What is a “.bin” file?

Files with an extension of “.bin” can contain many data types. But usually, they are compressed files that contain binary data. Disc images, which store the contents of a disc, are often shared in the form of .bin files.

However, you cannot use such files unless you are sure about the data they contain and have the appropriate program or app installed. While some .bin files can contain uncompressed data, not every such File will necessarily be meant for reading/watching. Therefore most .bin files cannot be read using a simple text editor like Notepad.

The usage of such files has been decreased over the last few years. This is mainly due to the decreasing use of optical storage media such as CDs, DVDs, etc. The bin file format has been used a lot for DVD backup image files.

Key Takeaway :

Step 7)That’s it! Now your disc has the contents of the .bin file!

How do “.bin” files work/what is their structure?

These files serve as the input for many programs. The exact structure of a “.bin” file depends on underlying data. For example, if the File is meant to create a disc image, you will need to copy the disc contents, stored in a format appropriate for the target program. It is not necessary to use an ISO file for this. You can use a cue file as well.

Some backup programs also use this format. Sometimes the data is compressed, which makes the structure hard to understand. Even if the data is not compressed, the underlying content might be in different formats, such as images, music, etc.

When are you likely to come across “.bin” files?

Here are some most common uses of .bin files:

You will most likely encounter such files when dealing with historical data. If you have joined a new company, a previous employee might have stored data in the bin format.

Anti-virus software needs to be kept updated with the latest definition files. These are sometimes distributed in the bin format. Some people prefer letting the updates happen automatically. However, if you want to do it manually, you might regularly encounter “.bin” files.

You might even come across the bin file extension if you are working in the IT helpdesk of a company and users need help with opening such files.

Methods to open .bin Files

Here are various methods to open .bin files:

Step 1) Create a CUE File:

This method is used when you need to work with a disc image, and the program requires a “.cue” file as a supplement to the “.bin” file. The cue file and the bin file must be present in the same folder.

Step 2) Burning a File to Disc:

You use this method when you need to write the contents of the “.bin” file to a CD/DVD. This method is not very popular now because of decreasing use of optical storage media.

Step 3) Mounting the File to a Virtual Drive:

You are most likely to use this method when you want to access the disk image but do not want to write it to a physical CD/DVD. You can also use this method on systems that do not have an optical drive at all.

Transform the .bin File to ISO Format:

Sometimes the disc burning program that you have might only work with specific types of files, and “.bin” might not be one of them. Yet, you can use conversion software to convert the “.bin” file to the widely accepted ISO format. Most disc images are shared as an ISO file.

How to Open a “.bin” file in Windows?

You can use Alcohol 120%, a disc imaging software meant to run on Windows systems. It can be used to emulate a virtual optical drive as well.

Here is a step-by-step process for opening .bin files in Windows:

Note: You can use the trial version for 15 days.

Step 2) Run the downloaded installer program to install the software on your computer. Because the software also installs certain virtual device drivers, it might ask you to restart the PC, after which the remaining installation will continue.

Step 3) Start the program. From the main window, select “Image Burning Wizard.”

Step 4) after the wizard begins, select the “.bin” file that you want to open and continue to follow on-screen instructions.

That’s it! Now your disc has the contents of the “.bin” file!

How to open a “.bin” file in macOS?

You can use Roxio Toast, disc management, and burning programs for macOS. It is available in two versions, Titanium and Pro, with the latter being costlier.

Here is a step-by-step process for opening .bin files in macOS:

Step 2) here, we have selected the first plan.

Step 4) Configure output settings. This includes giving the project a name, specifying what you will use it for, and selecting the target drive. You can also specify any other settings like the number of copies.

Step 5) Start burning the image and wait for the process to complete.

You now have the contents of your “.bin” file accessible on your optical disc! As an alternative to Roxio Toast, you can also try AnyToISO. It has a “lite” version that is free.

How to Open a “.bin” file in iOS/Android?

In iOS, you can use the “Archives” app, which is capable of opening many kinds of compressed files, including the bin format. It is a very lightweight and free app and runs on many old versions of iOS as well.

Here is a step-by-step process for opening .bin files in iOS:

Download and install the app using the App Store link.

Step 2) Open the app. Depending on where you found the “.bin” File (such as from mail or transferred from your computer or obtained from Safari, etc.), select the appropriate option and follow the instructions provided.

In Android, you can use the MD.emu app, which is used to play emulated games that have been popular on retro consoles. Although the MD in the name refers to MegaDrive, it can be used to emulate other systems as well.

Here is a step-by-step process for opening .bin files in Android:

Step 2) once the app is installed, open the app. The app is mainly designed to emulate old game consoles, so most likely, you will be using this app to play old games, whose files are often distributed in the “.bin” format.

