Suggested March 2024 Wsj Joins Apple’s News Subscription Service, Nyt & Other Major Publishers Reportedly Opt Out

Next Monday, Apple is expected to unveil a subscription service in the News app based on its purchase of the all-you-can-eat $10 per month magazine subscription service Texture. While The Wall Street Journal has been confirmed as one of the launch partners for the service, The New York Times and The Washington Post have reportedly passed on it due to Apple’s terms.

Mike Isaac, writing for The New York Times:

The Wall Street Journal plans to join a new paid subscription news service run by Apple, according to two people familiar with the plans, as other publishers chafe at the terms that the Silicon Valley company is demanding of its partners.

Other major publishers, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, have opted out of joining the subscription service. Apple and The Wall Street Journal plan to announce the deal Monday at a media event at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino.

Apple appears to be following its playbook: get at least one major content provider on board and others will gravitate toward joining the service sooner than later.

So….WSJ digital sub costs $396/year. Apple News Sub is $120/year. If all of WSJ contnet is there in the app, why would any WSJ subscriber not save $276/year and ditch their direct sub for an Apple News sub? You could literally use the savings to buy a used iPad to read it on.

That has served the Mac maker incredibly well in the past when its services chief Eddy Cue was negotiating terms of business with record labels because the music industry needed Apple to save it from piracy.

However, publishers don’t depend on Apple to expand their reach:

Publishers have also been seeking to expand beyond their core subscriber bases, finding new audiences across nontraditional platforms and striking deals with tech companies. Apple has teamed up with news organizations on its Apple News product for years, offering select content to consumers for free.

But publishers have had mixed experience partnering with Facebook on news:

Publishers have grown wary of some partnerships in recent years, as past relationships with companies like Facebook, Medium and others have soured. In the past, Facebook has inked deals with publishers to fund or support new initiatives, only to quickly change plans and yank support from one year to the next.

The thing is, publishers don’t need saving from Apple. Despite falling ad sales in print, digital subscriptions have been on the rise and The New York Times is a prime example of that.

A splash screen for “Apple News Magazines” in iOS 12.2’s News app

Apple is said to charge customers ten bucks per month for an all-you-can-eat access to digital newspapers and popular magazines. Subscription revenue would then get distributed among the participating publishers who would individually earn a tiny fraction of each subscription.

To persuade publishers to join the paid service, Apple executives have said the scale of Apple News, which is installed on every iPhone sold to consumers, could introduce millions of new customers to their content.

But the most recent terms that Apple is offering to publishers ask for a cut of roughly half of the subscription revenue involved in the service, the people said. Apple has also asked publishers to give unlimited access to all their content, which has caused concern among potential partners, they said. A subscription is expected to cost $10 a month.

Another sticking point for publishers: they would not receive customer data from Apple, such as names, email addresses and addresses, which could be used to construct databases that could in turn be leveraged to sell other publisher products to readers.

The terms have caused some publishers to recoil, as a 50 percent cut is higher than the 30 percent Apple usually takes from apps and subscriptions sold through App Store.

Publishers are also concerned that they won’t have access to important data about the consumers—credit cards, email addresses and other subscriber information.

Best Gaming Subscription Services For Pc

PC gaming is not known for subscription services because most gamers have been spoiled by Steam for decades. All the key features on Steam are free to use, but that doesn’t mean competing platforms aren’t able to woo gamers with features via subscriptions. Currently, there are several gaming subscription services for PC that are, in our eyes, quite good. All you have to do is pay a monthly or yearly cost, and you can go ahead and enjoy all they have to offer.

Best PC Gaming subscription services

The list below consists of the best gaming subscription services for PC gamers:

Xbox Game Pass for PC

Humble Choice

EA Play

Prime Gaming

Ubisoft+

Utomik

Google Stadia Pro

1] Xbox Game Pass for PC

By now, we suspect most folks have heard about Xbox Game Pass. It was first brought to the forefront via the Xbox One video game console, then after that, Microsoft decided to bring the service to PC.

With this service, gamers have the ability to play all Microsoft-published titles on the day of release at no extra charge. You will also gain access to titles from other publishers, but these will not be available forever. It also comes packed with EA Play support, so all the titles available on that service can be played without issues.

