When you thought that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining life on Earth, think again! Meet CIMON, the first AI-powered th to join the crew and assist astronauts of the International Space Station (ISS). CIMON was launched by a SpaceX rocket carrying food and supplies for the crew aboard the International Space Station. At CIMON’s pre-launch news conference, Kirk Shireman, NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) program manager, addressed that the knowledge base and ability to tap into AI in a way that is useful for the task that is done is really critical for having humans further and further away from the planet. CIMON or (Crew Interactive Mobile Companion) is programmed to answer voice commands in English. The AI-powered robot is roughly the size of a volleyball and weighs 5 kilograms. When you thought that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining life on Earth, think again! Meet CIMON, the first AI-powered robot who was launched into space from Florida on Friday, June 29to join the crew and assist astronauts of the International Space Station (ISS). CIMON will float through the zero-gravity environment of the space station to research a database of information about the ISS. In addition to the mechanical tasks assigned, the AI-powered CIMON can even assess the moods of its human crewmates at the ISS and interact accordingly with them.CIMON is the brainchild of the European aerospace company Airbus . With the artificial intelligence inside powered by IBM, AI-Powered CIMON was initially built for the German space agency. Alexander Gerst, a German astronaut currently aboard the ISS, assisted with the design of CIMON’s screen prompts and vocal controls. As per the mission description written by Airbus representatives, CIMON’s mission calls for the AI-Powered astronaut robot to work with Gerst on three separate investigations. Cimon’s tasks at ISS include experimenting with crystals, working together with Gerst to solve the Rubik’s cube and performing a complex medical experiment using itself as an ‘intelligent’ flying camera. CIMON can interact with anyone at ISS, the AI-powered robot will nod when any command is spoken in English. However, CIMON is programmed to specifically help Gerst during its first stay on the ISS. Alexander Gerst can make CIMON work by speaking commands in English like, ‘CIMON, could you please help me perform a certain experiment? Or could you please help me with the procedure?’” In response, CIMON will fly towards Alexander Gerst, to start the communication. CIMON knows whom it is talking to through its inbuilt facial-recognition software. If you thought that CIMON would look like a mechanical robot, you are wrong. CIMON has a face of its own, a white screen with a smiley face ?. The astronaut AI assistant will be able to float around, by sucking air in and expelling it out through its special tubes once it is aboard the ISS. CIMON’s mission to the space demonstrates researchers, the collaboration of humans and AI-powered technology for further explorations. However, it will be a long way before intelligent robots are ready to undertake principal tasks in the final frontier including helping astronauts repair damaged spacecraft systems or treating sick crewmembers. But a beginning has been made with CIMON and that day will probably be a reality soon. In its first space mission, CIMON will stay in space for a few months and is scheduled to return to earth in December. Post its return, scientists will study and assess its abilities for future implementations. With the launch of CIMON, a lifelong space-exploration association between humans and machine may have just begun.
A new website sounds great in theory…
However, a new website project can quickly derail and cause more harm than good. Whether the new website is being designed and developed by an agency or internally within your own organization, it is important to stay on the pulse of the project. Reviving a website from a bad launch or a complete breakdown is a lot harder than following the site changes step by step — from start to hand-off.
