Working from home during lockdown certainly has its benefits, but improved mental health is generally not considered to be one of them! When you work and relax in the same environment, days begin to bleed into one another. Social contact starts to become a distant memory, and the urge to spend all day in your PJs is strong.

This is not only bad for your health, but also productivity.

This is exaggerated during lockdown seeing as you also now lack the option to go out in the evening!

Fortunately, as someone who has been working from home for the past 10 years, I’ve developed some tricks to find balance. Hopefully, these can help you learn how to work from home during lockdown and how to generally survive being stuck at home for most of the day. Every day. 

Get social contact elsewhere

I’m something of an introvert, which has led me to enjoy working from home all this time. But even I quickly learned that I needed some social stimulus if I was going to figure out how to work from home and stay… well, normal.

The solution for me was to meet with friends and family during lunch breaks. As I was free to travel while working, I’d work in a coffee shop near one of those friends, and then we’d get lunch when they were on their break.

I needed some social stimulus if I was going to figure out how to work from home and stay… well, normal.

That’s not going to happen during lockdown, but you can call your friends and relatives. That small bit of social contact is better than nothing, and what better time to do it?

Likewise, you can and should take the time to meet friends online for get-togethers. Playing a few rounds of Drawful 2 over Skype with glass of wine is nearly as good as actually having a board game evening with those friends at your place.

This little bit of stimulation will make sitting in front of a computer all day seem a lot less repetitious, and will help you to stay focused. If you want to know how to work from home, you need to know how to unwind first.

Take time off

This might seem like a strange time to take a vacation, but it can actually be a very useful option for keeping you and your family sane during lockdown. A staycation could provide you with the perfect time to work on home projects, to spend time with family, or just to relax.

If you’re struggling working from home, then this will reduce the amount of time you need to spend doing that, while also breaking up those long stretches of monotony.

And if your family is struggling with the lockdown, then they will benefit from having you around. You may well find that your partner could use some help looking after the kids, or that your housemate who isn’t able to work from home could use a little distraction!

Make plans

One of the things that bites most about lockdown in general, is having to cancel all of your plans. Holidays, weekend breaks, and time visiting friends are now all things of the past. Again, this impacts on your ability to work from home as you lose that “light at the end of the tunnel” to work toward.

Thus it falls to us to be more creative when it comes to plans. This is also another great way to we can keep our loved ones sane.

Some examples of “things to look forward to” that you can plan around the home, include:

Board game nights

Meals outside by candlelight

Themed meals

Sleeping in a tent in the garden

Movie nights

Long (socially distant) walks

Get out your diary and book in some fun days to try new things, get moving, and spend time with your family.

This may mean gaining additional skills by taking a course, or it might mean working on some kind of side project. A side project can provide you with a focus and a sense of progression when everything else seems to have ground to a halt. As an example, I’m currently working on a book with a publisher. This is extremely rewarding and helps me to feel like I’m making meaningful progress, despite being trapped in the house.


Chances are you’ve heard just how bad sitting for long periods can be for you: your heart weakens from lack of exercise, your shoulders round, your hip flexors become tight, and your general mobility and energy levels plummet.

I mentioned earlier that I used to work in coffee shops near my friends’ offices so that we could hang out at lunch. This not only kept me social, but also ensured that I wasn’t constantly stuck in the same four walls.

This option may no longer be available to you at home during lockdown. But that’s not to say you can’t move around a bit! While you might predominantly work from your desk, there is nothing to stop you from taking your laptop to a sofa when answering emails. You can even do a little work outdoors!

In order to find balance, you need to ensure that you are working set hours, but also getting time off to relax and unwind. That means you can’t spend half your day procrastinating, and it means you mustn’t end up working into the small hours of the morning.

This is a skill in itself, but one that can be learned. Over time, you will find it easier and easier to focus on work when you’re working from home.

We all want our internet to be super fast while working from home, but we sometimes face several difficulties.

For instance, we get stuck in the middle of a task (uploading, editing, etc.), which forces us to pile up our work.

Reasons Why your Internet Speed is Slow

There are several reasons why your Internet connection might be slow.

1. Reboot your Internet Connection

Initially, you must be aware of rebooting your router by yourself. Next, check your wifi speed; if it is still not operating, move the antennas.

Again, try to move the router near your working space if your internet gets slow. Then, repeat the first step, i.e., restarting the router.

