Emoji are fun to use for nearly any occasion, and while there seems to be an endless number to pick from, learning to create your own emoji is the best way to get exactly what you want. Because let’s face it, sometimes there just isn’t an emoji for that exact expression on your face.

How To Create Your Own Emoji On iPhone

When you use the New option from the app’s home screen, you get several creation tools. From left to right, this is the order in which you make your emoji:

Pick a template, like a multi-colored base, a square face, or a taco head.

Choose a pair of eyes.

Decide on some eyebrows.

Flip through the mouth options to find a suitable one.

Add some facial hair if you want.

Optionally pick some hand gestures.

Select one of the objects to have your emoji stand out.

Choose a hat for your emoji.

Every option is customizable, so you can drag them around the emoji background, rotate them, and resize them using normal finger gestures. Tap the download button when you’re finished to save your custom emoji to your gallery.

When you’re ready to use your custom-built emoji, use the app drawer next to the keyboard to select the two-faced Emojily icon. It’s there that you’ll find the emoji you made.

Emoji Me Animated Faces is a similar free app for iPhone and iPad. iOS 13 and iPadOS users can make emoji with Memoji. Animated Memoji is available only on iPhone X and later, iPad Pro 11-in, and iPad Pro 12.9-in (3rd gen).

How To Create Your Own Emoji On Android

Making your own emoji on Android is easy with Emoji Maker. If you don’t want to spend time making your own, there’s also a gallery you can browse to find popular emoji made by other users.

Something unique about this emoji maker is that as you’re choosing the various parts of the emoji, you get to see a preview immediately. This helps you decide what to pick because you don’t have to guess how it will look if you select it.

Here’s how Emoji Maker works on Android:

The free online emoji maker at Labeley is an excellent resource for building your own emoji. You can use the full screen of your desktop computer to make large emoji by picking a shape, background color, eyebrows, facial features, accessories, and text. 

When you’re done, you can share the emoji over Facebook Pinterest, or Twitter, or save it to your computer to do with it as you wish.

Emoji-maker is similar but is much easier to save to your computer. There are lots of options for face shapes and other features, and a built-in text tool lets you write on the emoji.

The piZap emoji maker is another option for computer users. Several of the options cost, and a high-quality export isn’t free either, but there are still lots of unique emoji building tools (and the standard-quality export is definitely still good enough).

As you can see, there are lots of ways to make your own emoji. You can do it on your computer, from your Android or iPhone, or on a tablet. 

Some of these methods are better than others if you want to send the emoji via your phone’s keyboard, but others are great for emailing or Facebooking the emoji from a computer or using the emoji in other projects.

How To Create Your Own All

From Gmail to Facebook Messenger, from WhatsApp to Telegram, there are tons of ways to send your messages, and most of us are attached to at least several of them. If each one has a dedicated app to open it, imagine how many apps we have to open to stay up to date. Other than cluttering your desktop, opening many instances of apps also eats system resources.

One solution is to use a dedicated all-in-one message center such as Franz. Unfortunately, there are only a few of these kinds of apps, and most of them are either slow to update or are paid apps.

But there’s another alternative. You can easily create your all-in-one message center containing virtually any messenger that you want, and more, with the help of Chrome SSB (site-specific-browser).

Why Chrome SSB?

As the name suggests, SSB allows you to run a site as a standalone desktop app in a dedicated browser. That desktop app could have its own settings according to users’ needs. If you are a Mac user, there are several SSB makers that you could try such as the Safari-based Fluid and the Chrome-based Epichrome. By collecting web versions of messenger apps, you could have all of your most-used messengers under one roof. We are going to use Epichrome here.

If SSB is just another instance of a browser, we could ask, “Why not use a browser instead?” Any computer user could open a new tab and visit the web version of any messenger app.

But if you do that, it would be just another tab that you could close at any time. You won’t have the luxury of having your messengers open all the time when you close your browsing session.

But using Epichrome means there are tons of great browser extensions, and you can add them to enrich your messengers only to the SSB without cluttering your main browser.

Setting Up the Message Center

We won’t go into the process of setting up an SSB using Epichrome since it’s already been discussed here. The only difference is for our message center; you will add multiple web addresses in the settings instead of one.

