Why Is Bluestacks Causing High Cpu Usage?

With Bluestacks you are virtualizing a second operating system (Android) using CPU virtualization. It takes a lot of CPU power and memory (RAM) utilization to run BlueStacks, which will result in high CPU usage. While a rise in resource usage is normal, there are things you can do to manage your processing and memory resources while using Bluestacks.

Part of the reason why you’re seeing high CPU usage simply has to do with what Bluestacks is and how it works. An emulator like Bluestacks uses virtualization to simulate hardware functionality and create a virtual Android system. It also allocates some of your RAM and CPU usage as dedicated resources to do this.

The other part has to do with how your computer allocates CPU usage as a dedicated resource. Normally, when you open up Task Manager and see CPU usage, it’s showing you data based on set bounds (0%-100%).

When you run Bluestack, it only takes as much RAM and CPU power as it needs at that moment. Since it’s allocated as a dedicated resource, Task Manager sees this as 100% of the CPU resources you have, even if the program only took 30%. It’s fully using that 30%, however, so Task Manager translates this to 100%.

That aside, there are two possible reasons why Bluestacks is using a lot of processing power-maybe even more than it should.

Most of the time, you don’t want to mess around with resource allocations for a program, but it’s pretty much necessary with Bluestack. You may need to allocate more CPU cores and memory to the emulator.

It could also be useful to limit some of these resources in order to improve your CPU usage. This depends entirely on your setup and what apps you want to run on Bluestacks.

No matter which way you look at it, running an emulator like Bluestacks can be CPU and RAM-intensive. If your hardware is older, your PC might not entirely be up to the challenge of providing the resources Bluestack needs.

Be aware that these fixes are for Bluestack 5, which is the latest version of Bluestack at the time of writing. Some of these tips will also work with older versions.

Normally, Bluestacks is limited to using just one CPU core, which might not be enough for your needs. Before you can allocate any more CPU cores to Bluestacks, you have to enable virtualization first. Without it, your other cores are automatically locked and you won’t even have the option of accessing them.

Make sure VT/VT-d/VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD) is enabled in your BIOS – the version you have and where to find it in your BIOS depends on your motherboard. You can look in your motherboard’s manual or find a guide online to see how to access your BIOS and where to find the VT setting. BlueStacks also has a guide on how to enable virtualization on its support page.

You don’t want BlueStacks to run on just one CPU core but you don’t want to give it access to all of your cores either. Luckily, you can manage CPU and RAM resources right from within the BlueStacks home screen by going to the settings menu. The developer provides an excellent guide on its support page on how to do this.

Bluestacks recommends using either 2 or 4 cores, depending on how graphically demanding your games or apps are. You can also try to just reduce the CPU Cores given to BlueStacks to half of your core count.

This is mainly applicable if you only have 4 cores to start with as you never want to allocate all of your cores to BlueStack. It won’t leave your PC with enough resources to function properly.

You can follow the same BlueStacks guide as above to manage your RAM allocation. I’d recommend that you increase RAM usage for BlueStacks to at least 3 GB, especially if you’re running multiple apps at the same time. It can also help reduce gaming lag if you’re running more resource-intensive games.

Using this method, you’ll have to repeat these steps every time you start up your PC. You can also set the process priority for Bluestacks permanently using Powershell.

Third-party virtual machines and emulators like BlueStack don’t work well with Hyper-V enabled. You need to make sure it’s disabled first and if it isn’t then you need to disable it. Windows provides a handy guide on how to do this. 

While you’re busy, you’ll also have to disable Windows Defender Device Guard and Credential Guard to keep these features from interfering with your emulator. Follow this guide from Windows to disable them.

Bluestacks 5 has a feature called Eco Mode. It limits the app to a certain percentage of CPU usage and limits your max FPS to 30. The company promises about an 87% drop in CPU usage with Eco Mode, although your actual numbers may be quite different. 