Likewise, your modem might also be the reason behind your slow internet. So, reset it as well.

Steps to Reboot the Router

Remove the router and modem from the network. Unplug any other managed network devices, such as network switches.

Allow at least 30 seconds to pass. This allows the equipment to cool down while signaling that the router and modem are unavailable to your ISP, PCs, and other devices.

Plug-in the modem. Press the Power button if it does not turn on after a few seconds.

Allow at least 60 seconds to pass. The modem authenticates with your ISP and is now issued a public IP address.

Connect the router. You may need to push the Power button on some routers.

Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding. It also allows the router to start up and allows laptops, cellphones, and other networked devices time to receive new private IP addresses via its DHCP service.

Your internet service provider (ISP) may give speed test choices, and you may also utilize diagnostic platforms such as Ookla, Google, and others.

So, use the available sites to check your internet speed frequently.

Only then, call your particular internet service provider and take a profound lesson about your slow internet.

4. Adjust your Router Position

Most of us keep our router in tight space. But, this technique does not help boost our internet speed.

Moving the router can significantly impact the speeds you obtain and the range of your wireless broadcasts.

To overcome it, we can switch on to another DNS server.

For example, regular online browsing will be slower if you download things with BitTorrent.

File-syncing services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive may be uploading files in the background, using bandwidth, and slowing down your internet connection.

So, try to minimize heavy and more programs while working.

9. Scan the Viruses and Malware

We browse many apps and websites in a single day. However, our computer might be infected due to viruses in that process.

The viruses on our computing system also impact our internet system.

In a sense, if a computer’s performance decreases due to the malware, then we also cannot surf the internet at a higher speed.

Therefore, scan the viruses on your computer more habitually.

Set your antivirus software to scan for viruses and malware once installed regularly.

If the program detects existing viruses or malware (which may cause your poor internet connections), get it removed by a computer professional.

10. Get a Wifi Extender

Signal deterioration is common when multiple wifi-compatible devices are connected to a single router. A wireless extender can help in this situation.

It can assist in strengthening wireless signals by receiving signals from routers and dispersing them appropriately among various devices.

Extenders rebroadcast your existing wifi signals with a new, stronger signal.

The wifi range extender helps your internet reach almost every place of your home.

These gadgets connect to your router’s wireless internet and then extend it by plugging into an empty electrical outlet.

They’re (usually) straightforward to set up and use, and they may eliminate wifi dead zones in your home.

The extended or repeated wireless signals will be weaker than the ones coming directly from your network; thus, location is crucial once again.

The following method is to set up a wifi range extender. These objects are small in size.

11. Purchase a New Router with the Greater Strength

If your router isn’t up to speed, even the fastest internet connection in the world won’t help your wireless devices.

If you find your internet speed lagging even after you have repeatedly restarted your router, it is best to purchase a new one.

Moreover, changing the router after a year will help you work with excellent internet speed.

Get a new wifi router that supports 802.11ac (also known as wifi 5) or at the very least 802.11n (also known as wifi 4) to solve this issue.

If you want a speedy wifi router, you may choose one that meets the newest 802.11ax specifications (known as wifi 6).

Most places only have a few Internet Service Providers (ISPs), so it should be a straightforward check to see if the other provider that covers your area offers cheaper costs for higher speeds.

1. Schedule your Internet Usage for Heavy Work

Only a few people live alone, where they can surf the internet as much as they want with more incredible speed.

But, people living with their family and children might experience slow internet.

And to save own self from the specified problem, you can set a routine to use the internet for your work.

For instance, schedule the internet time for your children during the day; so that you can work other times with great speed.

During working hours, it’s critical to know what else is using your home wifi network.

You may also change the automatic update installation time to fit the hours you choose manually.

2. Consider Working Close to your Router

Even a ten-minute delay in a call can improve quality and reduce the chance of a disconnect.

If feasible, schedule introductory video calls during off-peak hours (especially if your business already works between time zones).

In many circumstances, it will be faster before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

4. If Possible, Work Offline

Well, it might sound unconvincing but try doing your task offline. Yes, I know that you need to browse several websites to do a job.

And while doing so, those sites can eat more bandwidth than required.

You should seek offline productivity choices if you have a slow internet connection.

This implies that instead of working directly in Google Docs and Sheets, you might work on Microsoft Word and Excel projects.

