Apple loves augmented reality. Tim Cook says we won’t be able to imagine our lives without it. New products are designed with hardware specifically tuned for AR experiences. A suite of tools unveiled this year at WWDC was built to make creating ARKit apps easier than ever.

Considering the enthusiasm, it’s surprising that Apple’s online and physical retail store environments have largely stood clear of AR to date. How might Apple augment its shopping experience? Is the current technology appropriate for a retail setting?

When discussing the Apple Store experience, it’s important to differentiate between the online store website (including the Apple Store app) and brick and mortar retail locations. Augmented reality is a natural fit for online shopping, where interactive 3D models can bring products into your home before you buy them. Apple already highlights several apps with similar functionality on its AR website.

Since the very first Apple Watch, Apple has offered a tool in the Apple Store app to demonstrate the actual size of each watch model. While the feature is far less immersive than a modern AR demo, it illustrates Apple’s long interest in creating a richer shopping experience. More recently, webpages for the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR are the first to include full 3D product models you can place in the real world. The feature became an instant hit with enthusiasts online. Unfortunately, these models are unavailable inside the Apple Store app.

The road ahead is rockier when discussing brick and mortar retail stores. Several retailers have already experimented with bringing AR to the in-store experience with virtual showrooms and 3D wayfinding for store navigation. In public environments, the use of AR should be carefully considered to avoid becoming a cheap novelty. Augmented reality is only useful when it lives up to its name and truly augments the world around you.

At Apple Stores, every product Apple makes is available for hands-on exploration. There’s no need for a virtual Apple Watch try-on experience when you can pick up the actual watch. In a similar way, AR wayfinding is largely redundant with a skilled team staffing each store. Virtual guidance might free up busy employees, but it weakens the human element for which Apple Stores are known.

In-store augmented reality must be entirely optional for customers, at least for now. Apple can’t assume that everybody walking in will have an iPhone, let alone one capable of the latest software features. Discovering an AR experience is also a major hurdle. The Apple Store app has long offered a quick and easy way to buy accessories right from store shelves, but many customers are still unaware the feature exists.

Truly useful applications of augmented reality will need to provide customers with an experience that is simply impossible through any other means. For a great example, look no further than Apple Park Visitor Center’s Exhibition. The massive aluminum model of Apple Park acts as a canvas for visitors to peer into a space normally inaccessible to the public and learn more about its design.

This year at WWDC, Apple brought the same concept to a scale fit for retail with an AR demo of the new Mac Pro. The computer’s empty space frame became the anchor for an exploded view of the Mac’s inner workings.

This kind of demo would be perfect to roll out to stores across the world for a better look inside Apple’s most powerful Mac and an impressive introduction to ARKit. It’s not practical to disassemble the chassis of a real Mac Pro, but a space frame can sit elegantly on any Apple Store table. Physical Apple Stores remain relevant in an era of online shopping specifically because they offer an experience customers can’t get online. That’s why it’s so important for Apple to be cautious when evaluating the merits of in-store augmented reality. By building a rich digital store around the latest technologies and selecting in-store demos only where appropriate, Apple can create the best experience for customers online and in person.

Hot Iphone, Android Trend: Augmented Reality

Augmented reality, or the ability to overlay information on real-world views seen through a smartphone camera lens, is poised to become the next hot trend in mobile apps.

Until recently augmented reality (AR) was mainly relegated to college and other research labs. That’s changing, as AR is starting to show up in mobile applications with the release of new smartphones, including the iPhone 3GS and Android handsets, equipped to support the technology.

“We’re entering a whole new era of augmented reality because now smartphones have compasses, sensors, GPS, accelerometers and powerful processors,” Eric Klopfer, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who conducts AR research, told chúng tôi

“You need to detect orientation, the ability to know not just where you are, but which direction you’re facing, that’s critical for augmented reality apps and now it’s here.”

Chetan Damani’s company is one of the developers who submitted AR apps to Apple upon release of OS 3.1. He’s founder and managing director of Imano, a London-based firm that creates apps that enable users to display subway information over real-world images of metropolitan areas, and has several versions on tap for cities around the world, including New York and San Francisco.

“We have quite a few AR apps, which are ready to go live,” Damani said in an e-mail sent to chúng tôi “We have many more in the pipeline including apps for major brands and AR games.”

Down the road, Damani said his company hopes to create more interactive AR apps.

“Quite a few opportunities are available. We are focusing on building an AR browser that will allow companies, brands and individuals to build on top of the browser, adding their own data feeds and designs,” he said. “Right now, the biggest issues are regarding the accuracy of the GPS, but there are new solutions to that, and we are looking to implement them.”

Social networking and AR

Beyond the travel and tourist type apps, which Klopfer called the “low-hanging fruit,” we can also expect to see a significant rise in AR apps that incorporate social networking.