This is also a great solution if you’re looking to run multiple instances of BlueStacks at the same time but want to allocate different resources to them. The Multi-instance Manager in Eco Mode gives you the ability to carefully fine-tune how much CPU usage and FPS each instance can get.

Sometimes, the only way to get something to work properly is through a fresh start. Make sure to backup any important save files before you completely uninstall BlueStacks. Keep in mind that if you reinstall the app, you’ll likely also lose all of your resource allocation settings.

If all else fails, you can report the issue to the support team – use these steps on the Bluestacks support page to file a report. It could be that there’s an issue with your system or hardware or there’s something wrong with the app version you’re using. They may be able to help you pinpoint the exact problem.

The tester also measures your latency to Nvidia’s servers, and what percentage of frames are lost in transit, though the frame loss measurement acted weird in my testing. It said that almost 80 percent of frames were lost on a PC wired directly into my Comcast modem/router combo, even though dropped frames has never been an issue for me. GeForce Now has been available for years on Nvidia’s sublime Shield hardware. GeForce Now for PCs and Macs sports the same name, but it’s a different beast entirely. PCWorld’s GeForce Now vs. GeForce Now break-down gets into the nitty-gritty details but basically, GeForce Now for Shield is like Netflix for games. You pay $8 per month and can stream a selection of games as much as you want.

GeForce Now for PCs and Macs instead grants you access to a virtual gaming PC on Nvidia servers, where you can install and run games you already own from Steam, Uplay, and Blizzard’s chúng tôi Fortnite and League of Legends can also be played. After installing GeForce Now and logging into (or creating) your Nvidia account, you’re dumped into a clean but disorienting interface. The GeForce Now homescreen features a gigantic, scrolling list of games, separated by genre and other classifications. It also includes games you don’t own. Selecting a game boots you into its storefront, where you’re able to install it (or given the option to purchase the game) after logging into your account for that platform. It was much easier for me to find my games by using the search interface in the toolbar.

“These are games that we’ve tested and include support for quick install, persistent saves (game save data will persist from session to session), cloud saves (if the individual game supports it), and quick launches following the initial game session,” Nvidia’s Jordan Dodge tells me.

After you install a supported game in GeForce Now, it’ll permanently appear in your Library tab, making it much faster to find it in the future. The homescreen interface would be vastly more helpful if it included the ability to sort through all supported games in alphabetical order, especially since you already need to own them to play them.

That’s all true, but if your game of choice supports Steam Cloud saves, it doesn’t matter that Nvidia doesn’t save your progress through GeForce Now. The initial install on supported games is astonishingly fast, taking mere seconds. Nvidia’s connection blasts through unsupported games at a blistering rate too, though, as you can see in the image above. Downloading XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s 9.2GB only took a couple of minutes. You’ll need to repeat the process whenever you want to play an unsupported game, though, and unsupported games never appear in your GeForce Now library for quick access.

The lackluster main interface and the way Nvidia hides non-supported Steam games are my biggest gripes with GeForce Now, but those are the sort of things that can be fixed quickly. I have no complaints about the core GeForce Now experience—actually playing games.

I don’t even have a face-melting connection, which made me keen to test the service. My basic Comcast home Internet plan promises at least 25Mbps download speeds, barely skirting by GeForce Now’s minimum requirement, and doesn’t deliver much more than that. Because of that I tested the service while plugged into my router via ethernet the entire time.

And it ran like a champ despite GeForce Now network scans that (incorrectly) claimed I was dropping frames left and right.

Supported games installed and were ready to play in mere seconds. Once I booted into games they looked beautiful, powered by GeForce Now’s GTX 1080-equivalent graphics. (In-game settings reveal the real hardware as a Tesla P40 with 24.5GB of VRAM.) GeForce Now automatically uses Nvidia’s Optimal Playable Settings for some of its games, but the service doesn’t hide or lock any in-game visual settings.