Xbox Game Pass begins at $9.99 for the basic option. If you want EA Play, Ubisoft+, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, then prepare to shell out $14.99 per month for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. From our point of view, the fee is worth it, so if you’re in good financial standing, then subscribe.

2] Humble Choice

Not many PC gamers have heard about Humble Choice, a really good gaming subscription service from our point of view. You see, other services will remove games at some point, and you won’t be able to play them again unless the title is purchased outright.

This is not the case with Humble Choice at all. Once you are subscribed to the service, you can proceed to download the games you wish to play. The great thing here is that any game downloaded to your system is yours forever.

Now, the catch is, that you cannot choose individual games. Humble Choice provides eight games every month from both mainstream and indie developers.

3] EA Play

One of the biggest video game publishers is no other than Electronic Arts or EA for short. This company has published several major titles over a lifetime spanning decades, so when an EA-based subscription service is released in the form of EA Play, one has to take notice.

The cost of the service begins at $4.99 every month and can go up to as much as $14.99 for EA Play Pro. Now, bear in mind that with EA Play, you will only have access to games published by EA.

4] Prime Gaming

Amazon is getting its hands involved in everything these days, so the arrival of Prime Gaming should surprise no one. If you’re already an Amazon Prime subscriber, then understand that Prime Gaming has already been included as part of the overall package.

So, what does Prime Gaming offer? Well, players can get loot each month from selected developers. Not only that, but Amazon brings to the table a rotating list of free games every month as well. Furthermore, gamers will have access to Amazon’s cloud gaming service, Luna.

5] Ubisoft+

If you’re a huge fan of Ubisoft games, then this is the subscription service for you. You’ll gain access to all available titles from this popular publisher. Games such as Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, The Division, and more, are ready to be downloaded and to be played.

The price for Ubisoft+ begins at $14.99 per month. However, if you want support for Luna and Stadia, then prepare to spend a whopping $17.99 each month.

6] Utomik

If we look back into history, then it would become apparent that Utomik is one of the first gaming-related subscription services to come on the scene. It first came to market back in 2014, and since then, the company has garnered a decent following.

Yes, we are aware that Utomik is not as large as Xbox Game Pass in terms of subscribers, but at the time of writing, it has over 1,385 games with more added each week.

7] Google Stadia Pro

Finally, we want to take a look at what Google has to offer in the sphere of gaming. You see, the search giant is not new to gaming due to the popularity of the Google Play Store on Android. With that in mind, the company launched Google Stadia, though things did not go according to plan at first.

These days, Stadia is doing OK for itself, and we expect it to compete directly with Microsoft and Sony in the years to come.

Now, outside of regular Stadia, there is a subscription service known as Stadia Pro where gamers can play a list of titles from the crowd throughout the duration of the subscription. This can be done via a computer, smartphone, tablet, or over Chromecast Ultra device.

The cost is an affordable $9.99 each month, so not as expensive when compared to some on this list.

What is the biggest streaming platform for gaming?

At the moment, there are several streaming platforms for PC gaming, but only Twitch reigns supreme. Yes, it is possible to use YouTube as an alternative, but it pales in comparison to what Twitch can bring to the table in terms of viewers and features.

How To Cancel Canva Subscription (4 Quick Steps)

While having a Canva subscription can be beneficial to your graphic design needs, there are ways to cancel your subscription if you no longer need the premium version of the service. Canva Pro features will remain in effect until the end of your billing period.

My name is Kerry, and I’ve been involved in digital design and art for many years. I’ve used Canva for quite some time now and am very familiar with the program, what you can do with it, and tips to use it even easier.

In this post, I’ll explain how to cancel your Canva Pro subscription and explain some of the logistics of navigating this process. I’ll also discuss points regarding different devices to ensure that you can cancel your subscription effectively.

Let’s get into it!

How to Cancel Canva Subscription

Regardless of the reason why you want to cancel your Canva subscription, the process of doing so is simple. When you cancel, your account will remain active until the end of the subscription period.

