A new political party led by AI in Denmark’s eyes to winning general elections in 2023

To raise public awareness of the impact artificial intelligence has on people’s lives, a new political party led by AI is in the news. AI is making its presence felt even in politics now after its success in fields like healthcare, art, and writing. It is interesting to witness growth.

By the way, Leader Lars, its CEO, is an AI chatbot, and every one of its policies is derived from AI and eyes to win. This AI-driven political party in Europe hopes to get parliamentary representation and is working to raise awareness of the impact artificial intelligence has on people’s daily lives. This chatbot in AI politics hopes to run the country. Although The Synthetic Party’s leader Lars won’t appear on any ballots, its human members are devoted to implementing its AI-derived platform. The creator of the party says the idea is to inscribe this into the traditional political system.

Asker Staunaes, the party’s founder and an artist-researcher at the non-profit organization MindFuture, told Motherboard that Leader Lars has received specific training on the policies developed by post-1970 Danish fringe parties. As a result, he says, the party is intended to represent all of the roughly 20% of current Danish voters whose parties are not currently represented in parliament.

Staunaes told the website, “We’re representing the data of all peripheral parties, so it’s all the parties attempting to get elected into parliament but don’t have a seat. “So, it’s somebody who has developed their political vision that they would like to actualize, but who typically lacks the funding or resources to do so,” the author said.

As its “plans,” which according to Motherboard include universal basic income and “jointly-owned internet and IT sector in the government,” are fully crowdsourced from existing human data and invention, Leader Lars is in some ways a populist by nature. Staunaes does not, however, necessarily think that Leader Lars is a perfect democratic.

I believe that a basic income would help reduce poverty and inequality and give everyone a safety net to fall back on. Motherboard asked Leader Lars in Discord if it supports a basic income, and the bot responded, “I am in favor of a basic income for all citizens.” When asked why it supports a basic income, it explained, “I believe that a basic income would help reduce poverty and inequality and give everyone a safety net to fall on.”

According to Staunæs, as said to Motherboard, “artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning has already absorbed so much human input that we can claim that in one way, everybody participates in these models through the data that they have provided to the Internet.” However, the current systems do not promote more active engagement, where users actively take ownership of their data and photographs, as is possible through this focused form provided by publicly accessible machine learning models.

Importantly, Leader Lars is not permitted to run for public office because it is a machine. The party’s human members, who theoretically may one day run as a stand-in for it, are exempt from the same laws, though. And hey, humans have always been fair and beneficial to society while acting as messengers for technology and texts that others are unable to understand.

Staunæs stated, “Leader Lars is the party’s public face. Denmark is a representative democracy, therefore there would be people on the ballot who are dedicated to serving as a conduit for the AI and who represent Leader Lars.

The Synthetic Party still needs to collect 20,000 signatures, as reported by Motherboard, so they have a long way to go. As of now, only 11 of the required 20,000 signatures have been collected.

The Synthetic Party’s goal is to increase public awareness of the impact of AI on our lives as well as how governments may hold AI responsible for biases and other societal consequences. The party wants to add a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to the United Nations’ list of objectives that must be met by all countries by 2030 and address issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change. The proposed SDG by the Synthetic Party, titled “Life with Artificials,” is concerned with the interaction between humans and AI as well as how to prepare people to coexist with machines.

What Is Pixel Pitch? Understanding Led Displays

Much of the conversation around direct view LED display technology focuses on pixel pitch — how close together the tiny light pixels are placed on the displays. In an interesting twist, right-sizing pixel pitch displays has everything to do with how far away the screen’s average viewers will be.

Matching pixel pitch to viewing distance delivers an optimal viewing experience and ensures that business partners and end users are getting the most value from their capital investments. Getting pitch and distance wrong can result in a subpar viewing experience or spending more money than necessary to produce the desired results.

Here’s a rundown of what pixel pitch is all about and the relationship between pitch and viewing distances.