Offline mode in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive is another alternative.

This allows you to open and modify certain documents even if your network is down or inconsistent.

You can download the needed files or information beforehand to eliminate such problems.

Then, you can continue your work by turning off your wifi; this idea might not be helpful for people like programer and other computer geeks.

5. Disconnect Wifi in Unused Devices

It might not be easy to keep track of dozens of devices all trying to connect to the same wifi simultaneously.

As additional devices are added to your network, you risk draining your allotted bandwidth and overloading your internet equipment.

Another hack to make your internet faster is by restarting your computer. Yes, you heard it right!

Our computer’s processing system often becomes slow due to regular use. And, directly, this causes our internet to be slower than usual.

For that reason, I recommend you reboot your computer to have access to the higher speed of the internet.

Type of  Internet Speed you Need to Consider when WFH

The internet speed is called slow when it falls into the range of Kbps. Likewise, the internet speed with the range of Mbps is fast.

Respectively, the internet that ranges to Gbps is considered super-fast.

Similarly, it would be best to consider 25 Mbps or above the internet speed.

And the speed between 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps is the best for downloading. Likewise, you need 10 Mbps of internet speed to upload files and videos.

With this range, you can do your work with no disturbances.

Also, your relatives and family members can enjoy their leisure time by streaming videos and playing games simultaneously.

If you do not know the required Mbps for performing tasks, you will never know the exact reason behind your late work and slow internet.

Zoom has been the primary medium for many organizations to communicate with their employees.

But, due to network traffic and other reasons, both the employers and employees cannot properly talk to each other.

Therefore, I have included the ways to video call on Zoom with slow internet below;

First, do not use a webcam when not needed.

In the same way, unmute your mic only when you want to or are asked to talk.

Then, disable HD video.

Baker says the “take the outfit from day to night” concept really doesn’t work, because workwear and streetwear fulfill many different purposes. This is especially true if you are working from home permanently. The key to solving this problem is choosing outfits you can easily transform with a few changes. 

To make things easier, Baker suggests separating our loungewear from our workwear in our closets so we aren’t confused or tempted to go for cozy over more work-appropriate clothing choices—whatever that may be for you.

Use clothes to signify the work day’s start and end

One of the biggest conundrums of the work-from-home era is the blurred lines that separate work from personal life—if you work where you live, how do you know when to stop working? Well, clothes might be able to help.

Creating a routine to start and end your day with a clear beginning and ending time helps create separation between your work and home life, even if you never physically leave. Baker recommends going for comfortable pull-on work trousers that feel like casual pants but look more put together than sweats—they should have structure and the comfort of a fitted jogger. Pay attention to your neckline

We’ve been staring at our own faces, necks, and shoulders for two long years now. Luckily, we’ve learned a lot from it, and Baker says we now have more specific tips for what looks best on video calls. These can help guide the move from snuggies toward a more definitive work-from-home closet.

For men, she recommends wearing a shirt and tie, but not every day. For women, she says V-neck or scoop neck style shirts look best on virtual calls. She says a crew neck isn’t the most flattering and can make you look like “a blob of clothing.”

Is Working From Home Damaging Your Eyes?

From Netflix binges to Zoom meetings, the coronavirus pandemic significantly increased the amount of screen time in our daily lives. All that time on devices can be taxing on the eyes—so if you’ve experienced more headaches, eye fatigue, or blurred vision, since remote work began, you’re not alone. These are symptoms of digital eye strain, also known as “computer vision syndrome” (yes, a real medical term, according to The American Optometric Association). 

Here’s the good news first: Despite its name, eye strain isn’t a physical injury and doesn’t carry any risk of long term damage to the eyes. Still, it’s no fun, and can make life difficult in the digital age. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to prevent, or recover from, these symptoms.

What causes digital eye strain?

When we’re not looking at screens, humans blink about once every four, says Priyanka Kumar, an ophthalmologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Each blink squeezes out a layer of fresh tears, a mixture of oil, water, and mucus that lubricates and protects the eye. When we use screens, we blink about half that much, Kumar says. This can cause our eyes to feel dry or gritty. They might even sting, burn, or tear up. These tears are different from the ones our eyes would normally produce when blinking—they’re made when our brain realizes our eyes are too dry and because they’re mostly water, they tend to evaporate quickly. “Tearing is actually a nudge that the eyes are dry,” Kumar says. 