It is also important to note that you will need to navigate this process using whatever device you initially signed up for Canva Pro on.

For example, if you started using Canva Pro on a traditional browser, the steps for canceling the subscription are different that doing so on an iPhone. No worries though. I will dive into canceling subscriptions through each of these options in this article!

Canceling Canva Pro on a Web Browser

Step 3: Once you are in that window, find the Billings & plans section on the left side of your screen. Your subscription should pop up in that tab.

Canceling Canva Pro on an Android Device

Canceling Canva Pro on Apple Devices

If you used an Apple device such as an iPad or iPhone to purchase a Canva Pro subscription, you can follow these steps to cancel.

On your device, open the Settings app and select your account (Apple ID).

Pausing Your Canva Subscription

If you want to take a break from using Canva Pro but don’t want to commit to canceling the entire plan, there is an option to pause! Canva allows a pause of your subscription for up to three months.

However, this possibility is only available to users on the monthly payment option or for those who have the yearly plan and are towards the end of their cycle (with less than two months left).

How to Pause Your Subscription

Set a reminder for the end of this pause because Canva will automatically resume your Pro account after the selected amount of time. You’ll receive an email to remind you about this, but it’s better to be proactive than forget ad start getting charged again!

Will I Lose My Designs If I Cancel My Subscription?

When you cancel your Pro subscription to Canva, you do not automatically lose all the designs that you spent time creating. This is great for those who have regretted canceling or need a break for longer than the allocation for a three-month pause.

In Canva Pro there is a feature called Brand Kit, which holds onto your uploaded fonts, color palettes, and design folders with projects. If you decide to restart your subscription, those elements will be reinstated, and you won’t have to create them again!

Trouble Canceling Subscription

There are a few common reasons why people have trouble canceling their Canva subscriptions, so if you are having difficulty, make sure to read on to see if you fall into one of these categories.

Attempting to Cancel Through Incorrect Device

As stated before, you are only able to cancel a Canva subscription through the initial platform on that you purchased it. This means that if you are trying to cancel on an iPhone but initially purchased Canva Pro on the web browser, you will not be able to make these changes.

To rectify this problem, make sure to cancel using the correct device and follow the proper steps for cancellation on the correct device.

Payment Issues

If your previous bills for a Canva subscription have not been paid, you will not be able to make any changes to your plan until all payments are up to date! Make sure that the card that you have on file is accurate so that you can cancel in a timely manner and not be charged for extra months.

You’re Not the Administrator

If you are using Canva Pro features through a Canva for Teams account, you will not be able to cancel a subscription unless you are the owner or administrator of that team. This is to ensure that entire teams don’t have access to managing plans. Contact the head of your group to discuss this issue.

Final Thoughts

If you are ready to cancel your Canva subscription, there are options that will allow you to take a break from the premium services based on your needs. Just make sure to follow the correct steps to do so properly!

Design Tzar Jony Ive Talks Apple Park In Wsj Interview

Jony Ive, 50, Apple’s Chief Design Officer in charge of all design efforts across the company, sat down with The Wall Street Journal’s Christina Passariello to discuss the company’s massive new campus, called Apple Park, and other topics of interest.

While Ive and his design team won’t be moving to their new offices (on the fourth floor, where the executive suites are) before this fall, a section of workspace is move-in-ready.

That section includes massive sliding glass doors (with underground motors for silent operation) on the soundproof offices, a giant European white oak collaboration table, adjustable-height desks and floors with aluminum-covered hinged panels hiding cables and wires, plus brushed-steel grating for air diffusion.

Hallways around the perimeter of the main building are set up to encourage casual meetings.

Designed in collaboration with architect Norman Foster, Apple Park will run 100 percent on renewable energy. It’s the biggest corporate office building in the world.

Apple’s stellar growth in the past decade has posed challenge to its internal culture and collaboration, necessitating the need for a new kind of office space.

According to CEO Tim Cook:

We didn’t plan our growth, and then when we saw our growth, we were so engrossed in trying to push things forward that we didn’t spend time to really develop the workplace. We’ve done a really good job of working around it, but it’s not the way we want to be working, nor does it represent our culture well.