By choosing to add tabs, you could add multiple messengers that you use often. Try to find out the web address of these messengers using the help of the good old search engine.

In my settings I add two Gmail accounts, Telegram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, but you can virtually add anything with a URL. The few things that come to mind are Twitter, LinkedIn, and Slack.

You also need to enable the desktop notifications if you want to get notified every time a new message arrives. Every web-based messenger has its own way of asking users to enable desktop notifications, but you can be sure they will ask you to give permission.

And this is on WhatsApp.

Don’t Stop at a Message Center

But why stop yourself with an All-in-One Message Center? You could also create another SSB for your work containing all the web tools that you use for your job. Or you could also create one for all of your news reading, for social networking, for researching, etc. You get the point.

Just because an SSB is created to convert a website into a desktop app, it doesn’t mean that it’s limited only on one website.

Using my All-in-One Message Center, I can ditch Franz – which used to be good but now is a little outdated. I can turn all the message windows on or off as I need without messing with my main browser. And I can get notified about new messages and deal with them in real-time without the need to pick up my phone.

How To Install Kliqqi On Ubuntu To Create Your Own Social Community

Kliqqi is a social community content management system that allows you to create responsive and beautifully-designed online social media communities. With Kliqqi you can host and create your own social network similar to Twitter or Facebook. In this tutorial we will show you how to install Kliqqi on Ubuntu.


Assuming you have a Ubuntu server, you will need to have the following applications installed and running:


PHP –  at least version 5.4

MySQL – at least version 5.1

Creating Kliqqi Database

Before we start, the first step will be creating a database and a user for Kliqqi. In your server log in to MySQL and create a Kliqqi database using the following commands:

Creating Kliqqi Database User

Create a database user with privileges to access the Kliqqi database. We can do that using the commands below:


















Replace ‘password’ with your own password.

Exit from the MySQL console using the exit or q commands.

Installing Kliqqi

After getting the database set up, we are now going to install Kliqqi. You can find a stable version on its download page. Use the command below to download it:

After the download is complete, extract the zipped file using the command below:

Building your own PC is easy, but is it even possible to build your own laptop? Surprisingly, the answer is “yes,” but it all depends on how you define “building” a laptop. There are many different ways to get precisely the laptop you want.

Why Is It Hard To Build Your Laptop?

One of the greatest strengths in the desktop PC world is that everything is based on open standards. So CPUs, graphics cards, motherboards, and other components are all built to fit together in standard ways.

The problem with this approach is that it wastes space and isn’t very efficient. That doesn’t matter when you’re plopping a tower case computer on your desk, but when you have to carry around a computer with you, it needs to be compact. While the technology in a laptop is still the same as in a desktop computer at a fundamental level, the actual design and form factors aren’t. 

There are few (if any) standards on how to design and build laptops. Laptops are replete with custom hardware, which is permanently soldered in. That’s why the idea of building a laptop by buying a set of components and then putting it all together yourself doesn’t make a lot of sense. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t get the laptop you want.

Upgrading an Existing Laptop

You can upgrade most laptop RAM and hard drives, but you can’t change the core components of most of them. At least not if you lack the knowledge and equipment to resolder parts.

Speccing Out a New Laptop

If you’re ordering a new laptop online, why not get the components you want? There’s often a fine selection of pre-built laptop models covering the most popular configurations. Though you might think your needs are unique, there’s probably a pre-built laptop with precisely what you need already on a shelf somewhere.

Ordering a Custom Laptop

For most people, building your own laptop means ordering a custom laptop. Unlike pre-built laptops on the shelf and ready to ship, custom laptops are incomplete laptops that don’t have their final components installed.

You’ll often see an option to “customize and buy” laptops on the manufacturer’s website. This indicates that someone will assemble the laptop to your specifications within the possibilities of that laptop frame.

The main downside of this option is that you’ll have to wait a few weeks before your laptop arrives. After all, an actual person has to put it all together, test it and send it on its way to you. You’re also going to pay a little more for the privilege of factory customization. But then again, if the perfect prebuilt machine were out there, you wouldn’t have to go down the route of building your laptop in the first place!

Buying a Barebones Laptop

Barebones laptops are an interesting option close to the idea of “building” your laptop. When you buy one, you essentially get a laptop that’s missing a CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and sometimes even components such as the Wi-Fi module and keyboard. These laptops also come with no operating system, so you’ll have to decide which one you want.