Gaming feels great, too. With every other cloud gaming service I’ve tested, you always felt like you were battling the technical infrastructure—lag, stuttering, pixelated images, et cetera—just as much as your enemies. Not with GeForce Now.

The single time GeForce Now hiccuped in many hours of testing, it got real ugly—though the disruption lasted less than 10 seconds.

If you pay close attention to the visuals you’ll sometimes notice minor compromises introduced by the service. A lot of the time graphics appear flawless. But image quality can occasionally be slightly softer than what you’d see on a comparable local gaming rig, and fine details slightly less fine—there’s sometimes a vague sense of graininess. Stark, straight lines sometimes can show some jaggies even with anti-aliasing settings cranked, particularly in text.

You have to look hard for most of these issues, though, and the fact that I normally play these games on similarly high-powered gaming rigs means I’m probably more prone to noticing them. If you have a lower-powered gaming machine (or no gaming machine) you probably wouldn’t even notice them—the softness doesn’t affect gameplay whatsoever. You’d just be awed at how good everything looks overall.

GeForce Now also takes the administrative hassle out of PC gaming, keeping your games and graphics drivers up to date. Nvidia’s GeForce Experience software is active when you’re gaming, too.

GeForce Now price and bottom line

GeForce Now knocks it out of the park. It’s the first cloud gaming service that feels like playing on a local rig. It can turn crappy laptops into high-end gaming systems. Bravo, Nvidia. This is a stunning technical achievement.

Some interface quirks aside, the biggest questions revolve around the service’s future, and doesn’t affect beta users. GeForce Now for PCs and Macs will remain free for the extent of its beta period. How much it costs when the service opens to everyone is the big question.

Our interview with Brent Coker, creator of Webreep

Of course, most web analytics tools like Google Analytics are great at telling you what customers are doing, but not so great at telling you why they are doing it and what their motivations and feelings are. Thats’s why I’ve always been keen to share the different types of online customer feedback service available.

I was recently alerted to a new tool by Brent Coker which I think adds to tools which help the “Not What, but Why?” question. It’s an interesting tool for me since it’s based on academic research dating back to 2004, yet is a practical real world tool with benchmarking capabilities. The tool is Webreep

Why web customer feedback is gold!

Before we go into the interview, here’s Brent’s views on why Customer feedback is Gold, but like gold, hard to get your hands on.

Brent’s puts it this way: “Without customer feedback it you’re basically guessing what customers want. Customers might complain if they’re really angry, but they are not the people you want to try to make money from.

What you really want is to do is work on pleasing your existing customer base, and identifying those who are experiencing dissatisfaction before they defect to a competitor.

The problem is less than 6% of dissatisfied customers will tell you they are dissatisfied! They only say something if they’re already angry, then it’s too late. But if you ask a dissatisfied customer how their experience with you was, and how you can improve, 95% will tell you. The secret is, you have to ask.

Q2. What makes Webreep different from similar tools?

The two main differences are Webreep Industry Averages and The Webreep Model.

The Webreep Model came about from my PhD thesis which I started in 2004. At that time I was looking for a reliable way to measure and predict satisfaction, loyalty, and likelihood of referral. I believed these three constructs were key to growing a successful business online.

The concept is simple: If you are satisfied (delighted) with your experience, you are likely to return next time (loyalty), and also tell your friends and family (referral).

This means more money and more customers for the business owner. Comparatively, new customer acquisition is very expensive.

It’s far cheaper, and makes more sense, to focus efforts on getting existing customers to spend more and refer others. Back then, no-one had really worked out how to directly influence these constructs online.

The Webreep model was designed to do just that. Webreep tells you exactly what is affecting satisfaction, loyalty, and likelihood of referral, and what you need to do to increase them.