In an effort to help guide your website project down a smooth river, here are five quick tips to better manage the transition period.1. Make Your Voice Heard
The most important step to ensuring the ball isn’t dropped on your website is setting the expectations from day one. Voicing your concerns, your wants, and your timeline are essential to reducing headaches and confusion. Minimizing communication gaps are vital to the success of the website’s development — you’re investing money and time into this project, be sure the final product meets your standards.2. Create a Redirect Strategy
It’s simple oversight, but not drafting a redirect strategy for all your pages from the old site to the new one is a sure-fire way to make the entire process a disaster. Imagine all the 301 and 404 error messages that will occur for site visitors… Not ideal. Creating a plan that arranges for all URLs to be transitioned successfully upon launch is a fundamental building block to preventing any major hiccups arising. Additionally, it is best practice to try and keep the transitioning content on the same URLs.3. Protect Your Staging Site From Google
Another technical aspect to keep in mind during the build process is to make sure that your new (unfinished) site is not indexed by Google. This can happen in multiple scenarios, but often staging sites are accidentally indexed because there is a misconfiguration of the chúng tôi file. This can cause a big SEO problem if the new site ranks for your keywords, so just make sure to add HTTP authentication or use a VPN until the switch from old to new is ready to go live.4. AB Test and Adjust It
Unrolling a new website is also the perfect time to perform an SEO split test. A lot of factors play into search engine rankings, and moving the wrong pieces can drop your spot rather quickly. Therefore, during a transition period for a website, it is a good idea to examine what factors may boost or drag down your individual pages. Is it on-page content? Meta descriptions? Load time? Finding areas where you can adjust your SEO approach will further increase the success of the new website version.5. Prioritize Mobile Experience
In today’s internet climate, a website needs to have excellent user experience on mobile devices. Over the past five years, mobile internet searches have increased by 200-plus percent, with up to 70 percent of all internet searches coming from a smartphone or tablet. A website must be built and optimized for mobile viewing, no excuses. Consumers are researching and buying from these handheld devices, in order to sell to them, your new website has to provide an easy and effective mobile experience.Need Help Improving Your Website?

Two years ago, then MIT graduate student Caleb Harper built a fully networked farm of tomatoes, lettuce, and broccoli inside a fourth-floor lounge at the school’s famed Media Lab. He hoped to prove he could use data science to optimize crop yields, boost nutrient density, and trim water consumption by 98 percent compared with traditional dirt farming, all of which he did. But there was no meaningful way to share his data with the world. Despite an ongoing boom in agricultural technology, no one cared about his findings or dared to share theirs. This September, he launched the Open Agriculture Initiative, the first open-source platform for global agriculture and food hackers.Popular Science: How is agriculture not open-source? Don’t we pretty much know how to grow a tomato?
Caleb Harper: No. Traditional agriculture is closed and opaque. It’s understood by very few people at a production scale. How do I find nutritional-uptake studies on lettuce? Where can I get data on crop yields in Ghana? We want people to research this stuff, share it online, and grow healthier food and more of it around the world. There’s a huge appetite for this.PS: So who is hoarding all the useful information?
CH: Right now, there are 20,000-foot indoor farms popping up all over the world. But no one shares anything because they think their IP is so valuable. One place called PlantLab in the Netherlands has a warehouse full of little pods where they create microclimates, which in turn create a novel flavor, a novel shape, and specific nutrients in the plants. And then they patent their processes. To be fair to them, they’re doing awesome work. This stuff can take a lifetime to figure out. But they are creating all this knowledge and then scooping it under a black box. We want to create plant-growing recipes that look like Wikipedia.PS: How do you propose to do that?
CH: One thing we’re developing is a shipping-container farm modified with networked sensors and growing environments. It can be used by other research institutions and by corporate cafeterias. So we’ll all be connected to each other’s data. Another cool thing is the Personal Food Computer. We released it for testing in September. It’s a 2-by-2-foot cube with microsensors, an LED light bar, and an irrigation system. We can change the temperature, the CO2 level, the amount of nutrients in the water, the water temperature, mineral fertilizer—all this stuff.PS: It sounds like the state of 3-D printing 10 years ago, when the open-source RepRap helped create a huge community of printer hackers.
CH: Exactly. Our Personal Food Computer is an open-source bio bot, a food bot for maker enthusiasts to create a community. What’s been holding agtech back is that none of the black boxes and systems can talk to each other.PS: So what can you do with it?
CH: People always want me to answer that. I dunno. It’s like personal computers in the ’70s. The extensions are endless. You can be an idiot and have fun, or revolutionize how tomatoes are grown. It could become a personal pharmacy. We can all be sequenced, and grow the food best for us. That’s one of a thousand stories waiting to be written.

Generative AI is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to generate original media such as text, images, video, or audio in response to prompts from users. Popular generative AI applications include ChatGPT, Bard, DALL-E, and Midjourney.