The headaches and blurred vision sometimes associated with digital eye strain have a different root cause. Spending hours on screens can cause the muscles that coordinate our eyes to tire from the constant motion of focusing our sight on the same distance for a long period of time. “It’s like running marathons all day long,” says Katherine Weise, a professor at the University of Alabama school of Optometry. Enough screen time can cause anyone to develop this particular set of symptoms, but people who have an underlying issue with eye coordination are especially vulnerable, Weise says. So if headaches and blurred vision are your problem, if you find it easier to focus on your screen when you cover one eye, it’s probably a good idea to get your eyes checked out, in case you do have an underlying problem with eye coordination, Weise says.

When screen time causes harm

For adults, eye strain can be painful and inconvenient, but it doesn’t cause actual damage to the eye. For children younger than eight-years old, though, it’s a different story, Kumar says. That’s because their eye muscles haven’t fully developed. There’s some evidence to suggest that lots of screen time can contribute to nearsightedness—when far-away objects appear blurrier than they should. Some studies suggest that nearsightedness has become more common in children during the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to all that time spent learning virtually. One study, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, found that the increase was as much as three-fold. Usually, this condition is treatable with a prescription for glasses or contact lenses. But in extreme cases, nearsightedness can lead to retinal detachment, an injury that often results in blindness. 

Preventing eye strain

Luckily, protecting the eyes from screen time isn’t hard and can seamlessly fit into your daily routine. The most important step is to take breaks, Kumar says. She encourages the 20-20-20-2 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds, and try to spend two hours of the day outside. (When we’re outdoors, our eyes tend to focus on objects far away, a welcome break from focusing on what’s right in front of our face.) “Set a timer, or a goal for how much work you will get done before you take a break,” Kumar says. 

Placing your monitor in the proper location is also key. Set up your screen roughly two feet from your eyes and a few inches above where your sight naturally rests without tilting your head, Kumar says. Any closer, and your eyes will work harder than they need to.

If you’re experiencing dryness or burning, artificial tears might help, Kumar says. And if you use contact lenses, try switching to glasses, at least while you’re working—contact lenses can actually exacerbate dry-eye. 

Finally, avoid glare, Weise says. Rather than shining in a clear path straight to the center of our retina, glare pinballs around our eye, making it difficult for our eyes to focus. That overworks the muscles inside our eye, such as those that dilate the pupils. Give your eyes a break from glare by making sure that your ambient light is similar to the light coming from your screen—limit the work you do outside and switch off bright overhead lights, but also avoid working in low-light conditions. Glasses with anti-reflective coating can also help limit your exposure to glare, Weise adds.

Once you’ve begun implementing these strategies, don’t expect instant relief. If you’re already feeling the effects of eyestrain, it could take some time to feel back to normal, says Scott Drexler, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh University of Medicine. Fortunately, you don’t need to take a complete hiatus from screen time. Recovery from eye strain looks similar to prevention. You should start to feel better in a few days.

Are blue light filtering lenses worth the investment?

Much has been made about the negative effects of blue light. Some optometrists and opticians (licensed professionals who fit, sell, and prescribe lenses, but aren’t medical doctors) claim that blue light damages the retina, which can lead to long-term vision problems. For an additional cost of around $50 to $100, you can purchase a pair of blue-light filtering lenses. These claims are based on a few studies which found that direct exposure to blue light from screens damaged the retinas of rats and human cells cultivated in a lab. But the American Academy of Ophthalmology doesn’t recommend the use of blue-light filtering lenses, citing insufficient evidence. Rat studies and lab conditions just aren’t generalizable to people. 

Without a doubt, some blue light is damaging. Take, for instance, the ultraviolet rays from the sun, which can cause macular degeneration and cancer. But not all blue light is equally harmful. Our devices don’t produce ultraviolet light, and the total amount of blue light they do expose us to is actually fairly minimal—about a one-thousandth of the amount of ambient blue light on an overcast day, Weise says. If you’re concerned about your long-term eye health, a high-quality pair of UVA/UVB-filtering sunglasses to wear when you spend long periods of time in the sun, is a much better investment than blue-light filtering lenses for computer work, she adds. 

The take-away message is simple: Adults don’t need to worry about the long-term effects of screen time on their eyes—but suffering through headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision isn’t necessary either. Why not start now? Now is probably a good time to give your eyes a break.