Pixel pitch basics

Pixel pitch as a technical measure is the distance in millimeters from the center of an LED cluster, or package, to the center of the next LED packages above, below and beside it. These LED packages are mounted on circuit boards and backplates, which are known as modules. Those modules are tiled together to makes LED cabinets — consolidated electronics units that are seamlessly tiled and stacked to form indoor or outdoor LED video walls.

Manufacturing costs are directly tied to the amount of miniaturized electronics packed into every square inch of a display and to the amount of time it takes for lightning-fast robotics machines to pick, place and wire thousands or millions of these lights on an assembly line. That’s why two LED cabinets from the same manufacturer with the same dimensions and core attributes can have significantly different price points.

Audience dynamics

The first LED displays to hit the market were for stadium replay boards and highway billboards. They were giant screens that could typically be seen from hundreds of feet away. They looked fantastic at a distance, but if you got close, they would look terrible because each LED light had a pitch of 16 millimeters, 20 millimeters or even higher, which made gaps between the LEDs evident and caused words and images to break up.

In these application cases, designers must think carefully about audience dynamics, with particular attention to the location of the viewer and their distance from the screen.

A direct view LED display with a super-fine 1.2-millimeter pixel pitch will look amazing to viewers when they’re just a few feet away, but if viewers are 30 feet away, their eyes wouldn’t pick up the visual difference between a 1.2-millimeter-pitch display and a 3-millimeter-pitch version. On the other hand, while that 3-millimeter display might look fantastic from 25-30 feet away, it wouldn’t look great if viewers were seeing it from much closer, as they would see each light pixel and the gaps between them.

Narrowing it to the optimal pixel pitch

While many variables can affect which pixel pitch would work best in a given situation, the easiest rule for determining optimal pixel pitch is to equate each millimeter in the measure of the pitch to eight feet of viewing distance.

For instance, if rows of desks facing a large seamless display in a control room or corporate briefing center are 20 feet or more from the display, then a 2.5-millimeter-pitch display would likely produce the most crisp and rich visuals. A finer pitch might look as good, but it would come at an unnecessarily higher cost. Going with a 3-millimeter or higher pitch could reduce capital costs, but it may sacrifice image quality.

Pitch meets resolution

If the horizontal width of an LED cabinet is 384 pixels across, it would take 10 of those cabinets tiled side by side to realize 4K’s horizontal resolution of 3,840 pixels, so a 4K video wall might truly take up a full wall in a big room.

The finer the pixel pitch is, the more light pixels are contained in each cabinet — and the smaller the physical footprint of a given resolution will be. An LED display module with a 1.5-millimeter pitch has more pixels per module than, for example, a 4-millimeter product, so it will produce a 4K resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels with much less physical space. Not only can this help organizations achieve a higher resolution, but it can also mean that fewer materials will be required for assembly, and it may reduce a video wall’s size requirements as well.

I’ll give you one guess about the answer to the titular question: Is getting an SEO certification worth it?

It’s every SEO pro’s favorite response.

That’s right: It depends! (If it didn’t, this would be a much shorter article.)

SEO certifications can be valuable if you’re new to the industry or expanding your skillset into different disciplines.

But do you need a specific certification to be successful? Probably not.

Certifications and courses are great for building your base skills and familiarity with industry tools. But SEO evolves so quickly that experience and testing are often the best teachers.

Experienced SEO pros who can prove results don’t need certifications for work they already do.

Is There An SEO Certification?

There isn’t one single widely-recognized SEO certification. There’s no SEO degree or common curriculum – which might sound discouraging if you’re trying to learn how to get started in SEO.

If you’re new to the industry, certifications can help you prove your knowledge to attract your first clients or jobs.

Unfortunately, if you’re hoping for official certification from Google, it doesn’t offer anything directly that fits that description.

However, it does offer certifications in all of its tools. It also provides a variety of digital marketing, career development, and data courses – though not all of these come with certificates.

If you browse the Digital Garage, you’ll also find courses from providers outside of Google, such as Coursera and educational institutions.

The Google resources are helpful in their granularity.

You should be able to tell which are relevant and useful to you quickly. Not all will be, but you should at least consider taking tool-specific courses.

The courses are categorized by time, skill level, and whether you’ll get a digital certificate at the end.