Most generative AI is powered by deep learning technologies such as large language models (LLMs). These are models trained on a vast quantity of data (e.g., text) to recognize patterns so that they can produce appropriate responses to the user’s prompts.
This technology has seen rapid growth in sophistication and popularity in recent years, especially since the release of ChatGPT in November 2023. The ability to generate content on demand has major implications in a wide variety of contexts, such as academia and creative industries. How does generative AI work?
Generative AI is a broad concept that can theoretically be approached using a variety of different technologies. In recent years, though, the focus has been on the use of neural networks, computer systems that are designed to imitate the structures of brains.
Highly complex neural networks are the basis for large language models (LLMs), which are trained to recognize patterns in a huge quantity of text (billions or trillions of words) and then reproduce them in response to prompts (text typed in by the user).
An LLM generates each word of its response by looking at all the text that came before it and predicting a word that is relatively likely to come next based on patterns it recognizes from its training data. You can think of it as a supercharged version of predictive text. The fact that it generally works so well seems to be a product of the enormous amount of data it was trained on.
LLMs, especially a specific type of LLM called a generative pre-trained transformer (GPT), are used in most current generative AI applications—including many that generate something other than text (e.g., image generators like DALL-E). This means that things like images, music, and code can be generated based only on a text description of what the user wants.Types of generative AI
Generative AI has a variety of different use cases and powers several popular applications. The table below indicates the main types of generative AI application and provides examples of each.Strengths and limitations of generative AI
Generative AI is a powerful and rapidly developing field of technology, but it’s still a work in progress. It’s important to understand what it excels at and what it tends to struggle with so far.Strengths
Generative AI technology is often flexible and can generalize to a variety of tasks rather than specializing in just one. This opens up opportunities to explore its use in a wide range of contexts.
This technology can make any business processes that involve generating text or other content (e.g., writing emails, planning projects, creating images) dramatically more efficient, allowing small teams to accomplish more and bigger teams to focus on more ambitious projects.
Generative AI tools allow non-experts to approach tasks they would normally be unable to handle. This allows people to explore areas of creativity and work that were previously inaccessible to them.Limitations
Generative AI models often hallucinate—for example, a chatbot’s answers might be factually incorrect, or an image generator’s outputs might contain incongruous details like too many fingers on a person’s hand. Outputs should always be checked for accuracy and quality.
These tools are trained on datasets that may be biased in various ways (e.g., sexism), and the tools can therefore reproduce those biases. For example, an image generator asked to provide an image of a CEO may be more likely to show a man than a woman.
Although they’re trained on large datasets and draw on all that data for their responses, generative AI tools generally can’t tell you what sources they’re using in a specific response. This means it can be difficult to trace the sources of, for example, factual claims or visual elements.Implications of generative AI
The rise of generative AI raises a lot of questions about the effects—positive or negative—that different applications of this technology could have on a societal level. Commonly discussed issues include:
Jobs and automation: Many people are concerned about the effects of generative AI on various creative jobs. For example, will it be harder for illustrators to find work when they have to compete with image generators? Others claim that these tools will force various industries to adapt but also create new roles as existing tasks are automated.
Effects on academia: Many academics are concerned about ChatGPT cheating among their students and about the lack of clear guidelines on how to approach these tools. University policies on AI writing are still developing.
Plagiarism and copyright concerns: Some argue that generative AI’s use of sources from its training data should be treated as plagiarism or copyright infringement. For example, some artists have attempted legal action against AI companies, arguing that image generators use elements of their work and stylistic approach without acknowledgement or compensation.
Fake news and scams: Generative AI tools can be used to deliberately spread misinformation (e.g., deepfake videos) or enable scams (e.g., imitating someone’s voice to steal their identity). They can also spread misinformation by accident if people assume, for example, that everything ChatGPT claims is factually correct without checking it against a credible source.
Future developments: There is a lot of uncertainty about how AI is likely to develop in the future. Some argue that the rapid developments in generative AI are a major step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), while others suspect that we’re reaching the limits of what can be done with current approaches to AI and that future innovations will use very different techniques.Other interesting articles
