While browsing the Internet, you may have heard the term “quantum computer” at one point or another. It all sounds so sciency! What they bring to the table is very simple: It’s something better than what we currently have or else we wouldn’t be working on bringing about this tech revolution.
But there’s one thing cryptographers have been asking themselves for a while: What use are encryption algorithms like RSA if quantum computers will be able to break them within seconds? Can they even do that? It’s a terrifying question that many people probably would rather not know the answer to.
How Encryption Currently WorksThere are tons of encryption algorithms, each with their own quirky methods for working out how to best protect your data. If we were to spend time talking about how all of them work, we’d probably have to write a couple thousand pages of material.
The gist of it is that our current methods of encryption take your data and pass it through a series of mathematically-programmed “steps” to jumble it up in such a way that you can later “un-jumble” it with the right variables. These variables are known as “keys.”
Modern-day algorithms like RSA, SHA-512 and even elliptic curve cryptography function in much the same manner. They take a convoluted approach to concealing your data in such a way that normal computers would take millennia to break their algorithms.
But what about quantum computers?
Why Quantum Computers Are So ScaryWhen you sit down and log on to Facebook or whatever you use on the Web, you probably take for granted the amount of technology and computing power that’s dedicated to protecting everything you’re doing. It really takes a mind-blowing amount of labor from extraordinarily expensive hardware to even begin to break the barrier that these services place between you and intruders. It’s why we’re not getting our accounts hacked, because someone broke the encryption. That only happens in movies. Most of the reasons why we end up the victims of hackers can be summed up as human stupidity, not the lack of integrity in our strongest encryption.
Quantum computers kind of turn all of this upside down. Because they can process information so quickly and do math like it’s no one’s business, they kind of make encryption a bit useless. In fact, Google has been hard at work on implementing a new type of cryptography in anticipation of eventual quantum computer attacks.
A quantum computer can theoretically solve RSA puzzles and anything using SSL encryption in a matter of seconds. This means that HTTPS is basically useless at this point if someone had a massive quantum rig and fired it up to snoop around on your traffic. They could do this in less time than it takes for you to take a sip of your coffee or pronounce the word “Mississippi.”
What We Can Do About ItThere’s really nothing much you can do yourself to prevent the quantum “apocalypse” except for hoping that the mathematical difficulty of “solving” encryption keeps up the pace before these computers become commonplace items in everyone’s homes. If that doesn’t happen, then you might as well unplug yourself from the Internet. Every database in the world, every WiFi hotspot out there, and even your very own home could all become potential snake pits.
The buck doesn’t stop here. Google is just one of the first companies to announce that it is working on a solution. There are very likely many other folks already working on quantum-computer-proof algorithms that will up the ante in the battle between cryptography and computing power.

Quantum computing’s most practical use until now might have been as a plot point in sci-fi novels, but Microsoft believes the “revolutionary technology” is finally headed to a practical level. At Ignite 2023, the company’s annual tech conference, the company outlined part of its roadmap toward an ecosystem of hardware and software that will bring quantum computing to a wide range of developers.
It’s based on the handiwork of math researcher Michael Freedman, who has been part of the software giant’s theoretical research team “Microsoft Station Q” at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Over time, that has developed into the search for a topological qubit, the quantum bit which any production quantum computer would use as its core.
Microsoft isn’t straying too far from the typical quantum computing hype in terms of what the system it envisages might do. The little-understood technology would open the door to incredibly fast processing, exponentially quicker than current computers. Complex scientific mysteries currently beyond the scope of even the most potent supercomputers could be handled in hours or less.
Perhaps more mundanely, topological quantum computers could also have a sizable impact on the machine learning and AI systems we increasingly interact with on a daily basis. For instance Microsoft’s Craig Mundie, the company’s chief research and strategy officer, suggests Cortana’s algorithms could hypothetically be trained and processed 30 times faster than currently. Such an acceleration could have a significant impact on how quickly artificial intelligence systems scale up to provide useful results and near-intuitive decisions.
For that to be practical, Microsoft points out, quantum computing can’t be the reserve of a few researchers in a lab. Instead, the goal is to make the technology more available for a broader audience. The next step of that is a new programming language that the company has developed, which will run on quantum simulators but eventually be compatible, so the idea goes, with whatever quantum hardware Microsoft one day can produce.
“The same code that you’re running today in simulation you can run tomorrow on our quantum computer,” Krysta Svore, lead developer on Microsoft’s quantum-compatible software team, said of the announcement. Importantly, the new language is integrated into Visual Studio so as to minimize the headaches involved in transitioning from old to new code. “It shouldn’t look too different from the things they’re already doing,” Svore says.
Individual developers will be able to simulate up to 30 logical quits of processing power on their PC, while select Azure enterprise customers will get access to more than 40 quits. The software update will be available later in 2023.
Of course, what’s still unclear is just when Microsoft’s goal of a practical quantum computer could actually pan out. We’re still some ways off any sort of production hardware, after all. According to Freedman, he hasn’t even given much thought to what the technology could do.
“I’ve been asked about the applications of quantum computing – you know, what motivates me? Do I want to cure disease, design new materials, protect the environment?” the mathmatician says. “The truth is, it’s none of that. At this point in the project, the only thing I care about is making the quantum computer work.”

