Suggested March 2024 How To Fix A Water Damaged Phone

The world suddenly freezes when you see your phone dunked in water. Whether it’s in a pool, the sea, or a toilet, you know nothing good will come out of the next few seconds. After all, that’s a high-tech device worth a significant amount of cash, and chances are it will be deemed unusable. Not to mention all your important files might be gone! You may want to learn how to fix a water-damaged phone.

Let’s start by saying trying to rescue a water-damaged phone is a bit of a coin flip. Nothing can guarantee a positive outcome, but it’s always worth trying. Our upcoming tips may give you a higher chance of success.

Please turn it off ASAP!

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

I know it’s hard to react quickly after such a devastating event, but you must snap out of it! The longer your device stays underwater, the lower its chances of survival are. You must dig in and take that phone out of the water immediately. Yes… even if it’s in the toilet!

Once the phone is out of the water, make sure it’s off and it stays that way. Even if it seems okay… it is important to shut it off just in case. Those who still have a removable battery should take it off. Turning off the device ensures that water doesn’t reach and damage important phone parts while electronics are active. Water reaching operating components is more likely to cause permanent damage.

Do not turn on the phone, as we already mentioned. Electrical components don’t play well with water when operating.

Don’t plug it in, either! For the same reason.

Don’t press any keys. This can push water further into the phone. It’s best to mess with the phone as little as possible.

Don’t shake or blow into the device. This may also push water into deeper areas of the phone. Especially try to avoid blow driers — not only because of the blowing part, but also because of the following point.

Do not apply any heat to the phone. Remember, excessive heat can also damage the phone.

Don’t move the phone around too much. Same deal; you don’t want the water moving around inside the phone.

Disassemble the water damaged phone

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Don’t mistake this step with “take the whole darn phone apart!” What we mean is that you should remove everything that is user-removable. If your back cover is removable, take it off. Similarly, try to remove the battery (if you can), SIM card, and SD card. Lay it all out on a paper towel. Most phones have no removable backs nowadays (but there are still some!), but do what you can.

Now, if you are an experienced tech specialist, know a phone’s ins and outs, and don’t mind voiding your warranty, you can go ahead and take the whole phone apart too. It might help with drying up every single piece faster. Just be careful. If you don’t know what you’re doing, this could cause more harm than good.

Time to dry out the water damaged phone

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

The hardest part is now, because it involves leaving the phone alone for some time. We know that simply waiting isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. If you have another phone or one you can borrow, make sure the SIM card is completely dry and stick it into the working handset. Otherwise, resort to smoke signals, public phones, and all that archaic stuff.

So how do you dry your phone out? You could leave the phone on the counter or inside a drawer, but some people like giving it a little help. The idea is to put it in an environment that will ease its drying process. Next to a window works great, as the moving air (if the window is open) and sunlight might help a bit. It could also help to put them next to a fan or air conditioning vent.

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Another common practice is putting the phone in a Ziploc bag full of rice and letting it rest for about two or three days. Why rice? Mainly because it is something readily available in most homes. Rice is dry, and hence very good at absorbing humidity in the air, making the phone’s environment drier and helping dry out the device.

With that said, if you can make your way to a store, there are better alternatives. Among better options are silica gel packs, which are those little packets you often find in shoes or electronics boxes (and you can’t eat). It’s not like we all have these lying around, but if you think ahead, you could get good deals on Amazon.

And while we are on the topic of thinking ahead, you could also buy a water rescue kit. I happen to like Kensington’s EVAP bundle, which includes a special bag and silica gel packs. Kensington states this is 700% more effective at drying moisture than rice is, though it’s hard to say how true its claim is. Still, it might be worth the investment.

The moment of truth

David Imel / Android Authority

So you did everything you could, and a few days passed. It’s time to see if all your efforts paid off. Take the phone out of wherever you left it and put it all together. Then plug the phone in and try to turn it on. If it works, you have succeeded! Stay on the lookout for any odd behavior, though, at least for a few days. Also, test all the components. Make a call to see if the microphone and earphone work, test the speaker, etc.

Now, if the phone doesn’t work, it’s time to accept defeat, take it to a professional, and see if it can be salvaged. You can also claim insurance if you have it. Not to sound like a doctor, but after this point, we have done everything we could. Sometimes you have to let the phone go.