The second main difference is Webreep Industry Averages. I developed an algorithm that allows you to compare key areas of your site that influence satisfaction to all other websites in the same business category. You can see what your industry average is for things like content quality or website attractiveness, and then compare how your website squares up in comparison. Pretty neat;)

How can Webreep improve website results

Being an academic I’m a great believer in market sensing. That is, shaping your offerings to perfectly match your customers’ needs and tastes. Webreep enables website owners to sense and respond to the market by using a set of interrelated constructs called the “Webreep Model”, and an open ended feedback form.

Without market sensing you’re basically guessing what your customers want, which is inefficient and may even backfire and create dissatisfaction. To use an analogy, imagine you really feel like eating a bowl of clam chowder with sour dough rolls for lunch. You walk into a restaurant, and without saying a word they bring out the best clam chowder and sourdough you’ve ever had.

They knew exactly how you liked it, and they knew you liked it before you said anything. They have delighted you to a point of strong satisfaction.

As a result chances are you’ll come back again and again. Better yet, you’ll tell all your friends and relatives to go there. Before you can satisfy your customers to this degree, you have to know exactly what it is that is influencing their satisfaction (or dissatisfaction if your aim is to stop defection to competitors). Webreep tells you exactly what is influencing satisfaction, how strongly, and what you need to do to improve it.

The Webreep model

Q4. Webreep is based on a model developed by you at the University of Melbourne. Can you tell us the basis of the model please?

The Webreep Model was born from my PhD thesis in 2004. The internet was still recovering from the dot-com bubble four years earlier, and everyone was trying to find a way to predict purchase intent.

The Webreep model consists of four main constructs that directly influence satisfaction, referral, and loyalty. Each construct is comprised of seven facets that comprise each construct. The construct categories include: Navigation, Content, Performance, and Trust. Webreep basically aggregates data on each dimension, and does a statistical technique called multiple regression to show you how strongly each facet is affecting satisfaction, loyalty, and referral likelihood. Then all you need to do is tweak the offending categories for improvement. Rinse, repeat, and watch revenues grow.

Common causes of dissatisfaction

5. Are you able to see any common issues reported by survey respondents? What do these show about how companies can “up their game”?

According to the Webreep Industry Averages, ability to locate relevant information quickly appears to be the biggest area causing dissatisfaction on the web right now. This is across the board, not necessarily tied to a specific industry.

This tells us two things. First, being able to locate information quickly has become the number one issue amongst consumers. Second, websites in general are doing a poor job of making relevant information easy to find. When you look at the way we organise search in the offline world, this trend makes more sense.

When we’re in a department store for example, we don’t have to walk room to room looking for what we want, everything is more or less in one large room. We look for the menswear sign, head in that direction, then ask floor staff where the ties are.

In contrast, traditional websites group information in many “rooms” (pages), so unless we have a very good map, or someone to ask on the spot, we get frustrated. Some websites are even trying to copy the offline experience by enabling consumers to pull up bits of relevant information without leaving the page, to sort of emulate the department store experience. Gap for example have been quite sicessful at this. Those websites that have superior access to information tend to have much higher loyalty rates and word of mouth recommendations.

The second interesting trend we have observed is that trust is becoming less of an influence. Trust was traditionally the number one issue consumers had when giving or payment credentials or personal information about themselves, but it seems now it is becoming less of an issue. The reason why consumers are becoming more trusting is that website designs on the whole are improving with the widespread availability and maturity of CMS systems like Drupal and Joomla. Our research also tells us site design has a subconscious effect on trust. Webreep supports our findings here.

The implications for website owners is however not as good as what we would expect. Because consumers are more trusting, they are more willing to try new websites, which means that on the whole online consumers are becoming less loyal. Our data in fact supports this trend towards lower loyalty across the board. In the past consumers tended to stick to websites already known to them in order to eliminate metal anguish from supplying payment and personal information to a new source. Nowadays it seems consumers are venturing out more, and trying new websites.

The antidote of defection to another website is of course satisfaction. The implications for Marketers here is that they need to really focus on the key drivers of satisfaction such as ease of search, content relevancy, and site attractiveness in order to reduce customer defection to competitor websites.
