Suggested March 2024 Mac Webcam Hijack Affects Ringcentral And Zhumu As Well As Zoom
Update: Apple is pushing a new security update to remove these webservers too.
The Mac webcam hijack flaw discovered in the Zoom video conference app is also present in RingCentral and Zhumu.
The evidence also suggests that the same vulnerability will exist in other Mac video conferencing apps …
Apple pushed a silent security update to macOS to remove the local webserver installed by Zoom, but it does not remove those installed by RingCentral and Zhumu.
Security researcher Jonathan Leitschuh, who discovered the issue in Zoom, speculated that the Mac webcam hijack vulnerability was likely present in RingCentral too. Fellow researcher Karan Lyons has now confirmed this.
RingCentral (and Zhumu, and likely all of Zoom’s white labels) are vulnerable to another, slightly different, RCE. They are not automatically removed by Apple.
As TNW notes, this is because both apps use the same underlying code.
Both RingCentral and Zhumu are powered by Zoom, with the former used by over 350,000 organizations. Zhumu, on the other hand, is essentially a Chinese version of the app, which Zoom bought in 2013.
A ‘white label’ app is essentially a complete copy of an established app, but rebranded for a client company. It has a different name and may have a slightly different user interface, but because the core code is the same, it will generally have the same vulnerabilities as the original.
As Lyons notes, Zhumu is not the only white label version of Zoom, so there are likely other Mac videoconferencing apps out there with the same flaw.
Apple’s update only removes the webserver created by Zoom itself.
RingCentral has issued an emergency patch.
RingCentral has issued an update to RingCentral Meetings that resolves the General Concern, “Video ON Concern” on MacOS, CVE 2023-13449 and CVE 2023-13450.
Users will be prompted to download RingCentral Meetings MacOS app v7.0.151508.0712.
All users that have installed RingCentral Meetings on MacOS should accept the update. Please ensure that all RingCentral Meetings MacOS versions prior to v7.0.151508.0712 are removed.
RingCentral is continuing to work on addressing the General Concern related to “Video ON Concern” for additional platforms. We will continue to provide updates.
There’s no known patch as yet for the Mac webcam hijack flaw in Zhumu. However, Lyons has provided a set of three Terminal commands which will kill and remove the webservers, and prevent them being reinstalled.
To remove the three currently known daemons manually, run these commands in your Terminal:rm -rf
These three commands do the same thing for the three most popular white labels of Zoom (Zoom, RingCentral, and Zhumu). They remove the web server if it exists at the hidden directory , and create an empty file and set permissions on it such that the hidden server cannot be reinstalled back to that location. Finally they kill the server if it is running.
Lyons notes that while Apple’s own update addresses Safari, things get more complicated if you use Chrome or Firefix as your default browser.
If you’re using Safari on macOS you’re now good to go. However if you’re using any other browser (even on other operating systems) you may still see a link immediately open Zoom for you. This is not the same vulnerability (no RCE), and is in fact one you yourself opted into, though you may not have realized it. This will occur if you ever checked a box on a pop-up window for a Zoom meeting link that said something like “Always open these links in Zoom”.
She provides instructions for dealing with these browsers.
Physical webcam covers are looking like an increasingly smart idea.

Oculus Rift release in 2024 as real as The Matrix
This week Michael Abrash, Chief Programmer for Oculus VR, spoke about what virtual reality was, and what it’ll be to you in the near future. He made a point to mention Ready Player One and Snow Crash as inspirations to him for the beginnings of Virtual Reality. He also made mention of The Matrix – his one, true inspiration for the way Virtual Reality can be interpreted as. “If you are talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see,” he said, quoting Morpheus, “then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.”NOTE: This isn’t the first time Ready Player One has been mentioned this week. It’s been sourced as a point of inspiration by the creator of a 4-year-long project resulting in a rather non-VR sort of Star Wars experience, and it’s been given a director for a film adaptation.
“We are inference machines,” said Abrash, “not objective observers.” He gave an example of where the Inference model “breaks down.” He showed a video with a set of spinning objects, suggesting that a set of inferences that are almost always right – here – were wrong. We don’t have to be shown the full truth to believe it – visually, anyway.
“No matter which pill you choose, we’re all headed down the same path together… Welcome to the rabbit hole.”
“Identifying potentially relevant features” is what your brain does. That’s what’s important, suggested Abrash, when we’re considering virtual reality. That’s what Oculus VR studies and what the crew works with to help your brain understand the obviousness of the truth.
At the moment, said Abrash, the Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype was good – but not quite good enough. The chart you see below shows what Crescent Bay presents VS what the Real World presents.