Barebones laptops often use standard desktop CPUs and offer a desktop CPU socket. However, there will be limits to the maximum TDP (Thermal Design Power) of the CPU you install. Anything higher will be too much for the power and cooling solution of that particular barebones laptop.

In terms of GPU selection, most barebones laptops use the MXM mobile GPU standard. You can read more about MXM in our laptop upgrade article. Most other components for barebones laptops should be standard. However, if you also need a keyboard, webcam, or another tightly integrated part, it will likely only be available from the barebones laptop maker.

Using a Laptop Shell

There’s a particular class of laptop computers that don’t contain any sort of computer at all. It’s usually just a clamshell case, screen, mouse, keyboard, and other basic peripherals.

The idea is to use another device as the “brains” of the laptop. For example, Samsung’s Dex feature gives you access to a complete desktop environment simply by connecting the phone to a USB-C dock and peripherals. A Dex-compatible laptop brings merely all those components together in a laptop shell. This means you don’t have to carry two devices around; you have just one computer that you either use as a smartphone or as a laptop as the need arises.

There are also laptop shells that can work with devices such as the Raspberry Pi into a laptop. Examples include the CrowPi2 and Elecrow. Since these tiny educational computer boards are so small, they can work with various laptop shells designed for them.

Buy a Modular Laptop System

The ultimate dream of building a laptop is to have complete modularity. Don’t like your GPU? Swap it out. Need more ports? No problem! Not only does this allow you to build the laptop you want, but it also means you can adapt the laptop to fit different use cases. Perhaps when you go on a business trip, you’ll put in more battery power and remove the powerful GPU you don’t need right now.

So far, only one company has made a genuine attempt at creating such a device. Framework has created an ecosystem that claims to offer all the upgradability and flexibility of desktop systems while not compromising what makes laptops so popular.

Framework is a new offering, and it’s not clear if any other companies will follow suit. Still, they do promise that you can, for example, replace your current motherboard and CPU with a newer model in the future without buying a whole new laptop.

Create A Portable Workspace By Building Your Own Folding Saw Horses

Saw horses are a must-have for every serious DIYer, whether you’re actually using a saw or not. Just set ‘em up, drop something flat on top (maybe a piece of wood or a sturdy, flattened box), and you’ve got a work surface ready for woodworking, wiring electronics, or pretty much anything you’d do on a table. They’re even more valuable if you don’t have a lot of space or a dedicated work area in your home. Plus, they’re easy to make.

Rigid saw horses are the simplest—often nothing more than five pieces of wood nailed together—but they take up a lot of room with their permanently splayed legs. So if space in your house or apartment is at a premium, foldable saw horses are the way to go, even if building them is slightly more complicated. When you’re done working, you’ll be able to close the legs and store them snugly against a wall or in a tight space until you need them again.


Time: 30-45 minutes per horse

Cost: $20-$30 per horse

Difficulty: easy

Materials Tools Instructions

1. Set up your work area. If you’re building saw horses, you probably don’t have a proper workspace, so here’s your chance to improvise. I put a big, flat box on top of two garbage cans.

2. Cut the top boards. These sections of 2-by-4 will be your load-bearing surfaces—your horses’ backs. Most saw horses are between 42 and 48 inches long, but you should pick what works best for you. I cut mine at 42, which is the answer to “life, the universe, and everything.” As you will for every cut you make during this project, mark the wood at the proper length, and use the square and pencil to draw a straight line to guide your saw. Once you’ve made your cuts, use the sandpaper to quickly get rid of any splinters—it’s better than stabbing yourself later.

Tip: If you’re working alone and don’t have a miter saw, use a hand saw to make your first cuts. Cutting 42 inches off an 8-foot 2-by-4 means all that wood is going to be unsupported, and it will constrict the spinning circular saw blade as it falls, stopping it or kicking the saw out of the wood. That’s useless, at best, and unsafe, at worst. You should be able to manually cut through a 2-by-4 in less than a minute—and if you go fast enough, your cut piece will fall cleanly to the ground.