For all of the beauty of technology and all the things we’ve helped facilitate over the years, nothing yet replaces human interaction, and I don’t think it will ever happen.”

The idea for the campus was born during a walk in London’s Hyde Park in 2004 when the first iPhone was in the works, with Jobs “fantasizing” with Ive about building a campus centered around a quad, with plenty of parkland for meandering and meeting.

The new headquarters are being built at a reported cost of $5 billion.

The four-story building encourages employees to walk to visit colleagues and attend meetings rather than use elevators, Ive said. He also shot down a recent article claiming Apple contributed to a tree shortage in the Bay Area by buying up so many plants for the campus, “as if we’d got to the end of our project and we thought, Oh, we’d better plant some trees.”

Apple began working with an arborist years ago to source 9,000+ trees for Apple Park, many of them drought-resistant, that will have been planted by the time the campus is finished.

Desks in the open-plan workspaces can be raised to standing level at the push of a button.

Ive and his team approached designing Apple Park like they would any other Apple product.

“A lot of the buildings that are being built at the moment are products of software-only cultures,” said Ive. “Because we understand making, we’ll build a prototype and try it and use it, and see what works and what doesn’t.”

Other highlights from the interview:

Custom furniture was designed by Naoto Fukasawa.

The circular glass canopies, shown on the image at the top of the post, reflect more of the surrounding greenery than Ive had anticipated.

The chairs in the hallways are by Poul Kjærholm.

At the height of activity in February, 6,200 construction workers were on-site daily.

While Apple Park was in development, Ive hired Foster to help implement his designs for a a red brick mansion he bought in 2012 in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood.

iPhones will be the primary mode of communication for everyone, though employees can also lobby for a desk phone.

Whiteboards are built into floor-to-ceiling sliding doors in the central area of each pod.

The Steve Jobs Theater will host product launches, seminar talks, small concerts and corporate meetings.

Meetings with Cook or Ive will be simulcast to every pod on campus.

There will be 2,000 custom bikes made by Public Bikes and painted “Apple gray”.

The entire campus will be mapped on Apple Maps.

Ive told director J.J. Abrams that he had the look of the original Stormtroopers in mind when he designed AirPods.

Fun fact: Ive’s suits are custom-made by a tailor in the north of England, Thomas Mahon, but he rarely dresses up.

Apple Park has turned into one of his longest projects as Apple’s chief designer.

There’s the same rather strange process you go through when you finish a product and you prepare to release it—it’s the same set of feelings.

That feels, I don’t know, encouragingly healthy, because I would be concerned if we lost that sense of anxiety. I think that would suggest that we were not as self-critical, not as curious, not as inquisitive as we have to be to be able to be effective and do good work.

The driving force behind the new headquarters, Ive “was the one who carried it forward with the same intent” after Steve Jobs died, according to Steve’s widow Laurene Powell Jobs.

“The materiality of it is inspiring,” she said of the ring-shaped building. “The quality of the wood, the quality of the stone, the quality of the light—that’s what makes it so beautiful.”

News Roundup 8Th March 2023

Millions are 5G-ready, Facebook disagrees with ACCC recommendations, YouTube will never be “100% safe” for brands, Facebook to improve messaging privacy and new interracial couple emojis announced

This week’s news roundup sees concerns raised about privacy when 5G is rolled out, with the Information Commissioner’s Office raising concerns about personal data on a faster network.

Facebook has also responded to the ACCC’s initial recommendations, disagreeing with the suggested extra regulations.

Mark Zuckerberg has announced controversial changes to messanger apps, with auto-encryption set to be rolled out.

Finally, it has been announced that interracial couple emojis will be available this year following a petition by Tinder.

Find out more about each of these stories below.

Millions ready for 5G but is privacy an issue?

Up to 15 million UK smartphone users are willing to switch over to the 5G network, according to research from Deloitte. While this eagerness to adopt the technology is yet to translate into sales, the fact that many people are ready and willing to switch to 5G means brands need to be totally mobile-ready.

With 5G comes much faster browsing times, which could affect consumers’ already dwindling patience. With only 13% of users being happy with the quality of their 4G networks, slow load speeds are sure to be an issue once more people adopt 5g.

