nothing like it on the market. We will be automating and streamlining the supply chain to make a producer’s life far more manageable than it is today.” As evident from many industries, automation can mean a reduction of overall costs and time savings with better communication outcomes. This is what Spyder plans to accomplish in insurance.

Vital Attributes of a Transformational Leader, From One Leader to Another

As one of the lead women in technology, Nedra said, “Transformational leaders pose a  strength or confidence that can be felt throughout the team. Every team needs leadership, structure, and accountability that is felt by every employee at the company. If your people or employees don’t know what the mission is….it will likely fail. Leaders also need to know how to build the right teams. It takes a team to win and execute, so build your teams with the right individuals in the right roles.” She also stresses the fact that leaders have a very important role to make their employees feel welcome, valued, and heard. Leaders need to make sure that people have a path for growth within their role or the company. People tend to leave when they feel underappreciated or underutilized. It’s poor business to invest in recruiting talented employees only to have them sit on the shelf.

Always be Ready

A couple of years ago, we’d be having a completely different conversation about women in technology. The situation was bleaker than now and women were struggling to get their capabilities and desire to work in this field visible. At present, the number of women in technical roles across organizations has increased and we can only be hopeful that the journey for women in technology is uphill. This is a result of a combination of things like awareness within the companies to release the potential in women, the shift in the global outlook online, factual research in favor of women. The world becomes a better place when every woman is able to realize her dreams, and while there are several notable women in technology to talk about, we’re commencing this magazine issue with the spotlight on The 10 Most Impactful Women in Technology 2023 by talking to Nedra Barr, Co-founder, and CEO of Spyder Spyder is a new SaaS software company serving the insurance industry. The company loops together licensed insurance and financial services representatives with home offices to connect and provide products and services throughout the entire supply chain. Spyder’s e-commerce platform provides the tools and services every producer needs to manage their business digitally. Its full suite of digital solutions helps home offices streamline the management of their field force.Nedra Barr is the Co-Founder and CEO of the newly launched SaaS Software company, Spyder, Inc. In addition to her role at Spyder, she sits on various Advisory Boards.“I realized many years ago that people respond positively to kindness and comedy, so I insert a little bit in every conversation. Very early in my career, I incorporated what I learned from their experiences and modeled my behaviors to track to success while ensuring I learned from my own bumps and bruises.”The biggest challenges she faced early in her career were being female (and a very short one at that) and that she doesn’t have a four-year college degree. Make those interactions count”, she exclaimed.“This is an exercise we have just gone through with the evolution of Spyder and it’s a continual process of learning”, explained Nedra regarding the innovation it takes to satisfy the target audience. “We find individuals working in the area where we want to learn more to pick their brains and learn from those who actually do the jobs on a day-to-day basis.”According to Nedra, the role of a leader has changed pretty drastically over the last few years. The focus of software today needs to be automation, integration, digitization, and simplification”, she explained.“I see a great future for Spyder. When you’re ready….go for it! While you can learn a company’s products and services fairly easily; having your management style defined will help you align the two easily and faster. For instance, know who you are as a boss – are you kind, fair, and considerate of your employees? What is your tone with your employees? How do your direct reports perceive you and how you carry out your messages? Thinking about these things before you take on a leadership position will help in the long run. Lastly, speak up and be heard. A silent leader isn’t a leader”, she concluded.