3. Rough-cut the legs. A comfortable saw horse height is directly related to the user’s height, so the length of these will vary based on your needs. (For example, a 32-inch-tall saw horse is generally fine for a 6-foot-tall person.) To make this step a bit easier, cut your remaining 2-by-4s into four pieces of 40 inches each. That will give you some length to play with.

Tip: Stand upright and hold your arm by your side. Then, without moving the rest of your arm, flex your wrist until your hand is horizontal, palm facing down. The distance from your palm to the ground is approximately the height your saw horses should be.

4. Figure out the angle you want between your saw horse’s legs. Mine are splayed at 30 degrees, but you might like something different. Anywhere between 25 and 35 degrees should work well; anything narrower will mean taller, less-stable saw horses, and anything wider will take up more space.

5. Cut the tops of your saw horse’s legs at an angle. Once you’ve got your leg separation angle set, you’ll need to cut the top of each leg at an angle that’s half that. Given that my angle was 30 degrees, the cut had to be 15 degrees. Quickly square a straight line across the widest surface of each leg and about 1/4 inch from the end to serve as a guide. Then, set your saw at the proper angle, line the blade up at the line, and make your cut. Repeat for each leg.

6. Figure out the proper length of your saw horses’ legs. This is important to ensure that the saw horses will be the height you desire. I wanted mine to be 32 inches tall, so I subtracted the width of the top board (1.5 inches), to get 30.5 inches from the ground to the bottom of the horse’s back. Essentially, each leg is the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and I’d just figured out the triangle’s height. The problem was, I didn’t know the length of the other two sides. If you’re good at math, you can probably solve a couple equations to get those numbers—but I’m much better with words than I am with numbers, so I used a calculator I found online. It told me each leg should be 31.5 inches long, and it was right.

Note: If you use the calculator I’ve linked, select the option that allows you to input both the length of the base and the angle. My numbers, for instance, were 30.5 for base and 15 for angle.

7. Prepare to cut the bottoms of your saw horses’ legs at an angle. This is where things get a little tricky. It’s the same angle as the tops of the legs (15 degrees, in my case), but oriented in the opposite direction. Essentially, you’re turning each leg into a parallelogram. If you make the wrong cut here, the leg will be useless.

8. Cut the bottoms of your saw horses’ legs. Lay one saw horse leg on your work surface, widest surface up, with the uncut end off the edge, ready to be cut. Make sure the other end is laying with its angled cut sloping up, like a hill, not down, like a rocky overhang. Measure your desired length, mark a line across the wood, and make your cut. Repeat until all legs are the proper length.

Tip: It will be hard to measure from the angled end of the 2-by-4, so measure from the uncut end to where the wood starts sloping down. Then, subtract your desired length from the actual length and mark that on the wood. My legs were 39.5 inches from the uncut end to the beginning of the downward slope. So, I marked a line across the wood at 8 inches and made my cut there. Perfect.

9. Attach the hinges. Get two saw horse legs and lay them end-to-end, the angled cuts touching on top, not at the bottom. Knock the connecting pin out of the hinges and center one hinge half on the end of one leg where the two touch. Do the same with the other half. They shouldn’t interlock or hang over the edge of the leg they’re on. They should, however, look like they’re about to fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. Screw them down with the screws they came with.

Tip: You can knock the connecting pin out by hammering a nail punch or pretty much any thin piece of metal (a screw, perhaps) into the opposite end from the pinhead.

10. Connect the hinges. Lay the legs on their sides next to each other so the hinge halves fit together. Hammer the pin back into the hole it came out of.

Tip: The hammer won’t fit down between the legs, so once the pin gets most of the way in, finish the job with the nail punch or turn a screw upside down and hammer the pointy end.

11. Attach the legs. Put the 2-by-4 that will be your horse’s back on your work surface and mark a line about three inches from each end. The legs will go inside that line. Grab some 3-inch screws and your drill driver and sink one into each side of the leg closest to you, fastening them diagonally into the wood. Repeat this for each set of legs.

Warning: Do not screw both legs into the horizontal board: One leg in each pair should be free-floating—only attached to the hinge.

Tip: If you’re working alone, simply let the legs rest against your chest or shoulder and hold them with your free hand while you put the screws in.

Bonus tip: It will be hard to drive the screws vertically down in a straight line right at the beginning. Get them started at a more horizontal angle, and once they’ve just bitten into the wood, straighten them out to continue on.

