Suggested March 2024 ‘World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm’ Sells 4.7M In First Month

Activision Blizzard today announced that “World of Warcraft: Cataclysm” sold 4.7 million copies in December, its first month. “We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for ‘World of Warcraft: Cataclysm,’ making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, in a statement. Launched globally on December 7, 2010, the game’s first-month sales didn’t appear to sustain the momentum of its first 24 hours, when it sold 3.3 million units and earned the title of fastest-selling PC game of all time. Activision did not mention subscriber figures. In October, before “Cataclysm” was released, the company said its World of Warcraft subscriber base had grown to 12 million users, up from 11 million in October 2008. Still that didn’t stop Activision from pointing to opportunities on its job board as it expands “to keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games,” the company said. Last month, Activision’s other star product, “Call of Duty: Black Ops” hit $1 billion in sales after almost two months on the market. It reportedly sold 8.4 million units in its first month alone.