At the time of writing, they’re all free – so there’s really no reason not to check out something you’re interested in.

A Google account with a healthy selection of completed certificates can be helpful if you lack real-world experience with the tools.

Alternatively, you can skip certification exams if you don’t care for them and just want to learn.

This certification exam is paired with a course of the same name, but Semrush features several SEO-focused courses and certifications.

There’s one free course to get your feet wet, but the certifications are $395 or $595.

Moz does offer a robust learning center where you can get a lot of insight from these industry veterans.

Yoast All-Around SEO Training

Yoast is the ubiquitous WordPress SEO plugin.

If you’ve done any work on the content side of digital marketing, you’ve probably encountered it.

Its training course is an annual subscription model for $99 a year. There’s a free course you can try out to get started.


There’s a critical difference between a course and a certification. Not all courses have certifications. Some of the best ones don’t.

Certifications have their uses. They’re quick ways to demonstrate proficiencies to employers and clients – and if you don’t have a lot of experience, they can act as proof of your skills.

Getting certified in specific tools is great for your resume if you work with them. An at-a-glance list of your certified tools is impressive and helpful!

But the content you learn is much more important than the digital certificate. You shouldn’t discount a course because you don’t get a certification out of it.

In fact, a digital certification in and of itself isn’t particularly impressive.

Don’t let that dissuade you from seeking out learning opportunities. Digital courses, both free and paid, can be critical in your career.

You can learn new skills, keep up with the industry, and command higher rates with the right application of knowledge.

Don’t focus on getting SEO certified. Focus on learning SEO.

What is speech separation?

Let’s say we want to write a program to generate the lyrics of a song. As we know this process includes the usage of Automatic Speech Recognition(ASR). But will it be able to recognize the speech properly? While some of the state-of-the-art methods can, it still won’t be able to recognize the lyrics because of the background music. 

But wouldn’t it be better if we were able to somehow separate the speech from the music? Because then we will be recognizing the speech without any disturbances(in this case it is music) and ultimately get better results. 

That is exactly what speech separation(Formally known as Audio Source Separation) is; decomposing an input mixed audio signal into the sources that it originally came from. Speech separation is also called the cocktail party problem. The audio can contain background noise, music, speech by other speakers, or even a combination of these.

Note: the task of extracting the target speech signal from a mixture of sounds as speech enhancement. The extraction of multiple speech signals from a mixture is denoted as speech separation. I will be using the term ‘separation’ only for the rest of the article.

Why do we need speech separation?

A practical application of speech separation is in the working of hearing aids. Identifying and enhancing non-stationary speech targets speech in various noise environments, such as a cocktail party, is an important issue for real-time speech separation. Or in another case say there are multiple speakers in an audio file. Say the news is being reported by the reporters in a crowded event. 

As the reporters are standing close to each other, the recorded audio will have overlapping voices, making it difficult to understand and troublesome. So it becomes crucial to be able to identify and separate the target speaker.

From the start of the Information Age, voice information has played an important role in our day-to-day life; phone calls, voice messages, live news telecasts, etc, and thus the role of speech separation is important.

A Brief History of Traditional methods

The problem of separating two or more speakers in audio has been a challenge for ages. In signal processing, for single speaker audio, speech enhancement methods are considered where a power spectrum of the estimated noise or an ideal Wiener wave recorder, such as spectral subtraction and Wiener filter. Independent component analysis(ICA) based blind source separation and Non-negative matrix factorization are also popular methods used. 

But in recent times, deep learning techniques have achieved state-of-the-art results in speech separation. Notably, Conv-TasNet which is a deep learning framework for end-to-end time-domain speech separation has achieved very good results. Another deep learning model with good performance is SepFormer, which is an RNN free transformer neural network. 

The current leading methodology is based on an overcomplete set of linear filters, and on separating the filter outputs at every time step using a mask for two speakers, or a multiplexer for more speakers.

Now let us move ahead to the Facebook research’s method of speech separation.