It’ll take real trickery to make the mind believe its in a virtual universe – one that seems real.
Abrash also suggested that while much improvement needed to be made, and that there was lots of ROOM for improvement, we’ve already got most of what we need to make it all happen. Compute power – processing power – is what’s needed to make it all happen.
“Reality is what our brain reconstructs it to be,” said Abrash. “Our experience of the world is an illusion.”
But what about the device?
When would the Oculus Rift be launched for consumers?
Earlier in the keynote, Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer suggested that virtual reality gaming was coming “this year.”
In suggesting users would be able to game on “something” shipped by Oculus this year, it’s far more likely that he was referencing the Gear VR than the first Oculus Rift for consumers – but you never know!
Also the Samsung Gear VR comes to Best Buy tomorrow. So he may just have been speaking about that. No big deal.UPDATE: To make certain it was clear what he actually meant, Schroepfer suggested after the keynote that he “did not announce anything regarding shipping, just said PC hardware [was] available this year can create these experiences.”
The latest ChangeWave Consumer Smartphone survey suggests Research In Motion and Apple’s will wipe the floor with other manufacturers, as the two horse race between the two firms for dominance of the smartphone sector pushes other makers out of the game.
Director of research, Paul Carton, notes that prior to the release of the iPhone 3G, his surveys had suggested the device would have a huge impact on the market. It did. Apple sold one million units in the first weekend, and demand remains high today.
“RIM isn’t taking the Apple 3G challenge lying down,” Carton notes. “The Canadian manufacturer has multiple plans in motion to counter Apple’s momentum among consumers, including an already announced new product release (the Bold) and two likely additional product releases (the Thunder and Kickstart).”
Just after the announcement of the iPhone 3G and just before the product shipped, ChangeWave surveyed 3,567 consumers on their reaction to the new RIM counteroffensive. And while consumers don’t appear as enthusiastic about the company’s forthcoming devices, they do seem keen enough to place a challenge to the Apple attack.
A total of 4% of respondents report they’re Very Likely to buy the new RIM/BlackBerry Bold when it becomes available. Another 13% are Somewhat Likely.
Slightly less positive but nonetheless significant, 2% of respondents say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Thunder when available. A total of 13% are Somewhat Likely.
Another 2% say they’re Very Likely to buy a RIM/BlackBerry Kickstart when it becomes available, and 11% are Somewhat Likely.
“These results show consumers hungry for all varieties of BlackBerry,” said Tobin Smith, founder of ChangeWave Research and editor of ChangeWave Investing, who added, “it appears like when it comes to the BlackBerry, the adage ‘if you build it, they will come,’ certainly holds true.”
The strength of these early survey results on the demand for RIM’s new products points to a potentially powerful counteroffensive to Apple’s 3G iPhone, according to Smith. “The real losers in this smart phone battle will most likely be the second-tier players, who could find themselves increasingly pushed to the sidelines as the two Goliaths battle for market dominance.”
ChangeWave also looked at the impact of the new RIM releases on the rest of the smartphone industry – current RIM customers are two-to-three times more likely to buy new models than customers of other manufacturers. Competing firms most at risk from the two horse Apple/RIM battle include Palm, Motorola and Samsung, Changewave said.
Apple customers, on the other hand, appear least likely to buy any of the new RIM phones,” they added.
“The Apple iPhone has captured the hearts and minds of its user base, and so has the RIM BlackBerry,” the researchers said. “Fortunately for both, the global consumer and enterprise smart phone markets are big enough to support both Apple and RIM – it’s the other cell phone manufacturers that look like the real losers.”
RIM should be concerned, however. As you can see in this graph, they’ve netted a 1% loss in marketshare for the 1st 1/2 of 2008…and that is before the 3G iPhone ws released.

For most of its independent life, psychology has been dominated by Freudian, behaviorist, and cognitive schools of thought. Only in the later years of the twentieth century did psychologists start acknowledging human and subjective aspects of the mind. This approach has been collectively named the humanistic approach. This approach emphasizes free will, optimism, and the fulfillment of one’s potential. One of the greatest psychologists who represents the humanistic approach was Carl Rogers (1902 – 1987). Carl Rogers had made major contributions to psychology in general and counseling, developmental, and personality psychology in particular. The upcoming sections explore the life and contributions of this genius who revolutionized counseling psychology.Education and Early Life
Carl Rogers was born in 1902 in Illinois to a very strict and religious family. He was a lonely child who loved reading as a means of escape from the less desirable life he had. He also had an inferiority complex against his older brother, whom he assumed to be favored by his parents, leading to his competitive attitude towards him. Rogers had poor physical health and was perceived as a nervous and sensitive kid by his family. He moved to farms at 12, where he developed an interest in insects like moths and scientific and empirical agricultural practices.
