It’s that time again, folks! The year 2013 has come to an end, and 2014 is upon us. This year is perhaps going to be one of the most optimistic ones, with several of 2013’s early-stage innovations coming to fruition and being used in a wider sphere. As we look back at all the innovation we’ve experienced, I’m happy to say that we’ve had a tremendous year. It is now time to look forward and see what kinds of new gadgets and gizmos we’ll see in our near future.

1: 64-bit Smartphones!

It’s one thing to have to contend with a small amount of space, fitting hardware into ever-shrinking frames. As phones’ bodies became larger to accommodate 5-inch (and even 6-inch) screens, manufacturers were pressured to come up with ways of making these behemoths lighter and thinner. This pressure is further exacerbated by the ever-increasing need to include more processing power to compete in the market. It seems very likely that we’ll see a proliferation of 64-bit processing in the smartphones coming out in 2014. Companies that rigidly stick to the 32-bit processing model won’t fall behind this year as quickly as some might think. It will still take some time for app developers to create the applications that will make use of the extra bit width in the CPU.

I see this as a major step forward for two reasons:

Phones with 64-bit processors must include 4 GB or more of RAM to work properly, so we’ll certainly see a significant increase in the speed at which even 32-bit apps run. Samsung seems to already be preparing for this move.

2: The Rise Of The Smart Watch

I’ve written an article earlier (this one) in which I was critical of smart watches. I may have been a bit harsh and have given the wrong impression. For this reason I’m thankful that a few days later a colleague of mine at MTE, Bertel King, Jr., wrote an eloquent piece describing what reasons you have for adapting to the trend now. In essence, I still believe that the technology is a bit young, but I also have reasons to believe that it will flourish this year.

And speaking of wearable technology…

3: Intel’s “Quark” x86 Processor

Intel has been a bit quiet in the wake of the mobile era, which is something surprising for such a competitive firm. I was quite happy to see news about a new processor from Intel, designated the “Quark,” which will be available for wearable technology. It will compete directly with ARM’s Cortex-M line, and my money’s on it surprising us with the amount of features it will bring with it. I’m just wondering why Intel took so long to wake up and smell the roses on this market.

4: The Rise Of Personal And Commercial Drones

Perhaps even more exciting than all the things we just discussed is the fact that drones are starting to become popular among hobbyists and companies alike. Although Amazon’s drone program isn’t going to materialize this year, I see a trend developing within the hobbyist community. Commercial drones will definitely be a reality, and we’ll be seeing more of them. Whether or not they’ll be delivering your goods is open to speculation, though. I highly doubt that any drone delivery program will actually be implemented with success this year, but I do think that some ambitious firms out there are already making plans for it.

Now, there are several speculations and forecasts and out of these ones is that there would be three iPhone models of sizes 5.4 inches, 6.1 inches, and 6.7 inches. There are even speculations that Apple might just forego the notch this time. Although, it might be difficult to say if Apple would let go of the notch in 2023 or 2023.

Time-Of-Flight Sensor and Touch ID

The iPhone 2023 is reported to have a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor which will be able to judge distances even better. For an avid photographer, this will be a boon as with a ToF one could perform some magnificent depth-of-field tricks and even capture better bokeh blur effects especially on portrait shots.

Also, the ToF sensor shall be able to capture depths in large areas. This would further enhance the augmented reality capabilities of the phone as well. With iPhone 12, AR apps will perform even better.

With iPhone 12, Apple might bring the Touch ID back and in fact, it is reported to have a design that will have Touch ID on the entire display. How cool is that?

The report claimed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had been targeting Binance, the largest centralized bitcoin exchange, for years. Differing opinions among DOJ investigators were, however, holding up a full-scale arrest and prosecution.

A key point of contention, according to the report, was the weight of the accumulated evidence.

Panic withdrawal or normal activity?

Users of Binance apparently got into a state of fear once the information was released, as a massive withdrawal was observed once the report was released. Data from Nansen showed that over the course of 24 hours, Binance saw a negative net flow of billions of dollars.

Even if this change wasn’t directly related to the news, the timing of the huge outflow contributed to the FUD that prompted the withdrawals. The continual criticism the exchange received due to the audit and Proof-of-Reserve also didn’t help this narrative.

Andrew Thurman, an analyst, tweeted that couple of market makers had made substantial withdrawals during the previous days. Blockchain records revealed that significant amounts have been transferred away from Binance by a number of users over the past week, including major cryptocurrency market makers such as Jump Trading and Wintermute.