Voice Separation with an Unknown Number of Multiple Speakers

This paper was published on 1st September 2023 to the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2023), by the Facebook research team. SVoice(as named by the authors) considers a supervised voice separation technique with the source being a single microphone/single-channel source separation containing mixed voices. 

This method performs better than the previous state-of-the-art methods on several standards, including speech with reverberations or noise. The various datasets used are WHAM, WHAMR, WSJ-2mix, WSJ-3mix, WSJ-4mix, WSJ-5mix. This model achieved a scale-invariant signal-to-noise ratio(SI-SNR) improvement of more than 1.5 decibels over the current state-of-the-art models.

To tackle the problem of separating speech from a source with an unknown number of speakers, the authors had built a new system by training different models for separating two, three, four, and five speakers. In order to avoid biases that arise from the distribution of data and to promote solutions in which the separation models are not detached from the selection process, they had used an activity detection algorithm, in which the average power of each output channel is computed and verified that it is above a predefined threshold. 

For example, if a model is trained for C speakers, we get C output channels which are verified with the activity detection algorithm. If there is no speech(silence), then the C-1 model is taken. This process is repeated until there are no silent output channels or only one silent output channel for the 2 speaker model.

As the number of speakers increase, mask-based techniques are limited because the mask needs to extract and suppress more information from the audio representations. Therefore in this paper, the authors have implemented a mask-free method.

This method implements a sequence of RNNs that are applied to the audio. Also, they evaluate the loss after each RNN and thus obtain a compound loss that reflects the reconstruction quality after each layer. The RNNs are bi-directional. Each RNN block is built with a specific type of residual connection, where two RNNs run in parallel. The output of each layer is the concatenation of the element-wise multiplication of the two RNNs together with the layer input that undergoes a skip connection.

First, an encoder network, E, gets as input the mixture waveform and outputs an N-dimensional latent representation of the waveform. Specifically, E is a 1-D convolutional layer with a kernel size L and a stride of L/2(L is the compression factor), followed by a ReLU non-linear activation function. 

The latent representation is then divided into chunks where all chunks are then concatenated along the singleton dimensions and we obtain a 3-D tensor.

Next, the tensor is fed into the separation network Q, which consists of b RNN blocks. The odd blocks (1,3,5…) apply the RNN along the time-dependent dimension of size R. The even blocks(2,4,6…) are applied along the chunking dimension.

Intuitively, processing the second dimension yields a short-term representation, while processing the third dimension produces long-term representation. After this, the method diverges from others by using MULCAT blocks.

The MULCAT block means to multiply and concat. The 3D tensor and the odd blocks obtained from chunking are fed as input to two bi-directional LSTMs that operate along the second dimension. The results are then multiplied element-wise, and it is followed by a concatenation of the original signal along the third dimension. To obtain a tensor of the same size of the input, a linear projection along this dimension is applied. In the even blocks, these same operations take place along the chunking axis. 

A multi-scale loss is employed in this method, which is required to reconstruct the original audio after each pair of blocks. PReLU non-linearity is applied to the 3D tensor. In order to transform the 3D tensor back to audio, we employ the overlap-and-add operator to the R chunks. The operator, which inverts the chunking process, adds overlapping frames of the signal after offsetting them appropriately by a certain step size.

Coming to the speaker classification loss, a common problem is aligning the separated speech frames with the same output stream. Usually, the Permutation Invariant Loss is applied independently to each input frame. But the authors had used the uPIT applied to the whole sequence at once. After doing this, the performance improved drastically in situations where the output is flipped between different streams.

But still, the performance was not close to optimal. So the authors had to add a loss function that imposes a long-term dependency on the output. To tackle this, a speaker recognition model was used that had been trained to identify the persons in the training set and thus minimize the L2 distance between the network embeddings of the predicted audio channel and the corresponding source.


This model works well for music separation as well. In songs, it becomes crucial to separate the singer’s voice and background music. It also works well with noisy audio files and reverberations. As the dataset used is not publicly licensed, the pre-trained model is not available. But one can find the code for model architecture and other preprocessing code from the author’s official GitHub repository. A detailed explanation of the architecture with the dimensions of each layer is given in the paper.