12. Cut the 1-by-3. Measure the length between the outside edge of the legs on each long side of your nearly finished saw horses. Then, cut the 1-by-3 boards to fit.

Tip: Again, if you’re alone or don’t have a miter saw, use a handsaw for this.

13. Attach the 1-by-3s. Lay a piece of 1-by-3 against the same-side legs of the saw horse, making sure it’s flush against the top and outermost edge of the legs it’s resting on. Use four 2-inch screws to fasten it to the legs (two on each leg). This will keep them sturdy and ensure they move in unison. Repeat this step for every set of legs.

14. Attach the chain. Mark a spot about eight inches up each leg where you will fasten your chain. Put a washer around a 2-inch screw and put it through one of the chain links. Once you fasten it in place, the washer will keep the chain from slipping over the screw. Fully open the legs and do the same on the other leg. If you haven’t cut the chain already, cut it now and repeat this step on each pair of legs.

Note: The chain doesn’t have to go eight inches off the ground. I chose that height because it’s high enough that I won’t trip on the chain and low enough that it should keep the legs from opening too much under heavy weight.

Done. Now you’ve got a solid pair of foldable saw horses that will allow you to quickly set up a real workspace in your yard or garage. Then, when you’re finished, you can stow them away just as quickly.

How To Track Your Own Period—Without An App

Menstruating is living in constant fear of ruining your best pair of underwear or making a spectacle of yourself the day you decide to wear white pants. And that’s only the least important reason to learn how to properly track your period. 

There are a lot of apps out there that promise to make your life easier in this regard, but you may not want to rely on them. Luckily, you can learn how to track your period without an app by using the good ol’ calendar method.

Why you should track your period

Theoretically, menstrual cycles are simple—they last 28 days, start on the first day of your period, and on day 14 you ovulate. 

Easy peasy, right? Think again. 

Menstrual cycles are highly susceptible to changes due to illness, lifestyle, and even stress levels. Add to that the fact that each body is different and the theoretical model goes out the window. 

Well, not entirely—the 28-day menstrual cycle is a good parameter to compare your own particular cycle to, and people have used it for decades to track their periods and detect any anomalies.

Research has found that what we understand as a healthy menstrual cycle varies depending on where in the world you are. In the US, a healthy cycle is anywhere between 21 and 35 days, has a period lasting usually between three and seven days, and happens monthly, with a margin of error of up to two days. Any drastic variation outside these parameters prompts a visit to the doctor, but since all bodies are different, some irregularities can be perfectly normal.   

How to manually track your period

The calendar method is more than just circling a day on your calendar and then circling another 28 days later. To fully understand not only how to track your period on paper but how you can make it work for you, you first need to understand how your cycle works. It may seem like a lot, but you’ll need to trust the process.

You can divide a menstrual cycle into two parts—the pre-ovulation stage or follicular phase, and the post-ovulation stage, or luteal phase. These two episodes are separated by ovulation, the main event in every cycle where the ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube.

In the follicular phase, the egg matures in a follicle within the ovary. Once it’s ready, estrogen levels signal to the brain that it’s time for the egg’s debut in society, and the noggin responds by releasing luteinizing hormone to trigger ovulation. The egg is now free to try and fulfill its purpose.   

The empty follicle that remains in the ovary turns into the progesterone-releasing corpus luteum. This tiny structure is key to understanding your specific menstrual cycle because it’s one of the only elements in this whole process that mostly remains constant for all menstruating people. If the egg doesn’t find a companion to join it in the dance of life, the corpus luteum will die after 12 to 14 days, abruptly cutting the supply of progesterone and triggering the shedding of the uterine lining, also known as your period. 

Now that you understand how the menstrual cycle works, it’s time to learn how to track your period without an app, so go ahead and write down the first day of your cycle—you can use a digital or analog calendar, your planner, or even a piece of paper. Keep in mind that the first day is when you start with full-flow bleeding—spotting doesn’t count. 

Starting on the first day of your period, go back 14 days on your calendar. That’s your ovulation day—mark it down. Knowing how long it takes your body to ovulate will help you determine when you’ll be at your most fertile, a crucial piece of information that, depending on how you use it, will help you get pregnant or avoid it altogether. 

Finally, jot down details about each day of your period.