In terms of withdrawals from Binance, Jump Trading seems to stand out as a clear frontrunner. Constant activity off-exchange may indicate a dearth of liquidity.

The Stack Overflow team has issued a temporary restriction on responses produced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT question-answering bot due to how frequently it gets things wrong. Stack Overflow stated that it was debating Open AI-generated responses with a bigger team before making a final decision, but that it was acting now because of concern that ChatGPT– a chatbot would be “significantly damaging” to the organization and its users.

The AI has also come under fire for giving false information in biographical sketches and, in the words of one Twitter user who noticed some wrong math produced by ChatGPT, says “showing that incorrect answers conveyed cogently may trick people.”

About ChatGPT:

Open AI, an AI, and research start-up developed ChatGPT. ChatGPT was introduced on November 30, 2023, by the firm. If the name of the company seems familiar, it is because Open AI is also responsible for creating DALLE•2, a popular AI art generator, and Whisper, an automatic speech recognition system.

With the help of ChatGPT, an AI-powered natural language processing tool, you may communicate with a chatbot in a way that is similar to that of a human being while also doing a lot more. The language model can provide information and help you with things like writing emails, articles, and code. Because ChatGPT is still in the research and feedback-collection phase, usage is now available to the public without charge.

How does it work?

ChatGPT is trained using a model called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), using the same methods as InstructGPT, but with slight differences in the data collection setup. Limitations of using ChatGPT chatbot: 

Although ChatGPT appears to be quite remarkable, it still has limitations. These restrictions include the inability to respond to queries that are phrased in a particular way, and that are required rephrased to comprehend the input question. The most significant drawback is the poor quality of the responses it provides, which occasionally sound reasonable but are overly vague or lengthy.

 The approach also makes assumptions about the meaning of confusing queries rather than seeking clarification, which can result in unexpected answers. As a result, ChatGPT-generated answers to questions have already been temporarily banned on the developer question-and-answer website Stack Overflow.

Stack Overflow moderators wrote in a post that “the main issue is that while the answers that ChatGPT produces have a high likelihood of being inaccurate, they often look like they might be decent and the solutions are relatively easy to produce.” Critics claim that these tools are only very good at placing words into an order that makes sense from a statistical point of view, but they cannot understand the content or know whether the statements it makes are valid.

The creation of content may be delivered by you in-house or outsourced to a marketing agency. But regardless of the approach to output, the dovetailing of data, local SEO experts, and leveraging of your unique industry insights is paramount.

From an agency, you should expect them to lead the local SEO content strategy and approach, providing ongoing recommendations using all available and relevant data sets to justify the; priority, focus, purpose, and ongoing impact of content being generated.

You would expect content to be created to leverage the value and metric success of existing content you have on your website.

You would also expect a consistent focus on new opportunities to ideate and implement new content reflecting the new data sets, and changing needs of your core business audience.

As with any comprehensive content strategy led by SEO, you would want to cover a range of user intent, focus on the actual value provided, and look throughout the spectrum of the information seeking and buying cycle.

Whilst this would be skewed towards local SEO, that does not restrict the impact.

Pertinent topic areas important to the business will likely have wider appeal and opportunity to grow site trust, backlinks, and perceived relevancy beyond the local demographic.

Local Authority And Trust Building

Local authority building is a mainstay within local SEO and a necessity for gaining ground within your online niche.

Local brand building with PR and local media publications.

Business entity and relevant local and regional directory sites.

Links and mentions of the brand, company, and key staff in community and business forums.

Supporting local events, and sharing of expertise (and often resource, charity support, etc.).

Content promotion and placement (both local content and topical business products/services content).

Outside of the citation and link aspect of authority building is the deeper expertise, authority, and wider trust signal gains.

This includes in no small part the management, optimization, and ongoing growth of reviews and engagement through Google Business Profiles (for every business location), formerly Google My Business.

This includes (but is not limited to) search and maps optimization, profile completeness, promotion of content, and answering questions from your audience.

The more proactive you are with generating positive reviews as part of your combined business and agency focus (including targeted location-specific reviews), the faster you will see gains in your perceived online authority and local SEO results.

This needs to be through Google Business Profiles, Bing Places, and other established and trusted third-party review sites.

Content And Social Media

You need to look at how you and your agency can enable your website and brand to become truly embedded within the local community.

For some sites and brands, this may be many local communities, spanning a number of geographically dispersed regions, whilst for others, it may be a single location and a number of miles surrounding it.