Initially, Rogers joined a graduation course in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin, which he left in its second year to get into ministry. A few years later, he got an opportunity to travel to China for a student conference, a visit that changed his life and perception forever. This trip played a critical role in liberating Rogers from his parents’ fundamentalist codes and adopting his own. After returning from China, he took a break to recover from the physical and psychological distress caused by his breaking with his parents’ views. He worked and received his Ph.D. in clinical and educational psychology from the Teachers’ College of South Columbia in the year 1931. Finally, in 1941, Rogers started his academic and teaching career as a professor at the Ohio State University. He not only started building his theory but also worked to bring clinical psychology into mainstream psychology.
In 1945, Rogers started working at the University of Chicago. During his tenure in Chicago, he helped set up many counseling centers. During his professorship in Chicago, he used to counsel many of his students. When he failed to resolve one such case, it made him think of himself as worthless, helpless, and incapable. This led to a major nervous breakdown in his life, leading him to leave the university and take a break of 6 months.
After recovering from the Chicago incident, Carl Rogers went to teach at the University of Wisconsin from 1957 to 1963. During this time, he published many articles and books. After that, in 1964, Rogers became a resident fellow at the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in California.
Rogers’ education and life majorly shaped his views about human nature, personality, and counseling, and we can see its traces in his assumptions, propositions, and conceptualizations.Role in Psychology
Rogers made many contributions to psychology. His contributions range from developmental psychology to personality psychology, counseling, and research methodologies. These have been discussed below.Person-Centered Therapy
The notion of Self − Rogers considered self as one’s perception of who one is as ‘ I, “; “we,” and ‘myself.’ He stated that the self could be ideal, real, and ought. He also concluded that congruence between the three is important to living a fully functioning life. He considered this self-dynamic and changed over time based on one’s experiences and perceptions.
Personality theory − Rogers’s view of personality is non-deterministic. He believed that one can and does develop one’s personality over time. This development, he stated, depended on childhood experiences, the condition of worth created, one is actualizing tendency, and one is subjective perceptions. He also suggested that personality develops over time, with genes playing a small role compared to the environment.
Person-Centered Therapy − This is one of the most popular therapies. It suggests that the center of the therapy is the individual and that the initiatives have to be taken by the person. The therapist only acts as a facilitator in therapy. This therapy assumes that the client is capable of resolving his problems.
Encounter group − In his later years, Rogers also came up with encounter group therapy, in which people could learn more about themselves and how they related to or encountered one another. This type of therapy involves a group of people who gather together regularly to discuss their feelings and perceptions in a positive environment provided by the facilitator to the group members.View of Human Nature
Carl Rogers was a humanist. His view of human nature was optimistic and progressive, and he considered people responsible and capable of changing their present condition. The basic propositions of Rogers about human nature are as follows:
He believed that personality is dynamic and shaped by recent experiences rather than past childhood experiences.
He suggested that the primary motivation for personality development is self-actualization.
One needs unconditional positive regard in childhood for optimum development.
Self-actualization is a process that takes place throughout one’s life.
One is that subjective perception shapes personality and this perception may not be congruent with reality.
Inconsistency between the ideal and actual selves causes emotional distress and psychological problems. These emotional problems he suggested are uncommon and can be solved by the person.
Humans have a free choice to decide their fate and personality.
The environment than genetics, influences one’s behavior and personality.
Personality characteristics are universal, but how these qualities are expressed may differ.
Humans have an innate tendency to grow and fulfill their potential.Achievements and Publications
Carl Rogers has published the most revolutionary content in psychology files, which is often considered a classic, especially for humanistic and counseling psychology. His major publications are Counseling and Psychotherapy (1942), Client-Centered Therapy: Its Current Practices, Implications, and Theory (1951), On Becoming a Person (1961), and A Co-Ordinated Research in Psychotherapy (1949), among others. Rogers was also accorded many distinguished awards, like the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award and the Distinguished Professional Contribution Award. He also acted as the President of the American Psychological Association in 1946.Conclusion
Carl Rogers is considered one of the most influential humanists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His contributions have a great impact and implications for the present psychology concepts. Whether it be his personality theory or the person-centered approach to theory, they have helped many academics and ordinary people. His optimistic view of human nature is inspiring and relevant for the future. In this twenty-first century, the role of humanistic psychology will only increase, and so will the relevance of the propositions made by Carl Rogers.