FAQs

It’s not guaranteed, but putting your phone in rice gives it better chances of surviving a dunk in water. The idea is that rice is very dry, and can absorb moisture in the environment. If the air around your wet phone is dry, it will also absorb moisture from the phone.

Rice is nice to use because it’s usually available in any home. It’s not always the best solution, though. Silica packs are more efficient.

While it may sound like a good idea, blow drying a wet phone can often do more harm than good. This is because blowing air into electronics can push moisture further inside.

Phone warranties don’t commonly cover water damage. This is often the case even when a phone is said to be waterproof. Most phone insurances do cover water damage, though.

A Robotic Water Snake To Sniff Out Pollution

As it glides through the pool, its resemblance to an eel is eerie–an eel, perhaps, that someone borrowed from a backyard tool shed.

This is the amphiBot — a nearly meter-long black and yellow piece of plastic with the body of a machine and the moves of an animal. It’s a water-snake robot developed by a group of Swiss researchers at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The robot was originally developed to help biologists understand the neurobiology of snakes and amphibians.

But now the amphiBot is being taken apart and reborn as a slightly larger, significantly smarter snake, with a brand new task: tracking down pollution in freshwater lakes.

The new snake robot has been nicknamed the Envirobot. It’s still in the building stage, needing the sensors that will help it navigate and carry out its collection duties. Upon comit won’t just move like an eel, but will sample water, test it for contaminants, and send back the information to researchers via cellular or wireless networks. The researchers intend to release the Envirobot in Lake Geneva within the next few years.

The Envirobot is a big step up from the amphiBot, says Alessandro Crespi, a robotics engineer at the EFPL who is helping build the robot. For starters, it’s autonomous, so it doesn’t need a remote control to help it get from point A to point B.

Amphibot III

It also needs additional equipment like a GPS, external antenna, and other sensors to help the robot detect where it is in space. And then it can start tracking pollution.

“One of the big challenges of the project is managing to embed these [pollution sensors],” says Crespi. Normally, the lab equipment for measuring contamination is much larger than the approximately 15-centimeter long compartments that when chained together, make up the snake’s body.

The devices include traditional electrochemical sensors to detect heavy metals like lead and biosensors with living organisms like bacteria that are sensitive to pollution.

In addition to sending back information about its samples, the Envirobot will actually trace how pollution moves in the water to see where it came from. “We would like to follow the [chemicals] going toward the pollution and see where the maximum concentration is,” says Crespi, similar to the way a dog might sniff out a treat. Except the robot might find a fertilizer runoff or a chemical spill.

The Envirobot is 3D printed from epoxy resin. “Generally 3D-printed stuff is porous,” says Crespi, but not the epoxy resin; “This one is guaranteed to be waterproof.” He also says that 3D printing allows the team to print out shapes that are difficult, if not impossible to produce otherwise, like the concave case for batteries.

But why use a snake to track pollution? “Snakes are really, really excellent in [navigating] cluttered systems or anything sort of disorganized,” says biologist Henry Astley, a postdoctoral fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

And though Crespi has no scientific validation of this yet, he suspects, “that a lamprey-like robot will create less turbulence in water, which means if there are pollutants in water we will mix them less than with a traditional propeller.”

Of course, if you’re one of the 51 percent of people who are afraid of snakes (according to a 2001 Gallup poll), it’s probably not comforting to watch this video of an amphiBot easily outswimming its human competitor.

Crespi says not to worry: “The swimmer was not an Olympic champion–he was relatively slow. I think the robot couldn’t compete with a good swimmer.”

How To Root Essential Phone

After a really, really long wait, the TWRP recovery for the Essential Phone is now available. So if you were looking to root your Essential phone, this is now an easy job because all you need to do now is install magisk root package using TWRP.

Although, installing the TWRP recovery isn’t the easiest of processes by any means, but there is a convenient guide available from the developer himself that should guide you through the installation of TWRP recovery.

Of course, all of this fun begins with unlocking the bootloader of the device. Without that, you cannot install TWRP as fastboot mode remains locked by default.

Credit for the TWRP recovery for Essential phone goes to well-known developer Ethan Yonker, also known by XDA moniker  .

Essential Phone Root

Here’s an easy step-by-step guide to help you install TWRP recovery on your Essential Phone. You can use the TWRP recovery to easily gain root access on the device.