However, the rate of adoption for 5G is likely to be slower than it was for 4G, giving brands time to get their mobile offerings right and ready. The fact that 5G mobile data networks could also pose more threats to personal data may also put people off adopting this year.

According to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the new faster network could mean threats to privacy and personal data are taken to a new level.

The ICO’s executive director for technology policy and innovation, Simon McDougall, has said that the fact that there is potential for large amounts of data to be transferred via constantly connected, high-speed networks could cause challenges. The fact that the networks can also communicate with personal devices also means that 5G could pave the way for intrusive practices.

“The kind of possibilities we currently only have via the Internet of Things in some people’s homes are going to be possible out there on the street all the time,” Mr McDougall told the DMA’s Data Protection 2023 conference on March 1st.

He highlighted the fact that marketers will need to ensure they use the applications of 5G in a respectful way that doesn’t cross the line. This means maintaining usefulness rather than just pushing products and services, as well as ensuring customers’ privacy is always protected.

Facebook rejects ACCC’s key recommendations

Facebook has called out the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) over its recent key recommendations. The social media platform has said that the organization is only looking to protect the interests of a handful of small media companies and not journalism as a whole.

Facebook said: “The preliminary report’s near-exclusive focus on protecting certain publishers from disruption and competition is at odds with the ACCC’s mandate to promote competition and protect consumers, and misapprehends the broader challenges facing journalism and news production.”

News ranking regulator

One of the recommendations Facebook didn’t agree with was for a news ranking regulator. The ACCC suggests that a regulator is put in place to monitor and report on the news that appears in news feeds on social media.

As Facebook classes its self as a platform rather than a publisher, it says that the government and the ACCC shouldn’t be able to “appoint itself as a monitor, investigator and reporter of the daily process by which The Sydney Morning Herald predicts reader interests and chooses news articles that will appear on its front page.”

Ad regulator

YouTube will “never be totally brand-safe,” says Google

According to Nishma Robb, complete brand safety is not “the reality of the platform”. Speaking at the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers’ annual conference, she said: “The reality is, the internet has dark pockets and our job is to continue to work hard to ensure we have the machines and processes to remove harmful content.”

She also highlighted the fact that YouTube’s artificial intelligence safeguards now catch around 98% of “extremist or violent” videos upon upload, which shows improvement, as its previous AI safeguards caught just 75% of these videos.

Facebook looking to improve privacy

Mark Zuckerberg has announced in a blog post that Facebook is set to improve privacy, with auto-encryption being introduced for all messaging services. Aimed at protecting data, the change will be put in place on messaging services across all its platforms, including Messenger and Instagram.

As well as encryption, the blog post said that Facebook would start to delete older messages rather than storing them indefinitely as they do now. It also will not store data in countries that have a history of abusing human rights.

Mr Zuckerberg said: “I understand that many people don’t think Facebook can or would even want to build this kind of privacy-focused platform – because frankly we don’t currently have a strong reputation for building privacy protective services, and we’ve historically focused on tools for more open sharing.

“But we’ve repeatedly shown that we can evolve to build the services that people really want, including in private messaging and stories.”

While he has not given any timeline on when these changes would be made, Mr Zuckerberg said that they would be implemented within the next few years.

Interracial emojis launched

Following a petition launched by dating app Tinder, new emojis depicting interracial couples have been accepted. The Unicode Consortium, which creates emojis and reviews applications, will be releasing a number of new emojis that represent heterosexual and same-sex couples featuring a mix of skin colours.

After over 52,000 people signed Tinder’s petition, the Consortium announced that 71 new couple variations will be made available as emojis, to helping to represent more users.

In its petition, Tinder wrote: “While emojis for people of colour and emojis for same-sex couples both became a reality in 2024, one group of people is still excluded from emoji representation: interracial couples. Isn’t it time all love was represented?”

On the company blog, the dating app said: “This isn’t just about emojis, folks. Interracial couples have struggled throughout history for acceptance and representation, and these emojis are literally and figuratively important symbols.”

The new couple emojis will be released as part of Unicode 12.0, which will be available in autumn.