In this article, I am not explaining the detailed process of adding your site. Check out the article on how to add your WordPress site in Cloudflare and below is the summary. You can follow the steps for websites using any content management platform as long as they are accessible online.
Add New Site in Cloudflare
Enter your domain name, select your plan and scan the DNS records.
Change the DNS servers to point your domain to Cloudflare.
If the DNS changes are reflected, you will see a success message. Otherwise, wait few hours and then try again.
Setup Finished
Setup SSL in CloudflareFollow the below steps after adding your site.
Select your site from Cloudflare dashboard section.
You will see multiple options in right side pane and select “Full” option.
Your selection will be automatically saved.
Select Full Encryption in Cloudflare
SSL/TLS encryption needs two secure connections – one is from browser to Cloudflare and the next is from Cloudflare to your hosting server as shown in the above picture. Selecting “Full” is the best option with free SSL certificate installed on your hosting server. Here is a bit more about all the available options and when you can use them:
Off (not secure) – As mentioned, selecting “off (not secure)” will not use SSL and browsers will show your site as “Not Secured” in the address bar.
Flexible – This option is helpful if you are not able to configure HTTPS on your hosting server. In this case, the traffic from browser to Cloudflare will use HTTPS and any traffic to origin server will use HTTP.
Full – Selecting “Full” is the best option with free SSL certificate installed on your hosting server. Here, Cloudflare will use HTTPS for connecting to your server using the self-signed SSL issued from Let’s Encrypt without any verification.
Full (Strict) – This offers maximum security over end-to-end encryption as Cloudflare will verify the certificate installed on your hosting server. Choose this option only when you have a trusted certificate installed on your server.
Checking SSL Certificate StatusAfter enabling “Full” option, your site will NOT immediately use SSL. Follow the below steps to check the SSL status in Cloudflare:
If the status shows “Authorizing Certificate”, then you need to wait till it becomes “Active”.
Cloudflare needs up to 24 hours to authorize SSL certificate for free users. If you are using Pro or other premium plan, it will just take 15 minutes for the authorization.

Force HTTPS in CloudflareOnce SSL is authorized, the next step is to force the connection to use HTTPS.

Turn on the switch to force HTTPS for all your traffic.
Cloud Computing: Amazon’s Cloudy Future
Amazon had to prepare for peak traffic, but how could they monetize that excess capacity during non-peak times? With the rise of cloud computing, they found their answer, and Amazon Web Serviceswas born.
“It’s pretty close to an accidental empire,” said Dana Gardner, president and principal analyst of research firm Interarbor Solutions.
“The excess capacity point is a common misperception and not at all why we started Amazon Web Services,” said Kay Kinton, PR manager, Amazon Web Services.

Regardless of the creation story, the fact is that Amazon’s business strategy since getting into cloud computing is anything but accidental.
In this era of “Webification,” where everything that can move to the Web does – and preferably as a service – being a cloud provider means many different things to many different people.
What it means to Amazon is, first and foremost, on-demand capacity. Be it server, storage or database capacity, Amazon will give it to you in a cost-effective and flexible manner.
What Amazon does not do is deliver applications. Amazon’s cloud offering is perfect for developers, less so for everyone else.
Is that, however, a bad thing?
“I don’t see their approach as a drawback,” Gardner said. “Compare what Amazon does to SaaS. SaaS is model of delivering applications. As Amazon sees it, cloud computing is about delivering capacity.”
To emphasize his point, Gardner compared Amazon to the early days of Microsoft. It may be difficult to remember, but at first Microsoft delivered an operating system and not applications. Lotus Notes, WordPerfect and others pioneered the application space. Only later, after Windows had a firm hold on the operating system market, did Microsoft start to divide and conquer everything else.
“The lesson is that you don’t want to compete with your customers, at least not at first,” Gardner said. “Why make a little bit of money on applications when what the market really wants today is cheap capacity?”
“Amazon needs to decide whether cloud computing is a hobby or a business,” said Nik Simpson, an analyst with the Burton Group.
“At the moment their entire infrastructure is hosted, I think, in two data centers, one of which is much larger than the other. If one data center goes down, do they have the capacity to handle everything in the other?”
As Simpson sees it, while Amazon has a ton of capacity, they may be missing the boat on some of the things that the enterprise demands, such as high availability and failover. For SMBs and developers testing projects, the low cost makes this a reasonable tradeoff. Yet for enterprise customers curious about the cost savings associated with Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Simple Storage Service(S3), the risk may trump the low cost.
Amazon, predictably, believes it is already enterprise ready. Amazon argues that they offer failover capability, noting (in Amazon-speak) that they “currently expose 6 different ‘Availability Zones’ to customers in two different regions.”