Make sure that you’ve unlocked the bootloader for the Essential Phone before proceeding. Take your time doing this.

Download the required files:

TWRP recovery: twrp-3.2.3.0-beryllium-20240831.img

Root package: Magisk v18.0

Lazyflasher: Link

Connect your Essential Phone to PC using the USB cable that came with it.

Transfer the TWRP ZIP, Lazyflasher, and Magisk file to your Essential Phone. Keep TWRP IMG file on the PC. And keep the Essential Phone connected to PC.

Make sure you have enabled USB Debugging on your Essential Phone, as explained in the bootloader unlock post above (step 1). You may need to re-do it after unlocking the bootloader.

Find the active partition of your device (it has two, A and B). For this, with the device connected to PC, run the following command: adb shell getprop ro.boot.slot_suffix

Notice the letter at the end of the result. It would be either of _a and _b. If it’s _a, then your active partition is A, and if it’s _b, then it’s B. Take note of it because we will need to change the active partition below and use the appropriate letter in the commands below.

Boot your Essential Phone into bootloader/fastboot mode. For this run this command: adb reboot bootloader

Change the active partition. If your device is using the A partition, then you need to set the B partition as active using the command below, and vice versa.

Set active partition from A to B: fastboot –set-active=_b

The command window will show you the test ‘setting current slot to …’. Which means changing the active partition was successful.

Install TWRP recovery on your device by running the command below. To run a command, simply type this in the command window and then hit the enter key.

Now, reboot the device into recovery mode to access TWRP by running the command below. fastboot reboot

Enter the password to let TWRP pass through the security and decrypt the phone.

You will see TWRP recovery now. When asked to ‘Keep System Read only?’, tap on the ‘Keep Read Only’ button to not allow for system modifications.

Change the active partition again from within TWRP. From TWRP’s home screen, tap on Reboot button, and then choose the originally active partition (that you got in step 7 above).

[Optional] Take backup. From the home screen, tap on backup, select the partitions and then confirm by swiping at the bottom of the phone’s screen.

Install TWRP recovery permanently. From the home screen, tap on the Install button, and then select the TWRP ZIP file and confirm it on the next screen.

Now that you have the TWRP recovery on both the partitions, you are good to go. You can root the Essential Phone now. For this, install the Magisk root package. Go back to the home screen of TWRP and tap on Install, select the ZIP file, and confirm on the next screen.

If you don’t want to root the device, then install the lazyflasher file in place of Magisk file above. You need to install either of the lazyflasher and Magisk to prevent the device from bootlooping.

That’s it

Difference Between Bottled Water And Tap Water

Is it necessary to buy bottled water, and how safe is tap water? Drinking either tap water or bottled water is a great idea, but the two have distinct differences.

What is Tap Water?

Tap water is drinking water that originates from an interior tap that is part of the plumbing system of a home. In order to ensure the water is safe to drink, a sophisticated pipe network, a reliable water supply, and water filtering are all required. Most first-world countries have access to potable water from the faucet, while those in the poor world rarely do.

Processing − There are a number of steps taken to refine the quality of the tap water we drink. First, coagulation is used to get rid of any grime or other debris. We add alum and other chemicals to make the debris sink to the bottom, where it can be easily removed. Water was filtered through layers of sand, gravel, and charcoal to eliminate any remaining debris.

In order to prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in an enclosed tank or reservoir, a very small quantity of chlorine is added to the water. The water is then delivered to residences through pipes.

Cost − The average cost of a gallon of municipal water is less than 1 cent, but a 20-ounce plastic water bottle might cost more than a dollar.

What is Bottled Water?

Bottled water is defined as drinking water that has been carbonated, distilled, de-ionized, or mineralized before being packaged in a plastic or glass container. Because most of the world’s water supplies have become contaminated in the last decade, their usage has skyrocketed.

Although some may argue that bottled water is safer than tap water, this is not always the case in industrialized nations. There, stricter standards are enforced for municipal water systems than for bottled water. In order to avoid contaminating customers, tap water must be treated to remove microorganisms like Escherichia coli.

Tap water is treated with beneficial minerals and fluoride, although certain bottled waters may include some of these substances. And whereas bottled water poisoning is often discovered at a

later date, any contamination of the public water supply is publicized immediately, making consumers apprehensive.