Step 3) Choose “Open Content” and select the “.bin” file which you wish to open. Depending on how fast your Android device is, the emulation might feel a bit slow.

Now you can enjoy your game on Android!

Note that sometimes apk files get downloaded as bin files on Android systems. The solution is to rename the bin file as an apk file.

Different types of data that can be stored in a “.bin” file

Here are various types of data that a bin file can store:

Binary data

Sega game ROM

Binary executable File

Unix/Linux executable file. These are also popular for running scripts.

Disc image. You will need a cue file as well.

Macbinary encoded File

Emulator BIOS image

BlackBerry IT policy file

Emulator binary file

Router firmware

Video. Although not very popular, the bin file format can contain video too. These are huge files because they usually contain raw, uncompressed video streams.

Atari game ROM

Nintendo Wii game data. In this case, some data is present in plain text, whereas the rest is encrypted.

FAQs

Since some files having the bin extension can contain executable code, they can put your system at risk if the source of the File is not trustworthy. It is always better to have anti-malware software activated and updated on your system when you open a bin file.

Depending on your file manager settings, you might not see such files listed in directory contents. On Windows, it is possible to hide “.bin” files by setting the “Hidden” attribute of the File.

The choice of tool that you use to open such files depends on what is the expected data contained. Usually, disk imaging/burning software is associated with “.bin” files. Game ROM files needed by old console emulators are also popular in the bin format.

Most email clients, as well as service providers, allow the use of the bin file extension as email attachments. Since the data present in such files are of a varied nature and can even be present in a compressed state, such files are not usually blocked.

You can use the “file” utility found in macOS and Unix/Linux systems to detect the type of data that a file contains. It is possible to download and use this utility on Windows systems also.

Sometimes, anti-malware software detects false positives and unnecessarily quarantines “.bin” files, blocking your access. Yet, you can usually open these files safely using a Linux live distribution, especially if you want to access the File in a read-only state.

How To Open A Crdownload File On Windows 11/10

Most of you might have seen CRDOWNLOAD files while downloading video, music files, document files, etc. They are temp files created by Chrome when you download a file. In fact, they are created by all Chromium-based browsers.

When the browser starts downloading a file, it first tags .crdownload file extension to the filename and removes it once the download is completed.  This article discusses how crdownload files are different from other files and how to open it on your browser.

What is a CRDOWNLOAD file?

Crdownload file is a partial or incomplete file commonly known as Chrome partial download files. They are temporary files created during the download process, and they can be used as a regular file once the download is complete. In simple words, Chrome creates crdownload files during the download process and removes the attached crdownload file extension when the download is finished.

Crdownload means “Chromium download”. This file extension is specific to Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome – and even Microsoft Edge Chromium now.

Related: Download is in progress says Chrome; But nothing is downloading.

How to open CRDOWNLOAD files?

Crdownload files are partial download files and they are of no use until your browser finishes the downloading process. To fully use these files, you need to resume the download process and delete the ones that are useless.

To open a Crdownload file:

Launch your browser and go to the download page.

Locate the files that have paused downloading.

Resume the downloading process or start the fresh download again.

If all the files you download are paused and have the crdownload file extension, it could mean there is an issue with your Chrome.

In such a case, make sure that your internet connection is good and update your browser to the latest version.

You cannot see a crdownload while downloading a file in the browser. However, you can view them in the folder where you are saving the file. As mentioned earlier, crdownload files are incomplete files. If you see files with .crdownload extensions, it only means that Chrome is either still downloading the file or it suggests the download has been interrupted.

If the download has stopped, it is possible to use a part of the file by removing the crdownload extension from the file name.

For example, if there is an incomplete file named audiofile.mp3.crdownload, you can use a part of the sound file by removing .crdownload extension and renaming it as audiofile.mp3. You can now open and use the file in an mp3 player, although the download is still incomplete. Similarly, if you are downloading an AVI file,  you can use a part of the sound file by removing .crdownload extension. You can then open and use the file to play video in a VLC  player as long as your browser continues to download the file.

You can open and use crdownload files of audio and video only in the programs for which you are downloading. You cannot use documents, archives, images, etc in the crdownload extension. It is worth noting that you cannot convert a crdownload file to other formats like Avi, mp4, or pdf as they are incomplete files.

That’s all.

How To Automatically Empty Recycle Bin In Windows 10 Using Auto Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin has been around in Windows for quite some time now. It is a very convenient feature that has made its special place inside the operating system. But at the same time, the Recycle Bin also takes up a lot of disk space on your computer as the files that you delete are not removed from your computer. And once you are running out of disk space, there is no option other than emptying the Recycle Bin. Auto Recycle Bin as the name suggests automates the task of emptying Recycle Bin to save time and effort.