Either way, the ability to enhance your website community focus through audience-aware content hubs, free community resources, and tools, and ideally local user-generated content, the better.

This will naturally tie into social media interaction, engagement, and promotion, as well as social listening and audience building, by a genuine understanding of their wants, needs, plus pain points.

And more importantly how your people/experts/staff, brand, and products/services can positively impact them.

In Summary

5 Things We Want To See From Google In 2023

From a hardware perspective, Google had a great 2023. The Pixel 7 series wowed us all, with the Pixel 7 Pro being both our Reader’s Choice and Editor’s Choice winner for the best phone of the year. Even the vanilla Pixel 7 came in second place in our internal voting. The Pixel Watch finally landed (even if it wasn’t all we’d hoped for), we learned about a new smart display/tablet hybrid coming in 2023, and Google’s Nest division released some great new products, too.

With all this in mind, what can we hope for from the Big G in 2023? We’ve got a list of five things we want to see, and we also want to know about the hopes you have.

A foldable worthy of the Pixel name

Google hasn’t confirmed anything, but we are 99.999% certain that there will be a Pixel foldable landing in 2023. It might be called the Pixel Fold or the Pixel Notepad, but there is something on the way. Leaked renders show the phone looking pretty sleek — kind of like a mix between the OPPO Find N2 and a Pixel 7 Pro.

The big question hanging over the foldable, however, is whether or not Google is going to get in its own way. Historically, the company has a terrible habit of entering a market with gusto, failing, and then immediately leaving to chase something new (see: Stadia). We really hope Google doesn’t do this with the foldable.

A smaller Pro-level Pixel

Considering how the Pixel 7 Pro swept our awards in 2023, it’s no secret that we love it. However, just because we love it doesn’t mean we don’t wish it was a bit better. For example, we love that Google trimmed down the curved display a bit as compared to 2023, but why not get rid of the curve altogether? Flat displays are what the people want, Google.

Barring those annoying curves, one of the things we most hope to see is Google trim down the overall size of the next Pro-level Pixel (presumably the Pixel 8 Pro). The Pixel 7 Pro (and, incidentally, the Pixel 6 Pro) aren’t gargantuan behemoths or anything, but they are pretty big. Meanwhile, the Pixel 7 is basically the perfect size. Why can’t we get a phone with all the Pixel 7 Pro perks but in a similar size to the Pixel 7’s?

A renewed focus on the smart home

One of the more shocking bits of news we heard in 2023 was how Amazon is scaling back its Alexa team. Apparently, the company feels Alexa isn’t as much of a success as we all tend to think it is. Historically, Amazon has been the smart home ecosystem leader, with Google relegated to second place. Meanwhile, Apple trails way behind in a distant third. With Amazon weakening, this is Google’s golden opportunity. With the right moves, it could become the top dog of the smart home.

Of course, “with the right moves” is the key phrase there. Google is already well-positioned with its Nest division, which creates high-quality products that are genuinely useful. The Google Home app has come a long way, and 2023 will see it becoming even more powerful. But Nest products are also prohibitively expensive for many consumers, and Google tends to be quite late to the party when it comes to new markets. For example, the first-ever wireless camera from Nest dropped in 2023!

The smart home could be Google’s to take if it can polish the rough edges of Nest and Home.

This is why we’re worried Google could squander this new opportunity. The smart home market is growing fast, with market estimates pointing to a nearly $139 billion size by 2026. That growth could be Google’s to take if it can polish the rough edges of Nest and the Google Home ecosystem.

The new smart home standard known as Matter is going to help with this. Google has already rolled out Matter support to a bulk of its Nest-branded products — but that won’t be enough. It needs more products in the Nest family and it needs to figure out a way to make those products cheaper. It’s making the right moves with the Google Home app, but it also needs to stay focused and consistent.

There are still plenty of people out there who haven’t committed to a smart home ecosystem, so Google needs to win them over fast.

A longer-lasting Pixel Watch 2

The Google Pixel Watch was one of the most anticipated products of 2023. While it offers good looks, some innovative features, and great integration with Wear OS, it has terrible battery life and is way too expensive for what it is.

Inevitably, Google will launch a Pixel Watch 2, hopefully in 2023. We can only hope that this follow-up product fixes the biggest problem with the watch, which is the poor battery life. We’re not expecting a week of juice (even if that’s what we should be able to expect), but the Pixel Watch 2 needs to get through a full 24-36 hours at maxed-out settings. If it can’t do that, it will simply never be able to win over folks who don’t see a smartwatch as an essential product in their lives.