Processing − While some bottled water does originate from natural springs, most of them comes straight from the municipal system. The only permitted alteration to natural mineral water or spring water is the addition of carbon dioxide before bottling. However, some bottled water is sourced from non-natural environments, such as municipal supplies, and is treated with ultraviolet radiation to kill germs, filtration, and ion exchange to remove extra minerals. There is no residual disinfectant present.

Cost − Bottled water can be up to a thousand times more expensive than municipal water, depending on the state and the brand.

Environmental Impact

Water bottles are created from virgin petroleum, a fossil fuel, and the bottles are filled and distributed using fossil fuels. There are bottles that must be transported overseas. As reported by Food & Water Watch, manufacturing the plastic used in these bottles consumes upwards of 47 million gallons of oil annually. It’s estimated that bottled water accounts for up to 1.5 million tonnes of annual plastic trash, and yet only 20% of bottles get recycled, per the Container Recycling Institute.

Regulatory Bodies

The Environmental Protection Agency regulates tap water, while the FDA regulates bottled water. However, FDA regulations do not cover water packaged and sold within the same state, so 60 to 70% of bottled water, including water-cooler water, is fairly unregulated.

Health and Safety

Bottled water is subject to looser standards than municipal water. This indicates it may be contaminated with germs or chemicals, maybe including carcinogens, over acceptable levels. In 1999, the NRDC conducted research that revealed two brands were polluted with phthalates, one of which was found to violate EPA guidelines for tap water.

Some researchers have also pointed out that keeping water in plastic bottles at a high temperature might cause the bottles to break down and release plastic particles into the water

To prevent the spread of disease, a small quantity of chlorine is added to the water supply and subjected to daily inspections.

The Popularity of Bottled Water

A staggering 8 billion gallons of bottled water was used in the United States in 2006. Another research conducted in 2010 estimated that annual spending on bottled water was between $50 and $100 billion.

A large part of bottled water’s success can be attributed to the widespread belief that it tastes better than tap water. Some people may prefer tap water over bottled water, but in blind-tasting tests, most people cannot distinguish the difference.

How Much Does Screen Size Matter On A Phone?

The Problem

It would be very difficult to determine whether a large screen is really worth it, principally because it’s mostly a subjective opinion. Do you want a phone that closely resembles a tablet? Or would you like something that fits more comfortably on the palm of your hand? Is the iPhone 5s’ 4-inch screen sufficient?

One day, I walked into a phone shop to get myself a new SIM card. What I saw was a bunch of people using outlandishly large phones with 5 – 5.5-inch screens. I also saw a few others using phones with 4.5-inch screens like mine. If you have a glance at what phones people are using, you’ll soon realize that the consumer market is very diverse. This is generally a good thing. The question we really have to answer is, “Is everyone really happy with the phones they have?” This is nearly impossible, since it’s hard to gauge exactly how satisfied someone is with screen size. However, we can still look at the positive and negative sides of having either a medium 4-4.5-inch screen and a large 5-6-inch mammoth.

Putting Sizes Into The Arena

Everything is reachable with your thumb. In the upper end of the medium size spectrum, thumb operation might become difficult if you don’t have large hands. Overall, one-handed operation is possible.

The phone fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, extending up to the bottom-most section of each finger.

You’re less likely to drop a phone with this size of screen, since you can hold it relatively tightly in your hand.

But I must concede there are things that don’t play well with such sizes:

Gaming is slightly limited (think Angry Birds), since your gestures will surely be more sensitive on a smaller screen.

Typing vertically can be an exhausting process.

Having a smaller screen impedes your ability to read small text without having to pinch and zoom a billion times.

Added to that, large screens also give you otherworldly video recording and photography experiences. The larger screen will make you feel as if though you’re staring through a window at the subject you’re recording or snapping photos of. It’s really immersive.

So, Is Bigger Always Better?

Surely not! However, there are tons of great points that can be made about both smaller and larger screens. If you were to choose one, I’d say to prioritize what kind of user experience you want to get out of your screen.

What’s your choice? Do you like monolithic screens that bring you closer to having a tablet than a phone? Or do you like keeping your hardware lean for very quick one-handed use? Comment below with your answer!