Automatically empty Recycle Bin in Windows 10

We have earlier seen how you can automatically delete files from the Recycle Bin via Storage Sense.

Today we will take a look at this freeware called Auto Recycle Bin, which offers more options!

Auto Recycle Bin for Windows PC

Selecting the files you need from your Recycle Bin is a tedious task and this what program aims to simplify. The program Auto Recycle Bin lets you configure various rules that make sure the data is automatically cleared from different parts of the Recycle Bin, and you never run out of disk space.

This is a very tiny tool with a simple to use UI. This is not a replacement for any other tool; it just makes sure that the Recycle Bin is cleared periodically.

Just below that, you can configure the number of days the deleted items should be kept inside Recycle Bin. The next setting that you configure is the size of the Recycle Bin. You can specify a number in MBs or a percentage value with respect to the size of the drive.

Moving on, Auto Recycle Bin also lets you view the items in the Recycle Bin in the order they were deleted. You can select the items you want to delete and use the Delete selected items options to clear them off your computer’s Recycle Bin. Also, there is a dedicated Process all button to delete everything from Recycle Bin for that drive.

Similarly, you can configure these settings for other drives and view their respective Recycle Bins. Since the program tries to automatically clear off the contents of your computer’s Recycle Bin, there must be a policy guiding this as well.

If you go to the program’s settings, you can decide when the files are deleted. There are two options currently provided; the first one is the manual mode. In manual mode, the program will not delete files automatically. You will have to open the tool and hit the Process button manually.

And the second option is On the Windows OS startup. Auto Recycle Bin will automatically delete files from Recycle Bin on startup and then exit the program. The second one is more convenient and serves the purpose of this tool.

Auto Recycle Bin is a great little tool to have if you happen to delete a lot of files. There is no point in keeping the files inside Recycle Bin if you are not going to need them. But if you are not sure about the files that you have deleted, then we do not recommend using this tool as it might automatically empty the recycle bin at a pre-configured time.

How To Create File Backup On Windows 10 Using Azure

On Windows 10, you can use many tools and services to backup your data off your computer, but if you’re a content creator or you have important data that you want to protect long-term, then you should consider using Azure backup services.

Azure is a paid cloud service from Microsoft, and among a slew of services aimed for organizations, it also offers backup and restore services that anyone can use to reliably protect data offsite whether you’re using Windows Server or Windows 10.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to successfully set up and create an offsite backup using the Azure Backup service on Windows 10.

How to create a Recovery Service Vault on Azure

The process to create an offsite backup is a four-step process, which starts with the creation of a Recovery Service Vault, which is a required step as it defines the container that will store your data.

To create a new Recovery Service Vault on Azure, use these steps:

Type a descriptive name for your vault. For example, MyVault.

Select the subscription (if you have more than one subscription).

Select the Resource group option.

Select the location where to store the backup. (It’s always recommended to select the closest to your location.)

Once you’ve completed the steps, the Recovery Service Vault will be created, and you can proceed to set up a new backup service.

How to set up a backup service on Azure

To configure a backup using Microsoft Azure services, use these steps:

Open the Azure portal on your web browser.

Using the “Where is your workload running?” drop-down menu, select the On-Premises option.

Using the “What do you want to backup?” drop-down menu, select the Files and folders option.

After completing the steps, the backup service will be created, and you can proceed to download, install, and configure the agent on your local computer to backup your data offsite.

How to install Azure Backup Agent on Windows 10

To install the Azure Backup Agent and register your device in the cloud service, use these steps:

Check the Already downloaded or using the latest Recovery Service Agent option.

Select the Use Microsoft Update when I check for updates option.

Open the registration file that you downloaded on step No. 3.

Select a location to save the file that will include your generated passphrase.

Warning: If you lose this file, you won’t be able to recover your data and Microsoft won’t be able to help. It’s recommended to save this file in an external location.

Once you’ve completed the steps, your computer will register with Azure, and then you can proceed to configure your first backup job.

How to set up a file backup to Azure on Windows 10

To create a file backup from your Windows 10 device to Azure, use these steps:

Open Start.

Select the Schedule Backup option.

Select the files and folder that you want to store in the cloud.

Quick Tip: If you’re selecting a folder with content that you don’t wish to backup, you can use the Exclusion Settings button to remove the items.

Select the schedule for the backup. (You can select the Day for daily backups, or you can use the Week option to select which days of the week the file backup should run.)

Select the times when the backup should run.

Select the retention policy for daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly recovery points. (If you’re not sure about this configuration, use the default settings, just bear in mind that the more copies you keep the more resources will be used.)

Select the Automatically over the network option. (The “Offline Backup” option is a good option if you have a large amount of data and you want to speed up the backup process by making a copy locally and then send it to Azure.)