“There are some very interesting social apps, I think on the horizon we’ll see a lot of gaming apps and see social interaction come into play, like location-based Twitter feeds,” Klopfer said.

Social media analyst Jeremiah Owyang agrees. “What’s the trend? Convergence. Mobile devices are giving birth to applications that triangulate geo data, compasses and social data and serve up unique experiences,” Owyang wrote in a recent blog post discussing AR.

One early example comes from Mobilizy, an Austrian-based firm, and the creator of a new app that combines user-generated content with AR.

On Aug. 29 the company updated its signature AR Android app Wikitude, which pulls information from Wikipedia and Qype, the European user-generated review service, and overlays that data on points of interest. Version 3 of Wikitude now integrates with the company’s own user-generated geo-tagging app chúng tôi which was also updated.

Wikitude.me lets users create their own points-of-interest and location-specific, hyper-linked digital content that can be viewed through the Wikitude browser app.

“Wikitude.me is the first platform which allows individuals to actively contribute to augmented reality. This is an amazing and huge step forward in the AR industry,” says Markus Tripp, the project manager for Wikitude, at the company’s Web site.

Damani, however, says AR is going to have huge repercussions in the mobile sector beyond the app market.

The AR system named ‘Virtual Fixtures’ was an incredible complex robotic system designed to compensate for the lack of high-speed 3D graphics processing power. Apple Car Keys: What Is It And Is There An Android Alternative?

Opinion: iPhone 6S getting iOS 14 is like the Galaxy S6 getting Android 11. Imagine that.

What is Apple Car Keys doing that makes it special?

For starters, Apple’s solution bucks a lot of trends. A lot of smart tech requires the cloud and, therefore, a constant data connection. Apple Car Keys does not need those things. NFC technology is available even while offline, so you can unlock your car anywhere, even in an underground garage or other places where a connection is spotty. That already makes it better than some car manufacturer solutions since all of those require server access.

Some other unique features include full Apple Watch support, so you don’t even need to take your phone out of your pocket if you have the Watch too. You also don’t need an iOS Car Keys app to make it work — it can either sit in Wallet or activate as soon as you wave your iPhone over your car’s lock (as long as it has Apple Car Keys compatibility, of course). Finally, Apple has an API for this and isn’t relying on apps or services from car manufacturers. Even Android solutions like the official Tesla app require a third-party app to make it all work.

The only downside is that the number of Apple Car Keys compatible cars will be restricted to a handful of BMW vehicles at launch. Support should improve over time.

Apple’s solution and execution are both extra clean. Everything takes place on or near your person without any cloud access or any special tricks. You tap your phone or watch to a supported car, and boom, the car is unlocked. It’s hard to criticize that on any level. The good news is that this technology probably won’t be restricted solely to Apple.

You can kind of do this with NFC already

NFC tech in cars is still rather new, but it definitely didn’t start with Apple and it definitely won’t end with Apple.

It’s not really worth it for folks who don’t know this stuff, but the tech is already more accessible. Tesla was among the first to address the problem as you can use NFC to unlock your Tesla via its app. In other words, this tech was coming whether Apple brought it or not. The question is whether or not Android follows suit with OS-level integration or if it’s up to app developers to bring it to all of us. It’s not a matter of if; it’s a matter of when.

NFC is only one option

Car Connectivity Consortium

Many carmakers, including the aforementioned ones above, have apps that let you unlock your phone over a network connection. You can also get third-party components that perform more or less the same task, such as MoboKey and Viper SmartStart. Apps and services like those use Bluetooth Low Energy or a mobile data connection over a server to start your car and do all sorts of other things.

On the low end, you can unlock and remote start your car. The high-end options let you engage climate controls, see the last place you parked, check diagnostics, and, if your vehicle supports it, even leave the parking spot and find you. The high-end options are a lot more difficult to find and a lot more expensive to install.

Many car makers, including Ford, Chevrolet, and Hyundai (via Blue Link) also have apps that let you unlock your phone over a network connection. However, NFC is definitely the best tech for a manual, offline method. Simply tapping your car in the right spot to open it is a neat trick, and it’s easier to pull out a phone than it is your keys half the time. However, with Bluetooth Low Energy, we will eventually just get into the car and drive off as long as our phones are on us. That’s not a wild guess either. Companies are working on this technology right now.

Enter the Car Connectivity Consortium, a group of auto and technology companies. The group’s goal is to standardize the tech in every car so that everyone gets a similar experience. The group was established back in 2011 to use today’s new technology such as NFC and Bluetooth in cars. In fact, its announcement press release mentions NFC specifically.

The Consortium didn’t take the last nine years off, however. They finalized Digital Key Release 2.0 just last May — a standardized and secure method for vehicle owners to use their own mobile devices as a digital key specifically via NFC. We’re relatively certain that Apple Car Keys uses Digital Key Release 2.0 because the specs and use are so similar.