Once you’ve completed the steps, the files and folders you selected will backup to the Azure servers on the schedule specified automatically. If you ever run into an issue, you can use these instructions to restore one or multiple files from an existing Azure backup on Windows 10.

If the first backup won’t startup until a later day, it’s recommended to trigger the first backup manually using the Back Up Now button from the Actions menu in the Microsoft Azure Backup console. This will not only test that everything is working, but it’ll ensure that your data is backed up as soon as possible.

To use Microsoft Azure services, you’ll need a subscription, but if you don’t want to commit, there’s a pay-as-go option and you only get charged for the resources you use with no termination fees or up-front cost.

Also, if you’re a Microsoft MVP, remember that you get free credits to use Azure services, including for backup and restore devices and data.

While we’re focusing this guide on Windows 10, you can use the same steps on Windows Server 2024, 2012, and even 2008.

How To Open Multiple Windows Of The Same App On Ipad

Learn how to open multiple windows of the same app on iPad and increase your productivity with this step-by-step guide.

Some iPad apps allow you to open multiple instances of the same app simultaneously, which is useful in various scenarios such as having multiple maps open in Maps, several views in Calendar, or even separate windows in Safari (in case you prefer not to use tabs).

Open multiple windows of the same app on iPad

1) Open the app that you want to have more than one window of and keep it on the screen. We’re going to use the Calendar app for our example.

2) With the app open on your screen, swipe up subtly from the bottom to invoke the Dock. If you swipe at full force, you could minimize your app, so use a light touch.

3) Tap the same app’s icon in the Dock. Calendar in our case.

4) Tap New Window.

That app will open a new window. You can repeat the above steps to open subsequent windows of the same app. Or, use that action to quickly switch between those windows, which you can also do in the App Switcher.

Another method

1) Open the app on your iPad.

2) You can go out of the app to the Home Screen, Dock, or App Library to see this app’s icon or follow the steps in the above heading to bring up the Dock with the app in the background.

3) Touch and hold that app’s icon and choose Show All Windows.

4) Tap the plus icon (+) from the top left corner of the screen to open a new window of that app.

See all open app windows

There are three different ways to do that.

Method 1: Follow steps 1 to 3 of the first section, and you will see the thumbnails for all open windows. Tap one to jump in.

Method 2: Touch and hold the app icon in the Dock, Home Screen, or App Library and choose Show All Windows. You will see all the open windows of this app.

Method 3: Finally, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to enter App Switcher, which will show tiles for all open apps and app windows.

Close an app window

Simply enter App Switcher to see all windows of the app and swipe up on one of the window tiles to close it. Doing this will only close that window and not that app or its other open windows.

Reopen closed window

You can reopen recently closed windows of an app as long as you have at least one open window of that app. In other words, you can reopen closed windows if you have not entirely quit the app.

1) Touch and hold the app icon from the Dock, Home Screen, or App Library, and tap Show All Windows.

2) Tap Reopen Closed Window from the top left corner of the screen.

Not all iPad apps support opening multiple windows

Not every iPadOS app supports Split View or Slide Over, and similarly, not all built-in or third-party apps allow you to open multiple windows. When you follow the above steps and tap the app icon in the Dock and instead of showing the New Window option, if the entire app’s current screen shakes, that means this app does not support the multi-window feature.

You can contact the app developer and request them to add this feature or look for an alternative.

Having more than one app open at a time is great, but having more than one window for the same app open at a time is even better. You can up your productivity a notch with this handy iPadOS feature.

Winamp is, arguably, the most famous third-party music player since the Windows era started.

It was a reliable choice for so many years and now it’s in a decline, as the music streaming services are taking over.

Even its optimization for Windows 10 is not without issues and some users report not being able to open Winamp or play any audio files.

We have some suggestions on how to solve this problem, so make sure to give them a go.

What can I do if Winamp won’t play audio files? 1. Scan for malware and PuPs

The corruption of Winamp might occur due to a malware infection. Albeit, this is hardly the case. However, just for the sake of troubleshooting this problem, run the deep scan on your antimalware tool.

In addition, if you’re suspecting the presence of some PuPs which might interfere with Winamp, the antimalware solution suited for your PC should remove them in no time.

A malware removal tool offers real-time protection against all types of device viruses, such as spyware, malware, ransomware, etc.

3. Check the format and state of multimedia files

This suggestion is a long shot, but you should check the state of files before we move to additional steps. If you have any alternative player (even the built-in Windows Media Player will do), make sure to try opening the files.

If you’re able to play audio files on an alternative player and Winamp is still crashing, move to the next step on the list.

Here’s the list of file formats Winamp supports by default:

MP3

WMA

RealAudio

Vorbis

Musepack

AAC

AC-3

APE

FLAC

ALAC
